Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 116

~ HOW ABOUT YOU TREAT ME TO HAVE A CUP OF TEA? ~

Not only did Wei Yi, Yun Chun, and the others tense up, but even Steward Qin felt sweat on his forehead. Initially, he thought it was flawless, but now it might be full of flaws. Something might have been wrong if it had not been for Mu Yunyao’s advice.

“Don’t worry, Miss. This old servant will always warn them at all times.”

Mu Yunyao nodded his head. “You don’t have to be so anxious. All of this is just a precaution. If my plan works out with that gold signboard, no one will dare to look for trouble casually. As long as you remember your current identity, there shouldn’t be any big mistakes. However, if there are any flaws, you must inform Steward Qin and me as soon as possible. Bu Xian Luo certainly will not be just in Jingling City. We can arrange for you to go to other places. Do not hide anything from us so as not to cause any more trouble.”

“Yes, Young Miss. We will follow your teachings!”

“Steward Qin, clean up the garden. The teahouse will open on time tomorrow, and we will set the price of the tea as we agreed before.”

“Yes, Young Miss.”

The people of Jingling City were angry because of the burning of Ni Yun Fang. So, the news about Mu Yunyao opening a teahouse spread like fire throughout the city.

Everyone curiously came to Jin Xiu Garden’s surroundings, and through the entrance, they secretly observed the scenery in the garden. Unfortunately, they could only see a lush green Xiang Fei Bamboo clump.

Once the news of Governor Zhang, Cao Yunnian, the Governor’s wife, and Lady Jin having tea at the teahouse spread, many people became even more curious about Jin Xiu Garden. All decided to go in and look once the teahouse officially opened.

On the second day, Jin Xiu Garden opened the door but stopped everyone from entering.

“Why is that? Are they still not opening today?” A man dressed as a scholar had a face full of doubt.

“Young Master, please forgive me. Because Bu Xian Luo has a limited workforce, we can’t entertain so many people. We can only entertain the guests who have received Bu Xian Luo’s invitation to enter.” Steward Qin explained with an apologetic expression.

As he was speaking, a person holding an invitation arrived. Wei Yi hurriedly pointed at the people to welcome the guests.

Fifty people in white robes stood at the entrance when the man entered the garden. He saw them bowing in unison. The men were as gentle, like jade, while the women were beautiful and charming. Just that one move was enough to make people feel that their identities were different from the others. It was different, and they could not help but feel pounding.

Someone at the door was already in a daze and pointed at Wei Yi, Yun Chun, and the rest as he asked Steward Qin.”Shopkeeper Qin, may I ask who these people are…?”

The other identity of Steward Qin was that of the shopkeeper of Bu Xian Luo. Upon hearing this, Steward Qin hurriedly replied: “They are all Bu Xian Luo’s Si Cha and specifically responsible for brewing tea for the distinguished guests. Because there are only fifty of them, they can only serve fifty tables of guests in the early stages. Their workforce is limited, and if the distinguished guests want to come in to taste the tea, they must wait for someone to leave to take their place. Furthermore, every Si Cha entertains only eight tables of guests every day. It is to ensure that they will do their best to brew every pot of tea and won’t disappoint the expectations of the esteemed guests.”

The people who watched the lively outside were stunned. There were also other teahouses in Jingling City, but no matter how particular they were, they would at most pay extra attention to water and heat when making tea. This Bu Xian Lou found fifty people, one for each table, to make tea. It was something very unique.

Everyone even became more anxious and wanted to go inside and experience what it was like to be treated specially.

Another person brought this invitation over and immediately met with an acquaintance. “Brother Ma, do you remember that we were having dinner together two days ago? It is truly a waste for you if only one person enters with the invitation. How about you allow me to accompany you, Brother? Didn’t you say you liked the Spring Festival Gala in my room last time? I’ll roll it up and send it to Brother Ma later.”

“Lord Wang, we’ve done business before, do you remember? How about we go in for a cup of tea today?”

For a time, Jin Xiu Garden’s entrance was exceptionally lively.

Each of the invitations could be used to invite another five people. Other than the first few who needed to be more, the rest required six people to enter Jin Xiu Garden together.

When they arrived at the garden and saw the scenery inside, everyone couldn’t help but exclaim in surprise.

Miss Mu was truly gifted to create a teahouse in such a luxurious place. More importantly, the scenery in Jin Xiu Garden was just too beautiful.

A small river snaked in, the sound of flowing water, clear to the bottom, emerges from the center of the garden into a lake, Jiuqu Bridges to communicate with things, a lake crowded with lotus leaves, fields, and a tree. Looking on both sides east of Xiao Xiang Bamboo Garden were the winter plums, the snow, the flowers, the plum orchids bamboo, chrysanthemums in one color, and the sweet smell of the empty alley. On the west side was Chunhe Jingming with a clear sense, and the scenery like spring, summer, autumn, and winter, all of them are magnificent. Apart from the eight main buildings, the other areas were constructed according to the water potential. Each pavilion has its own characteristics and patchwork. Each place has a place for drinking tea.

Every building had a table, a tree stump, and a bench. It had perfectly blended in with the scenery everywhere and didn’t seem out of place. As the guests sat within it, they only felt their mind at peace, and all their worries vanished.

Si Cha’s skills in brewing tea were even more marvelous. With such an exquisite tea brewing method, they couldn’t wait to accurately measure the tea’s quality. Drinking it made them feel relaxed and comfortable.

Many people outside Jin Xiu Garden waited for those who were invited to finish so they could look at the garden’s scenery. Unexpectedly, after waiting for more than two hours, there was someone reluctantly to walk out.

“Young Master, how is the scenery and tea ceremony?”

The guest who came out shook his head with a profound look.

“Neither of them are good?”

“Not really, not really. It’s too good, so it’s hard to put into words. If you have forced me to say it, I could only say it’s wonderful!”

“Is it really that good?”

That guest’s entire body filled with pride, and he had an expression that seemed like he had just awoken from a drunken stupor. “You people have never personally savored it, so you wouldn’t understand the wonderful things I have described. Miss Mu is truly an amazing woman! It’s a pity that I didn’t have the luck to enter Bu Xian Luo and couldn’t taste the tea that Miss Mu brewed personally.”

Sigh! “What a pity!”

“Isn’t this teahouse called Bu Xian Luo? How can it be opened, but there is no place to let people enter?“

“What you said is out of the way. Do you know why this teahouse called with this name?”

“What do you mean?”

“Bu Xian Luo based on: I do not envy piles of gold, I do not envy vessels of jade, I do not envy the Court or Office. I envy ten thousand folds of the Xijiang River that flows past Jingling. Only those who truly understand and love tea can enter Bu Xian Luo. Otherwise, no matter your status or money, it would be difficult for you to enter the Sixth Floor of Bu Xian Luo.”

“I do not envy piles of gold. I do not envy JJade. What? What do you say to that again, Brother?”

“You don’t even know this poem? It’s really uncomfortable to make me associate with you. Hmph, let’s go.”

This conversation was heard by the people around them. Not long after, it spread throughout the entire Jingling City, causing more and more people to want to go to Bu Xian Luo to drink some tea, but it only distributed fifty invitations daily. So many people had their eyes set on Jin Xiu Garden. When they saw that Si Cha was coming to deliver the invitation, they would follow behind them and find the person who accepted the invitation, using all means possible to get a spot.

At that moment, the most common phrase of the Jingling City was: How about you treat me to a cup of tea?

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 115

~ LAST INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE OPENING ~

After seeing Su Qingwu and Xu Li off, Mu Yunyao finally loosened all the way through, her smile bright and effortless.

Steward Qin had Yun Chun prepare tea and personally brought a cup to Mu Yunyao’s side. “Miss… did what you planned come through?”

“Eight or nine out of ten.”

Steward Qin’s heart leapt with joy. “Wonderful. That makes everything so much easier.”

“Don’t celebrate too early. We’ll wait—within a few days, we should have definite news.” Mu Yunyao tapped the rim of her cup lightly. “For now, have everyone tidy up Jin Xiu Yuan. We still need to host Madam Jin and the others later.”

“Some of the madams have cold constitutions, so prepare more flower infusions and fruit teas. Governor’s Wife will likely come too—she can’t handle sweets, so make sure there are savory pastries. When serving, be extra careful. Don’t mix anything up.”

“Yes. I’ll have them prepare it at once.”

When Steward Qin left, Mu Yunyao removed the sachet hanging at her waist and handed it to Jin Lan, who was waiting nearby.

“Find a brazier and burn it. Leave no trace.”

“Yes, Miss.”

Jin Lan didn’t ask what had been inside. She took the sachet and went.

Mu Yunyao exhaled, then rubbed her brow gently, the curve of her lips rising despite herself.

Even if she was likable, it was impossible to win Xu Li’s special regard in only two days through charm alone. The tea was good, the water was good… but to reach the level where the mind quieted, and the vulgar world fell away, she’d needed a bit of help—a subtle assist that made everything land exactly where she wanted it.

It was risky.

But for two golden signboards, that risk was nothing.

Still… Xu Li had come to Jingling to deliver His Majesty’s verbal decree, and he spoke with Su Qingwu as if they were familiar. That meant he held real weight in the palace.

Yet in Mu Yunyao’s memories, she couldn’t recall such a person at all.

She would need Yue Wang to help her look into him. If things were truly as she suspected, she might be able to form a powerful, good connection—one that would let her swim far more smoothly in the capital later.

After resting for an hour, Madam Jin arrived with the Governor’s Wife. Once Mu Yunyao received the message, she hurried out to welcome them.

The fifty attendants in flowing white bowed in perfect unison, their posture graceful and refined. The madams froze on the spot, stunned.

The Governor’s Wife treated Mu Yunyao far more warmly than before.

This summer had been the most comfortable she’d had in years. The clothing Mu Yunyao had made for her was cool and breathable—she no longer had to worry about sweat clinging to her robes, and her mood naturally improved. Besides, Mu Yunyao had now become the benefactor of Jingling’s women and had received rewards from His Majesty. Befriending her was all gain and no loss.

The other madams understood that, too.

The only difference was that, before, Mu Yunyao had needed to please them carefully.

Now, it had flipped.

They had to mind their words, watch their tone, measure their smiles… and that sour, uncomfortable feeling—jealousy wrapped in pride—inevitably crept in.

There were too many guests. If Mu Yunyao brewed tea alone, she’d be overwhelmed. Yet she couldn’t serve only the Governor’s Wife and Madam Jin, or the others would feel slighted.

So she “took a break” the neatest way possible.

After leading everyone into the Xiaoxiang Bamboo Courtyard and settling them, she had Wei Yi, Yun Chun, and the rest come in.

The space was broad enough that even fifty people didn’t feel cramped.

When the tables and tableware were set out, the madams’ curiosity flared. This was the first time they’d seen tea prepared with so many tools.

Mu Yunyao stepped forward, bowed, and smiled brightly. “Madams, please enjoy Bu Xian Lou’s tea artistry.”

She withdrew after the greeting. The fifty bowed and offered salutations in unison.

These women were powerful in Jingling, yes—but none had ever received a salute from fifty people at once. Before they’d even tasted a sip, their hearts were already floating with satisfaction.

Then the brewing began.

White robes, dustless and drifting, like immortals descending.

On the women’s side, fingers were slender, wrists pale as jade—every movement soft, graceful, and winding like silk.

On the men’s side, strength and gentleness balanced perfectly—warm as polished jade, poised and elegant, their manner restrained yet refined.

Forget the tea being fragrant.

Even if someone had served plain water, it would’ve felt different.

When the tea was ready, the madams still hadn’t fully recovered.

Wei Yi and Yun Chun led the others forward in order, placing cups respectfully before each guest, then retreating with perfect decorum.

Only after they were gone did Madam Jin sigh in admiration. “From now on, aside from your place, I’m not going to any other tea house.”

Just that opening spectacle alone would crush the competition.

“Yes! I never knew tea could have so many nuances.” Another madam fanned herself, delighted. “Just watching was pleasing to the eye.”

Compliments poured in from every direction.

Mu Yunyao smiled, openly happy. “Thank you, madams. Hearing you say that puts my heart at ease. Bu Xian Lou’s opening shouldn’t lose money, then.”

Her tone made them laugh.

“If you lose money, we’ll personally bring people to support you!”

“If you lose money, we’ll drink until you earn it back!”

Xiaoxiang Bamboo Courtyard is filled with laughter.

After the jokes, they finally began to sip.

Some of the madams couldn’t tolerate tea. They held their cups, glanced around… and smiled, genuinely touched. Their tea had been replaced with flower-and-fruit infusions instead.

No wonder Mu Yunyao had risen so quickly in Jingling.

Her attention to detail was frightening.

Everyone left satisfied, and Mu Yunyao gained another string of praise. When she escorted them out, she even gifted each a small packet of sun-dried rosebuds—earning more laughter and affectionate teasing.

Only then, after an entire day of hosting, did Mu Yunyao finally relax for real. She poured herself a cup of fragrant tea and sat back, sipping slowly.

Steward Qin arrived with Wei Yi, Yun Chun, and the others behind him.

“Miss, Bu Xian Lou opens officially tomorrow.” Steward Qin bowed. “Do you have any final guidance for them?”

Mu Yunyao set her cup down.

“There isn’t much that needs repeating,” she said calmly. “Just remember this: from tomorrow onward, your identity is Bu Xian Lou’s tea stewards. Serving the guests well is your first priority.”

“If you can’t make the guests like Bu Xian Lou, then everything else is empty talk. Nothing can be achieved.”

Steward Qin’s spine chilled.

He’d nearly forgotten. There would be plenty of time later. First, Bu Xian Lou had to grow. If they rushed and exposed something unnatural—fine, no one could destroy Bu Xian Lou with His Majesty’s protection, but they could choose not to come.

And if guests stopped coming, Bu Xian Lou would become a hollow name.

“Yes, Miss,” everyone answered quickly.

Mu Yunyao nodded.

“Also, I’ll have people gather books on tea, poetry, and scholarship. Each of you pick what you like and study it thoroughly. I don’t need you to master everything—but every one of you must have one or two areas you can speak on with real depth.”

“Next—each of you must create a background for yourself. Where were you born? Where is your home? Do you have family? What did you do before? How did you come to Jingling? Why do you understand tea? The clearer and more detailed you make it, the better.”

“Then memorize it. Nail it into your bones. No matter who asks, you answer the same way every time.”

“Yes, Miss.”

“And one more thing.” Mu Yunyao’s gaze swept across them. “All of you are still too cold.”

“I don’t care what method you use—tie it to the background you created and change your temperament.”

“You can be aloof. Proud. Cynical. Pitiful. Arrogant. Naive. Innocent.”

“But you absolutely cannot have fifty people wearing the same face.”

“Once you choose a personality, maintain it. Don’t shift and change in front of outsiders.”

“…Yes, Miss.”

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 114

~ LOTUS FRAGRANCE SPREADS FAR ~

The moment the tea set was placed on the low table, it captured everyone’s attention.

The entire set was pure white, painted with lotus blossoms stretching to the horizon. Looking more closely, the scenery on the porcelain bore a striking resemblance to the lake view before them.

Su Qingwu finally couldn’t hold back. “Miss Mu… don’t tell me the pattern on this tea set was painted based on the scenery in front of us.”

“That’s right,” Mu Yunyao replied with a modest smile. “I’m afraid it will make the lords laugh.”

“How could it?” Su Qingwu said. “The tea set is exquisite, and the painting captures both form and spirit. Even I can’t help but like it.”

“Thank you for the praise.”

Mu Yunyao began to brew tea.

Su Qingwu had meant to say more, but the moment he saw her movements, his thoughts slowly drifted away.

She didn’t move quickly. Every lift of the hand, every tilt of the wrist flowed like water over smooth stone—gentle, elegant, and inexplicably soothing. Her slender, pale fingers held the white jade-like vessels so naturally that for a heartbeat, no one could tell which was more captivating: the tea ware… or the hands holding it.

A breeze passed through. Lotus fragrance rose in soft waves.

Watching her brew, it felt as though a faint chant of meditation drifted into their ears. Their sense of rank and identity blurred. Their minds quieted, empty and clear, until the tea aroma finally blossomed—and only then did they snap back, dazed, as if their bodies had been loosened from the inside out.

Mu Yunyao finished, folded her hands, and bowed, then personally carried the teacups to each of them.

Su Qingwu took his cup absentmindedly. The instant he lifted the lid, he froze.

In the white cup, the tea leaves had unfurled and gathered at the bottom like a lotus in full bloom.

His heart jolted. His grip loosened for half an instant, and the tea rippled. He nearly cried out—terrified he’d ruin that fragile beauty—when in the blink of an eye, the lotus scattered and reshaped into the silhouette of flying birds, like the lakeside scene they’d just admired.

For a long moment, none of them spoke.

They held their cups and stared, stunned.

“Lords,” Mu Yunyao reminded softly, “tea doesn’t taste as good once it cools.”

Only then did they come back to themselves.

The leaves had already sunk to the bottom. No lotus, no birds—nothing remained, like a dream that vanished upon waking, leaving only a trace of regret.

Eunuch Xu sighed, then took a small sip.

In an instant, it was as though he’d swallowed lotus fragrance itself, washing away that regret until all that remained was calm satisfaction.

Governor Zhang shook his head, almost as if trying to clear it. Even someone like him, who didn’t truly understand tea, could tell this cup was extraordinary.

He couldn’t help asking, “Miss Mu, what famous tea is this? Drinking it, I taste lotus fragrance everywhere—almost as if lotus blooms in my mouth.”

“It doesn’t have much of a name,” Mu Yunyao said. “I only picked the tenderest new leaves from my tea garden, selected them carefully, dried and pan-fired them… then used dew gathered from lotus leaves and lotus blossoms to brew it.”

Governor Zhang stared. “So this is the tea you personally pan-fired?”

“Yes.” Mu Yunyao smiled. “I was often busy with Ni Yun Fang and used tea to keep myself alert. But I’m picky—strong tea is too bitter for me. So I prepared some myself. I only hope the lords won’t find it laughable.”

Eunuch Xu spoke up at once. “Miss Mu, you said you’d give the tea to me to take back to the capital. You can’t go back on your word.”

Mu Yunyao looked as if she’d been handed a treasure. “Of course! As long as you don’t mind it, I’ll give you everything I prepared.”

For reasons he couldn’t quite name, Su Qingwu felt a flicker of displeasure.

“Miss Mu is truly biased,” he said, smiling. “I’m returning to the capital too. Are you not going to spare any for me?”

Eunuch Xu burst out laughing. “I forgot Lord Su is here. But Lord Su has always favored Longjing—don’t fight me for this one.”

Mu Yunyao immediately followed his lead. “Since Lord Su likes Longjing, then I’ll purchase some top-grade Longjing for Lord Su to bring back.”

Su Qingwu kept smiling, but his irritation deepened.

“I was only joking,” he said smoothly. “How could I let you spend money? I already sent someone to buy things. Since I came to Jiangnan, naturally I should bring gifts back for my family.”

Mu Yunyao smiled politely, but cold mockery rippled inwardly.

Yes. Su Qingwu valued family above all.

Even if he left home for only two or three days, he would still bring gifts back. Especially for the eldest Miss of the Su family—East Sea pearls, Sichuan brocade, Nanyun gauze… anything rare in this world, Su Qingwu had chased it down for her.

No wonder the noble girls of the capital had envied her until their eyes turned red.

Mu Yunyao’s expression dimmed slightly.

Su Qingwu’s brows drew together. His gaze lifted toward the six-story building not far away. “That is the Bu Xian Lou you spoke of?”

“Yes.”

With fragrant tea warming their hands, everyone’s guard lowered even more.

Eunuch Xu looked toward the building and remarked casually, “That tower seems to be missing a plaque.”

Mu Yunyao sighed softly, as if helpless. “It is. I wanted to commission a good one, but after looking at many, none of the calligraphy satisfied me.”

Eunuch Xu didn’t respond.

Mu Yunyao also didn’t press, as if it were only an offhand comment. She refilled their cups. The more they drank, the more remarkable the tea became.

Many teas tasted good at first, but grew dull the longer you sipped.

Mu Yunyao’s tea was the opposite.

The more you drank, the deeper the aftertaste became—like listening to a piece of Zen music. Every time you heard it again, you gained a new understanding.

After tea, Mu Yunyao led them around the rest of the garden.

With their minds calmed, the scenery became even more pleasing. Walking through the paths, it felt as if beauty waited at every turn. They toured for more than an hour without feeling tired.

By noon, Mu Yunyao had people prepare a meal.

“My lords, I asked the kitchen to make a few simple dishes. Would the lords honor me?”

Eunuch Xu shook his head. “No need. In a little while, we must depart for the capital.”

“So soon…” Mu Yunyao looked genuinely disappointed.

“Aren’t you planning to open a tea house in the capital one day?” Eunuch Xu smiled. “When your wish comes true, I’ll have another chance to taste your tea.”

“Then I’ll have to work twice as hard.”

Mu Yunyao brought out the prepared tea leaves, then added some delicate pastries, and personally escorted them out of Jin Xiu Yuan.

Just as he was about to step into the carriage, Eunuch Xu suddenly turned back and said, “Miss Mu—about the plaque for Bu Xian Lou. If you truly can’t find one you like… then wait a while.”

Mu Yunyao blinked, looking puzzled, and turned her eyes toward Governor Zhang.

Governor Zhang and Cao Yunian only smiled and said nothing as they helped Xu Li and Su Qingwu into the carriage. But in their hearts, both of them quietly decided:

The opening gift they would send to Mu Yunyao had to increase by another 30%.

As the carriage began to move, Su Qingwu abruptly lifted the curtain on the side wall. His phoenix eyes fixed straight on Mu Yunyao.

Mu Yunyao looked up, meeting that deep gaze head-on.

In those ink-dark pupils, her reflection wavered, and a faint, unreadable glimmer passed through.

She curved her lips into a perfectly measured smile, dipped into a curtsy, and said clearly, “I respectfully see the lords off!”

The wheels rolled forward.

Only when Mu Yunyao’s figure had completely disappeared did Su Qingwu finally let the curtain fall.

Inside, Xu Li cradled the tea jar Mu Yunyao had given him. It seemed he could still smell that clean, elegant fragrance. He couldn’t help sighing.

“So many people say the capital is prosperous, full of heroes and talent… yet who would’ve thought that in a place like Jingling City, there could be a person, and a landscape, gathered with such heaven-and-earth spiritual beauty?”

Su Qingwu smiled faintly and nodded. “Yes…”

Spiritual beauty was one thing.

But what truly made her dangerous… was how frighteningly smart she was.

Even someone like Eunuch Xu—who had seen countless schemes—had been led along.

And that last sentence Xu Li said…

Did Mu Yunyao truly not understand it?

Su Qingwu didn’t believe that for a second.

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 113

~ JADE BAMBOO, DEEP IN LAYERED GREEN ~

Steward Qin had been up early, personally watching Wei Yi, Yun Chun, and the others change into fresh clothes and wait in the front courtyard. When Mu Yunyao arrived, he led her inside immediately.

“Miss, take a look. Are they presentable enough?”

“Greetings, Miss.”

All fifty bowed in unison—white robes, white skirts, upright posture, eyes bright, their spirits sharp and clean. There was an indescribable vitality to them now.

Mu Yunyao felt satisfied. They’d clearly worked hard. Just their bearing alone was several levels better than before.

“Good. Follow me to the entrance. We’ll prepare to welcome the lords.”

Su Qingwu and Xu Li rode in the same carriage. They both served in the palace and were both considered “favored figures” before His Majesty, so they had some friendship. Their words were naturally more casual.

Su Qingwu spoke first. “Eunuch Xu seems to hold that Miss Mu in unusually high regard.”

Xu Li smiled and glanced at Su Qingwu. “And Lord Su is not exactly stingy with praise either. Yesterday, if you hadn’t asked about Bu Xian Lou, we wouldn’t have been curious enough to come take a look.”

Su Qingwu’s expression remained steady. “Miss Mu has a pure heart. To spread such a precious embroidery technique so freely, it’s only right to lend a little support.”

“That’s exactly what I thought,” Xu Li said warmly. “Seems we’re of one mind, Lord Su.”

They exchanged a smile, gentle on the surface. Whatever it truly meant, only they themselves knew.

As they spoke, the carriage arrived at Jin Xiu Yuan. The wheels stopped. The driver set down the footstool. The two stepped out one after another, and the moment their feet hit the ground, both paused.

The sight before them was… a little too striking.

Mu Yunyao stood at the front. Behind her, a group of four to five dozen people lined up, men and women on separate sides. All wore white. Their waists were neatly belted, sleeves and hems slightly wide, giving them a floating, airy elegance. They bowed together, white robes fluttering, pale and dustless like figures stepped out of a painting.

“Greetings, my lords.”

Su Qingwu’s gaze lingered on Mu Yunyao.

Her outfit was even more understated than the people behind her. White on top, her skirt fading from white into a soft moon-white. At first glance, she didn’t “shine” like the others. But the more you looked, the more your eyes were drawn back to her.

Especially the fresh magnolia pinned in her hair. The petals were slender, white as snow, making her look even more delicate and spirited.

“Miss Mu, there’s no need for such formalities.”

Governor Zhang and Cao Yunian were naturally present too, but both kept themselves slightly behind Su Qingwu and Xu Li, smiling politely and not interrupting.

Mu Yunyao rose and guided them into Jin Xiu Yuan. Wei Yi, Yun Chun, and the others stayed bowed until everyone had entered, then straightened and followed at a respectful distance.

As soon as they passed the gate, a burst of green filled the eye.

Bamboo rose thick and tall, straight as spears, lush and flourishing. Leaves crossed and rustled softly. On the bamboo poles were faint speckled marks, like tear stains.

Governor Zhang couldn’t help exclaiming, “Xiangfei bamboo? Rare to see in Jingling.”

Mu Yunyao’s eyes curved with a smile. “They say, ‘Holding to its integrity through frost, unseen by any, it keeps its heart empty as it waits for the phoenix.’ Today, being able to welcome my lords, even the Xiangfei bamboo looks more pleasing. Doesn’t it fit the poem perfectly?”

Governor Zhang shook his head again and again, amused. “Miss Mu flatters too much. It’s your scenery that’s good. We’re the ones benefiting, a bunch of crude men.”

“If Lord Zhang calls himself crude,” Mu Yunyao replied, smiling sincerely, “then my tea house might as well close its doors.”

Governor Zhang blinked. “Why is that?”

“If even you are ‘crude,’ then who in Jingling is worthy to drink tea here? If no one is worthy, what’s the point of staying open?” Her tone was light, but it carried a natural sincerity. “Everyone knows that while Lord Zhang has served as governor, you’ve done real work for Jingling and Jiangnan. Even the children in Jingling still chant it:

Jingling River rose three chi high,
Wilder than Qiantang’s roaring tide.
The governor and prefect gave the order,
And dared the waves to bow their heads.

Su Qingwu kept a polite smile, but Xu Li, on the side, looked genuinely curious.

“‘Governor and prefect gave the order, and dared the waves to bow their heads.’ The Jingling River nearly burst its banks several times in past years, and later stabilized. Even His Majesty praised it. Lord Zhang truly deserves great credit. The prefect mentioned there… is Lord Cao, yes? I recall before Lord Cao became Salt Transport Commissioner, he served as Jingling’s prefect.”

Cao Yunian hurriedly nodded. “Yes. Eunuch Xu has an excellent memory.”

“The two lords have the people’s true support,” Xu Li said, pleased. “That’s why even children remember your achievements.”

Governor Zhang and Cao Yunian both flushed with excitement. Xu Li was a trusted figure at His Majesty’s side. If he spoke even one good sentence before the throne, it would be an enormous opportunity. Both men were already thinking the same thing.

They owed Mu Yunyao a huge opening gift.

Mu Yunyao, knowing perfectly well that too much praise invited suspicion, shifted the conversation as if her compliment had been casual and unintentional. She led them past the bamboo grove and deeper into the garden.

The further they went, the more Jin Xiu Yuan revealed its refinement.

When they reached a nine-turn corridor bridge, the lake lay calm, reflecting willow branches that draped like silk. Gulls played in clusters. Lotus leaves and blossoms swayed as if greeting and sending them off. The scene was so beautiful it felt like stepping into an ink-wash landscape.

They stopped on the bridge.

For a moment, no one spoke. Everyone’s minds felt rinsed clean, as if the dust of the mortal world had fallen away.

For some reason, Su Qingwu turned slightly, and his gaze landed on Mu Yunyao beside him.

One hand rested on the white marble railing. Mu Yunyao’s eyes were on the lotus-covered lake. Her smile was gentle and distant, not the bright, sweet expression she wore while speaking. It made his heart tighten without warning.

A slanting breeze lifted her skirt hem, tugged at the loose hair behind her. One fine strand drifted past him, brushing the back of his hand like a feather. The faint itch ran all the way to his chest.

His arm stiffened.

His heart, strangely, wavered.

He had met many women. Royal princesses, noble daughters. Those who chased him, those who looked down on him. Yet no one had ever made him feel as complicated as Mu Yunyao did.

Mu Yunyao didn’t notice his shift at all. After they’d admired the view for a while, she spoke lightly.

“My lords, the place I prepared for tea is just ahead. Enjoying fine tea while admiring such scenery, isn’t it perfect?”

Xu Li sighed softly. “We haven’t even tasted the tea yet, and my mind is already half-drunk. Miss Mu’s tea house scenery is truly special.”

“Thank you for the praise, Sir.”

Not far ahead stood the six-story building Mu Yunyao planned to name Bu Xian Lou, but Xu Li liked the lakeside view even more and suggested drinking tea there.

Everything had already been prepared—it only needed to be moved. Mu Yunyao immediately had Steward Qin arrange it.

When Steward Qin returned, he spoke to Mu Yunyao quietly while no one was near.

“Miss, Madam Jin sent Yin Hong to say this. She wants you to focus on hosting the lords today. She and the other madams will come in the afternoon.”

Warmth rose in Mu Yunyao’s chest. “Alright. Since it’s only the lords for now, we won’t have Wei Yi and Yun Chun perform the full tea display. I’ll receive them personally.”

“Yes, Miss.”

The group settled into the pavilion.

The tables were low, and the seats were soft cushions embroidered with lotus patterns. Once everyone sat down, their posture naturally relaxed. The atmosphere, too, loosened and softened, becoming far more easy and unguarded.

* The poem from Zhang Bi in the Tang Dynasty is titled Yongzhu (Wing Bamboo). The whole of the article is as follows:
The trees are full of color and clouds, and the king and his grandson are full of court.
Ling Shuang has no one to see and treats Feng modestly all day.
Who let the wind add to the singing, the self-pity dashing out of the dust.
Zhu Men has many leisure areas throughout.
Its just time to move the clouds and the green moss.

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 112

~ THE TEA HOUSE — BU XIAN LOU ~

“Thank you, Sir.” Mu Yunyao’s eyes shone. “I have my own tea garden, and my tea house opens tomorrow. I’ll definitely manage it well and spread Bu Xian Lou’s reputation far and wide. Maybe in a few years, when my tea house grows big enough, I can even open one in the capital. Then I can kneel outside the palace and thank His Majesty for his grace in person.”

Su Qingwu had been watching her the entire time, his eyes shifting. “Bu Xian Lou? A tea house called Bu Xian Lou—does that name have some meaning?”

“I opened the tea house inside a garden. There’s a small six-story pavilion within it,” Mu Yunyao explained. “I want this place to become a true gathering ground for people who understand tea and love tea—somewhere they can exchange thoughts.”

“Tea Sage once said:

I do not envy golden goblets,
I do not envy white jade cups.
I do not envy entering court at dawn,
I do not envy mounting the terrace at dusk.
Of all that I envy, one thing above a thousand and ten thousand—
It is the West River’s waters that once flowed down to Jingling City.

So that pavilion is called Bu Xian Lou. And inside, drinking tea costs no silver at all.”

Eunuch Xu nodded faintly. Her words had piqued his interest—not because he believed her tea would be astonishing (he’d been rewarded with tribute tea from the palace, after all), but because he himself loved tea. And the world Bu Xian Lou described was too beautiful not to want to see.

“Bu Xian Lou… it truly is a good name,” Eunuch Xu said. “Even the name alone is worth a visit. Earlier you said your tea house opens tomorrow—would you be willing to invite us to sit for a while as well?”

“If the lords will come, Bu Xian Lou will be honored beyond its humble walls.” Mu Yunyao looked delighted, a joy that made others feel lighter just by seeing it. “I’ll personally brew tea to receive you.”

“Good.” Eunuch Xu smiled. “Then it’s settled.”

“Yes.” Mu Yunyao bowed. “Tomorrow at Si hour, I will respectfully welcome the lords’ arrival.”

Mu Yunyao practically floated out of the front hall into the inner courtyard. She curtsied to Madam Jin with heartfelt gratitude.

“Thank you, Madam, for warning me in advance.”

Seeing her expression, Madam Jin knew everything had gone smoothly and felt happy for her as well. “As long as it went well.”

If Ni Yun Fang could receive His Majesty’s personal calligraphy, it would be a golden signboard—an unshakable shield. As long as Ni Yun Fang stood, the merit of teaching the people would keep being praised, and in the end, she and Cao Yunian would benefit too.

“Madam,” Mu Yunyao said, “Bu Xian Lou opens tomorrow at Si hour. Please honor it with your presence.”

“I’ve waited so long—of course I’ll go.” Madam Jin smiled. “I want to taste your tea-brewing too. But your hand…”

“It’s fine.” Mu Yunyao’s voice was firm. “The scab has already formed; it’s mostly healed.”

Even if her hand broke, she would still push through today.

“That’s good.”

Leaving the Cao Residence, Mu Yunyao went straight to Jinxiu Garden.

When Steward Qin saw her rush in, he thought something serious had happened. After hearing her explain, he froze, staring blankly.

“Miss… you mean a eunuch is coming to drink tea here?”

“Yes.” Mu Yunyao nodded. “That lord was pale and beardless, his voice slightly sharp, his aura… unusual. Thinking carefully, he should be an inner attendant from the capital.”

She knew Steward Qin belonged to Yue Wang. She was worried the eunuch might recognize him, so she’d come to warn him. If it was inconvenient, he could avoid appearing.

Steward Qin recovered, looking at her with open amazement. “Miss chose the timing too perfectly. If we manage this well, Bu Xian Lou may become famous in one stroke!”

Just hearing the name made him want to drink a cup here:

I do not envy golden goblets…
I envy only the West River’s waters that flowed down to Jingling…

A tea house could ride that poem to immortality.

Seeing his reaction—and that he showed no intention of hiding—Mu Yunyao understood: Steward Qin was confident he could conceal his identity. And it made sense. If he could be recognized so easily, he wouldn’t dare move openly in Jingling.

“I hope it truly goes as you say,” Mu Yunyao said softly, “and Bu Xian Lou becomes known throughout Jingling.”

Steward Qin hesitated, worry creeping in. “It’s just… the fifty still fall short in tea-brewing. If many guests come tomorrow…”

Mu Yunyao thought briefly. “Tomorrow, several lords will attend. Madam Jin will likely invite other madams as well. We won’t receive ordinary guests.”

“Wei Yi and Yun Chun’s group may be lacking individually, but when they brew together, the scene is incredibly impressive. So for the opening, have them all brew once together as a display—then choose the most skilled few to serve the guests.”

Steward Qin considered it, then nodded. “That’s all we can do. I’ll have them practice again right away.”

“Good. I’ll go through the garden too—see what we should highlight tomorrow.”

Steward Qin suddenly remembered something. “Right—since the tea house has a name now, should we order a plaque overnight and hang it?”

Mu Yunyao shook her head, a small smile curving her lips. “A plaque we order ourselves is boring. I’m thinking… maybe I can get someone to bestow one.”

Steward Qin didn’t understand at first. Only after Mu Yunyao left did he suddenly jolt upright—his face exploding into wild joy.

If they could truly obtain such a bestowal…

Then His Royal Highness’s grand plan would be within reach.

He had once thought letting Mu Yunyao use the garden to open a tea house was a distraction.

Now he realized—

They’d dug up a priceless treasure.

He had to write to Yue Wang immediately: no matter what, this “treasure” must be brought into the wang’s residence!

Mu Yunyao stayed busy deep into the night, running tomorrow’s steps again and again in her mind. Only in the latter half of the night did she finally sleep. Two hours later, she woke, yet felt no fatigue at all—only bright, excited clarity.

Su Qing brought pastries and bird’s nest porridge, her face tight with nerves. “Yao’er, you’ll have so much to do later. Hurry and eat something now.”

“Thank you, Mother.” Mu Yunyao ate happily, then noticed that Su Qing looked as if she wanted to speak but couldn’t decide what to say. “Mother, what is it? Do you have something to remind me?”

Su Qing hesitated, then said softly, “Gaining it is fortune. Losing it is fate. Keep a calm heart. Don’t be too nervous—nervousness makes mistakes easier.”

Yesterday, Mu Yunyao had already explained everything to her: the situation, the plan, the stakes. After hearing it, Su Qing had become even more anxious than Mu Yunyao herself, already starting to fear the “what ifs” before anything even began.

Mu Yunyao laughed, stepped forward, and hugged Su Qing, nuzzling into her neck.

“With Mother supporting me, I feel like it has to succeed. Just wait here for my good news!”

“Alright.” Seeing Mu Yunyao like this, Su Qing’s anxious heart finally steadied. She helped Mu Yunyao change clothes, then combed her hair carefully. Looking through the bronze mirror, she sighed softly.

“Yao’er is getting prettier and prettier.”

Mu Yunyao’s eyes curved with a smile. “That’s because I take after Mother. Mother is beautiful, so I’m beautiful too.”

Su Qing tapped her forehead lightly. “That thick skin definitely didn’t come from me.”

Mu Yunyao immediately protested and clung to her until Su Qing admitted she’d “spoken wrong.” Only then—seeing there was less than half an hour left until 9:00 AM—did Mu Yunyao bring Jin Lan and Jin Qiao to Jinxiu Garden.

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 111

~ A RETURN GIFT FOR THE EMPEROR ~

Mu Yunyao nodded firmly. “I’ve actually had this thought for a long time—I just never dared to hope for it. Now that such a tremendous blessing has fallen into my lap, I can finally make my wish come true.”

Hearing that, Madam Jin felt even more uneasy, as if Mu Yunyao were treating it too lightly. “Say it first. Let me hear.” If it was inappropriate, she could still persuade her to adjust it.

“I want to ask His Majesty for a piece of calligraphy,” Mu Yunyao said clearly. “Just the three characters: Ni Yun Fang. After I rebuild the embroidery workshop, I’ll make it into a plaque and hang it above the door. Then no petty villain would dare lay a hand on Ni Yun Fang again!”

Madam Jin immediately nodded again and again. “I was afraid you’d be too rushed to think of something suitable. Who would’ve thought you’d consider it even more thoroughly than I did? This is good—very good. When Lord Su speaks with you later, tell him this request.”

Yin Hong entered to report. “Madam, the Master sent word—he asks Miss Mu to go to the front hall.”

“Understood.” Madam Jin gave Mu Yunyao an encouraging look. “Go quickly.”

Su Qingwu sat beside Governor Zhang. When a servant announced Mu Yunyao’s arrival, his tea-drinking hand paused, and his gaze drifted toward the doorway before he could stop it.

Mu Yunyao stepped in slowly, posture flawless as she greeted them properly.

“Greetings to the Lords.”

She’d been recovering these past days and was much better, but her complexion still carried a faint pallor, and her chin looked slightly sharper than before. It only made her clear eyes appear even larger—when she lifted her gaze, a soft brilliance seemed to flow within them, unexpectedly captivating.

Su Qingwu withdrew his eyes, yet his mind flashed to that night—the warmth and softness his arms had held. She was so small, so light, almost as if her bones were made of softness. It made a person instinctively cautious, afraid of hurting her with even the slightest pressure…

“Lord Su?” Governor Zhang looked at him, puzzled. The message from the capital was naturally more appropriate for Su Qingwu to deliver.

Su Qingwu came back to himself at once and spoke evenly.

“Miss Mu’s Ni Yun Fang has rendered merit to Jingling City. His Majesty intends to reward you. Since gifts have already been bestowed before, His Majesty couldn’t immediately think of something more fitting, so a verbal decree was sent: Miss Mu may state anything she wishes to request.”

From the moment she entered, Mu Yunyao had noticed a middle-aged man seated near Su Qingwu. Though dressed plainly, his face was pale and hairless, with that faintly soft, yin aura—clearly a palace eunuch. This must be the one delivering the Emperor’s verbal decree.

Once she connected the dots, she turned toward the capital and bowed deeply, kowtowing with full reverence. Only then did she face Su Qingwu again.

“Lord Su, receiving His Majesty’s rewards, this common girl is filled with fear and gratitude. My mother and I only recently arrived in Jingling. We’ve received care from Jingling’s people and Madam Jin in many ways—I’m endlessly grateful. I thought there was no way to repay it. Only my embroidery skill was worth anything, so I openly taught it, merely to repay Jingling in some small measure. I dare not claim merit.”

Su Qingwu narrowed his eyes slightly. His peripheral vision swept over Eunuch Xu standing to the side, and the corner of his lips lifted faintly.

Earlier, Mu Yunyao had bluntly declared that she spread embroidery techniques for silver.

Now it had become “Repaying Jingling.”

Small as she was, she certainly knew how to adjust her tune depending on who listened.

“Miss Mu’s heart is rare,” Su Qingwu said calmly. “But His Majesty has spoken. Since he intends to reward you, you may speak boldly.”

Mu Yunyao’s face lit with delight and gratitude. She turned again to bow toward the capital, then hesitated as if embarrassed before speaking softly.

“In truth… this common girl does have one wish, though it feels rather bold.”

Su Qingwu’s attendant eunuch couldn’t help speaking. “Miss, whatever your wish is, speak freely.”

Mu Yunyao’s cheeks flushed, her shy look nearly spilling over. Eunuch Xu grew even more curious—was this little girl about to reveal some wild desire to serve by the Emperor’s side?

Mu Yunyao hesitated, then finally said, “I wish to request a piece of His Majesty’s calligraphy.”

Eunuch Xu froze.

Then, in his heart, he scolded himself hard—he’d been in the palace too long and had started thinking everyone’s intentions were dark. This girl was so young, and those eyes were so clear and bright… how could she be thinking anything indecent?

Su Qingwu, noticing the faint rise of goodwill in Eunuch Xu’s expression, examined Mu Yunyao more carefully.

Others might not know, but he did.

This Eunuch, Xu Li, was among the most likely candidates to become Chief Eunuch. Normally, he was airtight, impeccable—deeply trusted by the Emperor. Countless people tried desperately to earn his favor, yet he always remained ambiguous, unreadable.

And Mu Yunyao had somehow, as if by instinct, pressed the right spot.

Eunuch Xu’s eyes held surprise. “You want His Majesty’s calligraphy?”

“Yes.” Mu Yunyao’s smile was bright, her eyes shining. “His Majesty’s grace is vast, and as the true dragon, his presence is majestic. His calligraphy carries true-dragon aura as well, and will surely bless this common girl with peace, fortune, and health.”

Her smile was dazzling. Her eyes were so crystalline they practically glowed. Even Eunuch Xu couldn’t help staring for a beat.

This little girl… was something else.

In the palace, even the most upright censors had to flatter the Emperor sometimes. But Eunuch Xu had never seen anyone speak praise with such sincerity—so natural it made you want to believe it.

“Very well,” Eunuch Xu said with a faint smile. “When I return, I’ll report your words exactly as you said them.”

The light in Mu Yunyao’s eyes grew even brighter. “Thank you, Sir.”

Exactly as said—perfect.

That was the whole point. Mu Yunyao wanted Eunuch Xu to speak well of her in front of the Emperor.

Then Mu Yunyao continued, voice gentle but eager.

“Sir, my tea house opens tomorrow. I have a batch of tea leaves I personally pan-fired. May I ask Sir to present them to His Majesty? Consider it my return gift, expressing my gratitude.”

Eunuch Xu hesitated. He’d seen many receive imperial rewards, but he’d never seen anyone insist on giving a return gift to the Emperor.

“This…”

Mu Yunyao lowered her eyes slightly, fingers twisting together in anxious disappointment. Her voice softened, almost sad.

“What I’m best at is embroidery, but I injured my hand and can’t embroider a screen to repay His Majesty. So I can only offer the tea leaves I prepared earlier, hoping His Majesty might feel my gratitude.”

Eunuch Xu sighed, not unkindly. “To be honest, anything His Majesty consumes must pass through layers of inspection. Even tea must be designated tribute. Your personally prepared tea is heartfelt, but I fear it cannot enter the palace.”

Mu Yunyao’s eyes filled with disappointment—then a spark of hope flickered.

“Then… could I gift the tea to Sir instead? If Sir carries it back to the capital and drinks it there, then my heart will at least reach the capital, even if the tea cannot enter the palace.”

Eunuch Xu blinked, then burst into laughter.

“Alright.” His expression softened with real warmth. “I happen to love tea as well. I’ll gladly taste Miss Mu’s handiwork.”

This girl’s sincerity was rare indeed.

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 110

~ EVEN HEAVEN IS HELPING HER ~

After Mu Yunyao’s words, some of the people below looked thoughtful, while others still seemed lost.

Mu Yunyao didn’t rush them. She only instructed them to practice whenever they had free time, then went with Steward Qin to the front courtyard’s flower hall.

Steward Qin quickly ordered someone to bring over nourishing tonics—bird’s nest, ginseng, and more. Mu Yunyao thanked him and had Jin Lan and Jin Qiao pack everything away carefully.

“Today, aside from welcoming Wei Yi and Yun Chun back, there’s something else I want to discuss with Steward Qin.”

“Miss, please speak.”

“Ni Yun Fang was destroyed by the fire, but with the credit of spreading embroidery techniques, it can be rebuilt anytime. Our tea house, on the other hand—we’ve been preparing for so long. It’s time to open.”

“You’re right,” Steward Qin agreed. “Has Miss chosen a name for the tea house?”

“Not yet. I’ll think carefully these next two days and have a plaque made and delivered. I’ll also trouble Steward Qin to keep urging Wei Yi, Yun Chun, and the others to practice hard. When the time comes, we’ll be relying on them to hold up the scene.”

“Rest assured, Miss.” Steward Qin nodded firmly. “After seeing your tea-brewing skill twice, I understand the standard. I’ll supervise them using you as the model—until they truly learn to carry themselves properly.”

“Good. Then I’ll leave it to Steward Qin.”

“Miss is too polite.”

Far away in Yuexi, at Yue Wang’s residence, two letters from Mu Yunyao arrived in succession. The light in Yue Wang’s eyes turned increasingly cold—especially after the second letter.

Ni Yun Fang had suffered trouble again and again.

Yu Heng presented another box that had come with the letter. “Your Royal Highness, Miss Mu also sent this.”

Yue Wang opened it.

Inside were banknotes worth twenty thousand taels.

To others, twenty thousand might not be worth blinking at. But to Yuexi, it was enough to relieve an urgent crisis.

Yuexi was harsh and bitterly cold. On top of that, his imperial father had always disliked him. The Ministry of Revenue’s attitude toward Yuexi was even more indifferent and perfunctory. Now they even dare to delay military funds at will.

Who would believe it?

A prince of the empire—held in check by petty officials.

A hint of ridicule flashed through Yue Wang’s eyes. He spread the banknotes on the table.

“Yu Heng,” he said coldly, “if I can’t even protect what’s mine, then what is the point of being a wang? Pass down the order. Use our people at court. Help Mu Yunyao seize control of Jingling City. Ni Yun Fang—this wang will protect it.”

“Yes, Your Royal Highness.” A chill rolled off him like frost. Yu Heng’s heart shuddered. “This subordinate will handle it at once.”

Mu Yunyao had no idea her letter had stirred Yue Wang’s anger. Right now, she was still mulling over what to name the tea house.

Su Qing carried in a bowl of bird’s nest porridge. Seeing Mu Yunyao still lost in thought, she couldn’t help but ache for her.

“Stop thinking so hard. The more you force it, the more you won’t find it. Rest a bit—maybe inspiration will strike.” When she’d named Ni Yun Fang back then, it had been exactly like this.

Mu Yunyao casually tossed the book aside and leaned close to Su Qing, sniffing with exaggerated greed. “Mother’s cooking is the best. This bird’s nest porridge smells amazing.”

“You have a tongue sharper than a puppy’s nose,” Su Qing scolded fondly. “The slightest thing off and you taste it. Your mother has been forced into it—when I cook now, I’m careful even lifting the lid, afraid it’ll pick up smoke and ruin your appetite.”

“Mother is the best to me.” Mu Yunyao burrowed into Su Qing’s arms, acting spoiled. Her senses were keen—if the flavor were even slightly wrong, she would notice. But she was never picky. Even if it didn’t taste great, she would still eat it.

Su Qing was the one who refused to let her suffer, fussing over every detail until the food was just right.

And truly, lately, Su Qing’s cooking had been getting better and better.

Su Qing smiled as she watched Mu Yunyao finish the entire bowl, then urged her, “Stop exhausting yourself over that name. If you really can’t think of one, Mother will help.”

“Alright.” Mu Yunyao nodded obediently. “I’ll rest.”

Su Qing looked satisfied. After seeing Mu Yunyao settle into bed, she went out and quietly closed the door.

After waiting a bit, Mu Yunyao sat up, retrieved the book she’d tossed aside, and returned to the window to keep flipping through it.

A shadow appeared.

Liu Liang stood silently outside the window.

Mu Yunyao looked up without thinking—and met his cold eyes.

Her heart jumped so hard it nearly flipped. She shivered, forced out a breath, and glared.

“Liu Liang! Are you trying to scare someone to death?”

A trace of awkwardness flickered in Liu Liang’s eyes. “Master… I’m sorry…”

Mu Yunyao patted her chest. “Forget it. I haven’t asked you yet—was the Qinhuai trip smooth?”

“Mhm.” Liu Liang’s gaze dropped to Mu Yunyao’s hand. “Miss… you’re injured?”

“It’s nothing. Just a small cut. It’s mostly healed.” If she hadn’t done a few things to deal with Su Qingwu, her hand wouldn’t still hurt now.

“You just got back. Go rest for two days—otherwise I’ll look like a harsh master.”

Liu Liang looked at her again. Under the clear light of her eyes, he somehow couldn’t squeeze out a single word. He only flashed away from the courtyard like a shadow.

Mu Yunyao blinked, opened the window wider, propped her chin up, and looked around thoughtfully.

Martial arts really were convenient…

She should learn a couple of moves from Liu Liang, too. At least then, if danger came, she could protect herself a bit more.

And also—

In such a short time, Liu Liang seemed… a little more talkative.

Two days later, the Emperor’s reply reached Jingling City. Madam Jin sent Yin Hong to invite Mu Yunyao over.

During this period, Madam Jin had been busy working on connections and hadn’t had time to visit Mu Yunyao. Today, seeing Mu Yunyao’s complexion looking much healthier, Madam Jin felt relieved.

“How are the injuries on your body and hand?”

“Thank you for your concern, Madam. I’m much better.”

Mu Yunyao greeted properly and added, “But Madam’s complexion doesn’t look very good. These days have been chaotic—Madam must take extra care. The first three months are the most unstable.”

Seeing Mu Yunyao still thinking of her, Madam Jin felt warmed. It proved her effort running around these past days hadn’t been in vain.

“These two days I’ve had some nausea. It’ll pass.” Madam Jin waved it off, then got straight to the point. “I called you here mainly because of Ni Yun Fang. His Majesty learned what happened in Jingling and was furious. The Assistant Prefect and the Pacification Commissioner will soon be escorted to the capital for trial.”

“And His Majesty intends to compensate you. Do you have anything you wish to request?”

Mu Yunyao froze, then lifted her head, eyes wide with disbelief.

“Madam… do you mean what I think you mean?”

Madam Jin’s smile was bright as she nodded. “The censors have been pestering His Majesty nonstop, so this message was released. The one who benefits is you—but you must know where the line is.”

Mu Yunyao nodded hard.

Inside, her heart was already blooming into wild joy.

Wonderful.

Truly wonderful.

It was as if even Heaven was helping her.

“Madam,” Mu Yunyao said quickly, voice steady despite the excitement in her chest, “I’ve already decided.”

Madam Jin’s expression tightened. “This isn’t a game. You must think carefully. His Majesty’s words are gold—but if you ask beyond what’s appropriate, even if he agrees now, his later thunderous wrath could leave you without bones. You decided so quickly… it makes me uneasy.”
