Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 128

Chapter 128: Liu Liang’s Identity

When Steward Qin heard that she had arrived, he quickly came forward to welcome her.

“Miss, you have come. About the signboard…”

“I know. In a while, I will have Liu Liang bring the calligraphy over. You may have someone copy it and mount it into a signboard.”

“Good, good. I have already found the right person. He is the most famous mounting master in Jingling City. He will certainly make the signboard flawless.”

Mu Yunyao could not help smiling.

“Naturally, I trust your eye.”

Only then did Steward Qin realize that he had been far too anxious. He could not help chuckling.

“Miss, now that we have His Majesty’s signboard, the number of people coming to reserve seats today has suddenly more than doubled. Reservations are already lined up until a month from now. Also, early this morning, several traveling merchants came to order tea leaves. It is only that our tea garden is too small and cannot keep up with the supply.”

His tone was full of regret. Seeing people come to their door holding silver, yet being unable to take that silver into their hands, truly made one’s heart ache.

“Our tea garden is small, but the whole of Jiangnan is vast. We can purchase fresh tea leaves and roast them ourselves. For places where transportation is inconvenient, we can directly send over masters who have learned how to roast tea. Find a courtyard there, hang up a Buxian Tower sign, and both buying and selling will become convenient.

“In the future, when Buxian Tower grows larger and we wish to open tea houses elsewhere, we will already have a foundation there. Why not do it?”

Steward Qin froze for a moment, then slapped his forehead.

“Is my brain made of wood? Such a simple principle, yet I did not even think it through. I have made Miss laugh.”

“You simply did not think of it for a moment. However, if we go elsewhere, everything must be considered clearly in advance. The people sent out must also be reliable. After all, once the place is far away, trouble can easily breed.

“Our Buxian Tower hangs a signboard bestowed by His Majesty. The quality of the tea leaves must remain consistent from beginning to end. Even if we go elsewhere, we must strictly control it. We must never smash our own signboard.”

“Yes. I will certainly choose carefully. Miss, please rest assured. The account books will also be delivered on time. When the time comes, we will settle Miss’s share punctually.”

Mu Yunyao smiled.

“That is naturally good. In the future, I will be sitting at home while money falls from the sky.”

Steward Qin quickly went down to make arrangements. Mu Yunyao called Liu Liang over and asked him to investigate the beggars at the garden gate.

Jin Lan could not help asking, “Miss, why are you interested in those people?”

No matter the place, beggars were never few. Xiling in the Capital was the same, let alone Jingling City.

“I simply feel that they are somewhat interesting. If they can be used, then not only will we open a path of survival for them, but we will also effortlessly find people we can make use of. It would be killing two birds with one stone.”

“Miss wishes to use those beggars?”

Jin Lan could not help worrying.

“Although there are good people among beggars as well, many of them have already formed their temperaments. They only think of accepting others’ charity. Even if there is work for them to do, they may be lazy and slippery. I fear they may not be fit for great use.”

“For now, I am only taking a look. If they truly can be used, they will still have to be carefully selected.”

Now that Buxian Tower had gradually stabilized, and once Niyun Pavilion reopened, it would also bring in gold by the measure each day. It was time to think of a way to cultivate some people of her own. Later, when she opened embroidery pavilions and tea houses in other places, they would be useful.

Mu Yunyao handed the matter to Liu Liang, then felt at ease and went to busy herself with other things.

By evening, Liu Liang came back to report.

“Master, I have already found the place where the beggar you mentioned stays. Along with the young girl who spoke to you today, they both come from the Ciyou Bureau.”

Mu Yunyao was somewhat surprised.

“The Ciyou Bureau?”

“Yes. It is a place specifically used to take in the elderly without support and young children of Jingling City. The young girl is named Cai Qing. The child who spoke with you is called Nan’er. They only came outside the garden in the past few days.

“That Cai Qing also specifically learned embroidery before, but halfway through, something happened to a child at the Ciyou Bureau. She returned to take care of that child, and so she was delayed.”

“That is rather interesting. Let us watch for now.”

“Master, do you need people? I have already recruited some men under me. If you have use for them, simply give your orders.”

Mu Yunyao was somewhat astonished. After she had given Liu Liang silver before, she had let go and no longer asked about it. She had not expected that in such a short time, Liu Liang had actually found people he could use.

“Can they be trusted?”

“They can.”

Liu Liang nodded.

Looking at his certain expression, Mu Yunyao suddenly asked, “Liu Liang, speaking of it, I still do not know your real name. What did you do before?”

She could trust Liu Liang’s character because, in her previous life, she had seen him remain by Jin Wang’s side, loyal to him from beginning to end. But when it came down to it, whether in the past or now, she knew absolutely nothing about Liu Liang’s history.

Liu Liang’s entire body stiffened. Then, abruptly, he dropped to one knee before Mu Yunyao.

“I do not remember. But Master, please rest assured. Liu Liang will never betray you.”

Seeing such a strong reaction from him, Mu Yunyao, who had originally only asked casually, could not help developing a few more thoughts. Her gaze as she examined Liu Liang became unusually cool.

“If I did not believe you, I would not have entrusted my life and everything I own into your hands. Get up. If you do not wish to speak, then let it be. Why make up some story about not remembering?”

Liu Liang remained kneeling on the ground, his posture firm and stubborn.

Mu Yunyao frowned. Anger immediately rose in her heart.

“What? Are you no longer willing to listen even to my orders?”

Liu Liang quickly lifted his head, a hint of panic appearing in his eyes.

“Master, that is not what I mean. It is only…”

“Enough. When employing someone, do not doubt them. If you doubt them, do not employ them. You have followed me for no short amount of time. If I did not trust you, I would have driven you away long ago. I only asked casually, yet with you acting like this, it makes it seem as though you are hiding something.”

Liu Liang had never been good with words to begin with. Hearing Mu Yunyao speak like this, he became even less certain how to answer.

Looking at his wooden appearance, Mu Yunyao laughed helplessly in her heart. She had long known what sort of person he was. Why bother being angry with him?

“Get up. If you are unwilling to speak, then I will not ask. Since you have usable people under you, then help me watch Steward Qin’s movements. I imagine that in a few days, he will send people to other places to purchase fresh leaves and make tea. I need to understand some of the situation at least. I cannot completely let things go and allow them to proceed unchecked.”

Although she and Yue Wang were cooperating now, who could say whether one day in the future they might turn against each other? It was never wrong to take more precautions.

“Yes, Master.”

“Have your people be especially careful. I would rather they watch loosely than be discovered.”

“Master, please rest assured. I will certainly instruct them well.”

“Mm. You may go.”

After Liu Liang left, Mu Yunyao lifted her head. After thinking for a moment, the crease between her brows eased slightly.

For now, Liu Liang could still be considered trustworthy. She only hoped he would remain so.

Early the next morning, when Mu Yunyao went to Jinxiu Garden again, she thought of the child at the gate and specially took a detour to the main entrance.

At the gate, the child named Nan’er was indeed there. Seeing her, his face immediately showed restraint.

“Greetings, Young Miss.”

“Your elder sister is not here today. Would you like to come into the garden with me and eat some pastries?”

Seeing how thin and small he was, yet how especially clear his eyes were, Mu Yunyao felt a few traces of fondness arise.

When Nan’er heard this, his eyes lit up. After hesitating for a moment, however, he shook his head.

“Many thanks, Young Miss. But Elder Sister said that one must not accept rewards without merit. I have not helped Young Miss do anything, so I cannot eat your food.”

One must not accept rewards without merit?

This child was rather interesting.

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 127

Chapter 127: The Little Beggar at the Garden Gate

Liu Liang wrapped an arm around Mu Yunyao and carried her directly up onto the branches.

She landed lightly among the osmanthus branches, and Mu Yunyao could not help laughing aloud. After finding a branch and sitting down properly, she directly broke off a spray of osmanthus and held it in her palm. Then she turned to ask Liu Liang, who was guarding her at the side.

“Is this one prettier than the branch I picked before?”

Beneath the moonlight, her ten slender fingers were luminous and white as jade, more beautiful than that cluster of osmanthus blossoms.

Liu Liang nodded. His mind had been dazzled by the beautiful sight before him, and he became even less certain how he should answer.

Only then did Mu Yunyao feel satisfied.

“Then I will take this branch of osmanthus back and give it to Mother now. As for the one I picked before, I will simply treat it as having been thrown away to hit a dog.”

As she spoke, she was about to jump down, startling Liu Liang so badly that he hurriedly stopped her.

“Master, be careful!”

Mu Yunyao burst into laughter.

“You used to have the temperament of a block of wood. Who knows how many times people scolded you for it? I did not expect that after following me, you would actually start speaking more. I truly wonder how angry that black-hearted devil would be if he saw it.”

Liu Liang did not understand.

“Master, you are drunk.”

“I am not drunk. I am perfectly clear-headed right now…”

Mu Yunyao lifted her head and looked through the osmanthus branches toward the night sky. Beneath the moonlight, everything before her eyes was bright and clear, as though the whole world had become much cleaner.

“Evening clouds have scattered, leaving clear cold overflowing;
The Silver River turns its jade plate in silence.
This life, this night, cannot long remain so fine.
Next year, where shall we gaze upon this moon?”

By next year’s Mid-Autumn, she should already have returned to the Su family. Even if she encountered such a beautiful moonlit night and such scenery again, she was afraid she would no longer have the mood to appreciate it.

Liu Liang looked at Mu Yunyao. He only felt that there was an intense emotion about her at this moment. He could see it, yet he could not understand it.

“Master, if you like the scenery here, you may still come admire it next year.”

Mu Yunyao gave a soft laugh. The emotions around her withdrew completely.

“I heard there is a kind of cinnabar osmanthus. When it blooms, the flowers are red, charming as blood, terribly beautiful. Tomorrow, have this golden osmanthus tree cut down and replace it with cinnabar osmanthus. If there is a chance next year, I want to see red osmanthus flowers…”

Next year, when she returned to the Su family, it would be the beginning of her revenge. On a Mid-Autumn reunion night, admiring blood-colored osmanthus flowers would suit the occasion perfectly.

“Yes, Master.”

When the night wind blew, the effects of the wine grew even stronger. Mu Yunyao only felt increasingly dazed. In her hazy memory, Liu Liang helped her down from the tree and sent her back to her own room.

When she woke again, the sky was already bright. She had only just sat up when Jin Lan, hearing movement, knocked on the door and asked, “Miss, are you awake? This servant will come in?”

“Come in.”

Osmanthus wine was light, but this body had never drunk wine before, so after only a few cups, she had become thoroughly drunk. Now that she had slept through the night, the smell of wine had completely faded, and she did not feel uncomfortable.

“Miss, you are finally awake. Shopkeeper Qin has already come to ask for you twice. He said he wishes to invite over the piece of calligraphy His Majesty bestowed, have someone copy it, and make it into a signboard to hang up. This servant replied that you were still asleep, so he did not let anyone disturb you.”

“Mm. After I finish washing and dressing, I will go take a look.”

After Mu Yunyao dressed, she walked around the screen and came out. She immediately saw the vase placed on the table.

Inside a jade hu spring vase was a branch of osmanthus. Its leaves were emerald green, and its blossoms were bright and flourishing. It suited the vase extremely well.

Jin Lan noticed her gaze and quickly said, “It was Liu Liang who asked me to find a vase. He said Miss liked osmanthus flowers, so this servant took the liberty of placing it here.”

Mu Yunyao stepped forward and examined it carefully for a long while. Then she smiled slightly.

“I do indeed like it very much. Later, carry it to Mother’s room.”

“Yes, Miss.”

After washing up and eating a little, Mu Yunyao finally went to Jinxiu Garden.

With the calligraphy bestowed by His Majesty, Buxian Tower’s business had become even more explosive. As soon as it opened today, the garden was already filled with guests.

Now that things had stabilized during this period, they no longer sent invitation cards outward. Anyone who wished to come to the garden for tea needed to reserve a place in advance. Moreover, after the time was reserved, if the guest did not arrive within half an hour, the seat would be given to someone else.

These days, outside Jinxiu Garden, there were always a few children of eight or nine waiting. Once they discovered that someone had not arrived, they would run nearby to find people dressed in fine clothes and ask whether they wished to come to Jinxiu Garden. If someone gained the seat through them, they would more or less give the children a few wen as a reward. If the children encountered someone generous, they would have enough food money for an entire month.

When Mu Yunyao arrived, a child happened to walk in front of her. Seeing her heading into Jinxiu Garden, he could not help running up and remind her in a small voice.

“This young miss, no one is late today. The guests in the garden are all seated for now. Even if you go inside, there will be no place.”

Mu Yunyao could not help but stop to examine the child before her.

He looked only seven or eight years old. The clothes he wore were patched, but they had been washed especially clean. Now, seeing her stop, he involuntarily retreated two steps, timidity showing on his face.

“Thank you. I am going inside to look for someone, so it should not be a problem.”

“So you are looking for someone. Then I have delayed Young Miss’s time…”

As the child spoke, his face suddenly reddened. He pursed his lips slightly, and a tiny dimple appeared on one cheek, looking especially adorable.

Mu Yunyao found herself somewhat interested.

“Do you wait at the garden gate every day?”

The child had not expected Mu Yunyao to ask him a question. A little unease appeared on his face.

“I… I only wait at the gate. I do not beg from the guests inside the garden. I would not dare disturb them…”

“Beg?”

Jin Lan stepped forward and explained to Mu Yunyao, “Miss, these days, some little beggars have gathered at the garden gate. They help run errands, watching to see whether any guests who reserved seats fail to arrive. If there are any, they send the news out. Whoever obtains the seat will give them some reward money.”

The child nodded and looked at Mu Yunyao somewhat nervously.

The young miss before him did not look very old, but she was the most beautiful person he had ever seen. Standing before her and speaking somehow made him feel ashamed of his own inferiority.

“That is indeed a good little business. I wonder who told you to come here?”

“It was our elder sister.”

The child did not dare hide anything and answered Mu Yunyao truthfully.

As they were speaking, a young girl ran over. In a fluster, she hurriedly bowed to Mu Yunyao.

“Greetings, Young Miss. My younger brother is still young and ignorant. If he has offended you in any way, please forgive him. Nan’er, quickly apologize to this young miss.”

“Sister, I…”

The child called Nan’er quickly lowered his head and twisted the front of his clothes.

“I… I am sorry…”

Mu Yunyao smiled and shook her head.

“Young lady, you have misunderstood. Your younger brother is very well-behaved. He only reminded me of something and did not offend me at all. May I ask if you have time? I reserved a seat in the garden. I can invite you and your younger brother to eat something and drink a cup of tea.”

A few traces of guardedness immediately appeared on the young girl’s face.

“There is no need. As long as we did not offend Young Miss, then we…”

“Sister… I am hungry…”

Hearing the mention of food, the child beside her filled his eyes with longing and tugged softly at the young girl’s clothes.

“Be quiet. We are leaving…”

After saying this, the young girl bowed to Mu Yunyao, pulled the little boy, and turned to leave.

Mu Yunyao smiled and did not mind. She brought Jin Lan with her and walked into the garden.

* The Mid-Autumn Festival Tune by Su Shi. The poem echoes the night’s fleeting beauty and Mu Yunyao’s awareness that next year will be very different.

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 126

Chapter 126: Drunk on Osmanthus Wine

After Mu Yunyao changed her clothes, she had only just walked into the front courtyard when Jin Lan and Jin Qiao pulled her over to Su Qing’s side.

“Miss, everything is ready. We were only waiting for you to take your seat.”

Su Qing had been arranged in the seat of honor. Although her expression showed a little restraint, she was still able to steady herself. During this period, under the influence of Madam Ding and Madam Jin, her temperament had changed a great deal. At the very least, she could now handle a scene like this.

“Yao’er, come sit where Mother is.”

Mu Yunyao stepped forward, held Su Qing by the shoulders, and gently pressed her back down.

“Only Mother may sit in this seat. Just sit at ease. We still need to toast you.”

Steward Qin quickly echoed her.

“Indeed. Madam has worked extremely hard during this period. This first cup of wine should properly be offered to Madam by all of us.”

“What hard work is there to speak of? I have not helped much at all.”

Su Qing’s face flushed slightly, and she was extremely embarrassed as she tried to refuse.

After half a year of careful nourishment, Su Qing had changed greatly. Now, her face was fair, and her eyes were bright with spirit. Paired with the clothes and jewelry Mu Yunyao had personally made for her, her whole bearing was dignified and refined, carrying an indescribably gentle grace.

Steward Qin looked at Su Qing and kept feeling that there was something familiar about her features, as though he had seen them on someone before. But when he tried to look more carefully, he could not recall who it was.

Mu Yunyao lifted her wine cup.

“Who says Mother has not helped? If not for your support, Niyun Pavilion could never have opened. Your contribution is great indeed.”

Jin Lan, Jin Qiao, and the others all echoed her one after another.

“Miss is right. Back when I was learning the pressing stitch and could never master it, Madam taught me again and again without the slightest impatience.”

“Yes. At that time, I kept pricking my fingers, and it was Madam who helped apply medicine for me.”

“And me…”

After spending so much time together, everyone had developed an affection for Su Qing. The words they spoke were all sincere, and for a moment, Su Qing was deeply moved.

In Su Qing’s eyes, she had only helped deal with a few trivial matters. Some of them were things even she had already forgotten, yet Jin Lan and the others remembered them clearly.

“The first cup is to Madam. May Madam be whole and fulfilled, and may all her wishes come true.”

“Wishing Madam good health and all things according to your heart.”

“Wishing Madam eternal youth and blessings as enduring as life itself.”

One blessing after another, each filled with joy, deeply touched Su Qing.

“Then let us drink this cup together. I hope that in the days to come, all of us may be whole and fulfilled, and may all our wishes come true.”

“Yes. Many thanks, Madam.”

Mu Yunyao watched from the side, her heart filled with joy.

To suit the occasion, they were drinking osmanthus wine. It was not very strong, but once it entered the stomach, it spread a warm, mellow feeling through the body.

Steward Qin rose.

“This second cup should be offered to Miss Mu. If not for Miss, none of us would have the life we have today.”

The moment these words left his mouth, they immediately drew agreement from everyone.

Mu Yunyao did not stand on ceremony either. With a smiling expression, she drank the wine down.

After a round of toasts, the courtyard was filled with endless laughter and cheerful voices.

Mu Yunyao was happy and could not help drinking two more cups. The light in her eyes immediately grew somewhat misty.

For some reason, she suddenly thought of the branch of osmanthus she had broken off and tossed into Su Qingwu’s arms. At once, she felt uncomfortable. Picking up a pot of wine, she headed toward Jinxiu Garden.

Su Qing noticed her and quickly reached out to stop her.

“Yao’er, where are you going?”

“Mother, I am going to pick osmanthus flowers for you.”

“What osmanthus flowers? Mother already had people buy them. Have you forgotten?”

As Su Qing spoke, she pulled Mu Yunyao back down to sit.

“Mother sees that your cheeks are red. Could it be that you have drunk too much?”

Mu Yunyao felt an inexplicable grievance rise in her heart.

“The osmanthus flowers I picked for Mother were taken away by someone hateful. I want to go pick another branch for you.”

“There is no need.”

Su Qing looked at Mu Yunyao, her eyes full of affection.

In another two months, Yao’er would turn fourteen. During this period, her figure had gradually begun to grow, and more than half the childishness in her appearance had faded. Her whole person was like a flower bud about to bloom, revealing a delicate beauty. Especially that face, fairer and softer than ever. Now, because of the wine, a thin layer of red had spread over it, giving the illusion that her skin might break with the slightest touch.

“Mother does not love me anymore.”

Seeing Mu Yunyao’s expression grow more and more dazed, Su Qing quickly called Jin Lan over.

“Yao’er has drunk too much. Help her back to her room to rest.”

“Yes, Madam.”

Mu Yunyao was supported back to her room, but in her heart, she was still thinking about that branch of osmanthus she had failed to pick. Her eyes moved slightly, and she said to Jin Lan, “I am going to rest. You may continue eating in the front courtyard. It is rare to have a little free time these two days, so you should also gather properly with your two younger sisters.”

“Miss, will you be all right alone?”

“Be at ease. I am only sleeping. What could happen?”

“All right. Then this servant will go to the front courtyard.”

Jin Lan poured water for her, then saw Mu Yunyao lying on the bed with her eyes closed. Only then did she slowly withdraw.

Once there was no sound left in the room, Mu Yunyao opened her eyes and sat up.

The wine had surged upward, making her thoughts slow. She thought for a while about the osmanthus flowers in Jinxiu Garden, then opened the window, stepped onto a stool, climbed up, and prepared to jump down.

“Master!”

Liu Liang’s heart jolted. He hurried forward and supported Mu Yunyao.

The window was not especially high from the ground, but Mu Yunyao was already tipsy. When she jumped down, the impact jarred her heels painfully, causing her to draw in a breath.

“Master, how are you?”

Liu Liang hated himself for following too slowly. If he had arrived even a moment earlier, he certainly would have stopped her from jumping out the window.

Mu Yunyao shook her head. She lifted a finger and softly shushed him.

“You must not let Mother find out.”

Liu Liang lowered his head and looked at the smile at the corners of Mu Yunyao’s lips. After a moment of hesitation, he carefully tested, “Master, are you drunk?”

“How could I be? I still need to go to Jinxiu Garden and pick osmanthus flowers for Mother.”

“It is late. Going over there now is too dangerous.”

Mu Yunyao would not listen. Her whole mind was fixed on the osmanthus flowers. The more he refused to let her do it, the more stubborn she became.

“If you are afraid, then wait here by yourself. I will pick the osmanthus flowers and come back.”

She pressed her lips together slightly. Because she had drunk wine, a trace of rosy color lingered on her lips, making them even more delicate and vivid than roses beneath the moon.

Liu Liang was now certain that Mu Yunyao was drunk, but he did not wish to go against her will. Seeing that everyone was in the front courtyard, he accompanied her through the wall entrance and into Jinxiu Garden.

The bright moon was like a silver plate, pouring clear radiance down upon the earth. It illuminated the scenery in the garden with perfect clarity, yet compared with the daytime, it added a few more shades of hazy beauty.

Mu Yunyao’s steps were somewhat unsteady. Afraid she might fall, Liu Liang carefully supported her arm all the way. By the time they reached the osmanthus grove, his palm was already damp with sweat.

Finally seeing the osmanthus flowers, Mu Yunyao became happy. She grabbed a branch and was about to climb up, just as she had during the day.

Liu Liang was startled and quickly stepped forward to support her.

“Master, which branch of osmanthus flowers do you want? I will pick it for you.”

Mu Yunyao tried for quite a while, but felt her arms soft and weak. She could not help furrowing her brows.

“Liu Liang, I want to go up. Can you not fly? How about you carry me up?”

Mu Yunyao lifted her head slightly. Her white-jade-like face seemed to glow faintly beneath the moonlight.

Liu Liang’s heart suddenly leapt. At that moment, he felt that no matter what order she gave, he would be willing to obey it without condition.

“…All right.”

Chapter 125: Sharing in the Honor

Seeing that Su Qingwu’s words were firm, Governor Zhang knew it would not be appropriate to urge him to stay. He quickly had someone bring over the prepared gifts.

“Lord Su has had a tiring journey coming and going. These are some simple foods for you and the Imperial Guard brothers to eat on the road.”

“Many thanks, Governor Zhang. Farewell.”

Mounting his horse, Su Qingwu tightened his grip on the reins. The fine steed beneath him shifted uneasily. He turned back to glance at Mu Yunyao, and for a single instant, waves surged within his deep eyes.

Mu Yunyao’s heart startled. She wanted to distinguish the emotions in those eyes more carefully, but Su Qingwu had already urged his horse forward, leaving behind only a handsome, elegant figure.

After galloping all the way out of Jingling City, Su Qingwu could not help tightening the reins and look back toward the city gate.

One of his attendants could not stop himself from speaking. “My lord, today is the Mid-Autumn Festival. The whole of Jingling City is filled with the fragrance of osmanthus. It is truly enchanting. Why did you not agree to Governor Zhang’s request and stay for one night before leaving?”

Their schedule was not that urgent.

“No matter how beautiful the scenery is, it cannot compare to the splendor of Xiling. You may immerse yourself in it for a moment, but can you remain here for a lifetime? Better to withdraw early, lest beautiful scenery disturb the mind…”

Su Qingwu’s expression cooled. Clear light flashed through his phoenix eyes before finally settling into complete calm.

“Let us go.”

For a while, Mu Yunyao could not understand the meaning of Su Qingwu’s final glance. In the end, she simply threw it to the back of her mind.

Judging from the current situation, the Su family had not discovered anything regarding the previous Splendid Rivers and Mountains screen. Since that was the case, there was nothing to worry about.

Governor Zhang and the Governor’s wife wished to keep her in the residence for a meal. But after Mu Yunyao said she wanted to return home to accompany Mother, they did not insist. After all, today was the Mid-Autumn Festival. Wanting to spend it with family was only human nature.

Governor Zhang specially assigned several guards to escort Mu Yunyao and the two pieces of imperial calligraphy back to Jinxiu Garden.

Steward Qin led Wei Yi, Yun Chun, and the others to wait at the entrance. Seeing Mu Yunyao invite the two pieces of calligraphy down from the carriage, they all knelt and kowtowed in thanks for His Majesty’s grace.

The surrounding commoners who had come to watch the excitement blocked the street so tightly that not even water could pass through. Now, seeing the two pieces of imperial calligraphy, their faces flushed with excitement.

Many people who often went to Buxian Tower to drink tea wore expressions of shared honor, as though the glory belonged to them as well. In their hearts, they became absolutely certain. From now on, they would never go to any other tea house again.

Niyun Pavilion and Buxian Tower were both places with signboards personally bestowed by His Majesty. Could other embroidery pavilions and tea houses compare?

In Jingling City, Mu Yunyao was the first ordinary commoner to receive His Majesty’s rewards. This honor threw the entire city into a fervor. The commoners spontaneously rushed to tell one another, as though they themselves had received the reward.

From this moment onward, Niyun Pavilion and Buxian Tower would become symbols of all Jingling City. No one would be able to shake their position.

Once the calligraphy arrived, Steward Qin took out money pouches to thank the guards who had escorted it. Then he hurriedly had the calligraphy enshrined.

Before long, people from various residences came to deliver gifts. They all used the excuse of celebrating Buxian Tower’s opening. Mu Yunyao instructed people to carefully record each family’s gifts in a register. In the future, such records would be useful for many things.

After a bout of busyness, the crowd finally dispersed only when the sky was nearing dusk. Mu Yunyao directly brought the two pieces of calligraphy back home so that Su Qing could admire them carefully.

Seeing Mu Yunyao’s somewhat casual attitude, Su Qing cried out again and again. She wanted to smack her twice, yet could not bear to be harsh. In the end, she could only glare at her twice.

“This is calligraphy bestowed by His Majesty. You must not treat it lightly. I could have gone to Jinxiu Garden to see it myself. Why did you have to bring it here?”

“What does it matter? In any case, His Majesty bestowed them upon me. I brought them here for you to see. His elderly self would not be so petty.”

Su Qing could not help glaring at her again. Only then did she look at the two pieces of calligraphy before her as though they were treasures.

“Calligraphy written by His Majesty’s imperial brush truly is different. Look at these characters. No matter how one looks at them, they carry a kind of majestic authority. Perhaps this is dragon aura.”

Mu Yunyao could not help laughing softly.

“Mother, if the characters written by His Majesty carry dragon aura, then do you think His Majesty himself grows dragon scales?”

“You naughty girl, you must not speak nonsense!”

Su Qing hurriedly pressed her palms together and bowed toward the calligraphy.

“The child is ignorant. May His Majesty not take offense. Hurry over and kowtow to admit your mistake!”

Seeing Su Qing’s serious expression, Mu Yunyao could only step forward and bow with her before the calligraphy. Under her breath, she muttered a few words.

“Your Majesty, if you are truly as wise and mighty as Mother imagines, then properly punish that Jin Wang and the Su family. They are the real rebellious officials and traitors. You even accepted my tea, so if anything happens in the future, you must favor me a little.”

Hearing her muttering, Su Qing feared she would say something even more treasonous.

“Yao’er, you must not speak recklessly. Do you understand?”

“Yes, yes. Mother, rest assured. I was not speaking recklessly. I was asking His Majesty for protection. Today, Eunuch Xu even had someone pass along a message to me, saying that the tea leaves I sent have already been accepted by His Majesty. If we return to the Su family in the future, I hope His elderly self will consider the face of my gift and bribe and help us a little more.”

Su Qing tapped her nose, torn between laughter and helplessness.

“His Majesty possesses all under Heaven. What could he possibly lack? How could he take notice of that bit of tea of yours?”

“Mother, now that is where you sound like an outsider. Although His Majesty possesses all under Heaven, there are probably very few people who are truly sincere toward him. That seat may look awe-inspiring, but in truth, every day is filled with sinister schemes and hidden calculations. Even his own sons are constantly staring at the seat beneath him. Perhaps his days may not be as comfortable as ours.”

“What nonsense.”

Su Qing quickly pushed her up.

“Stop speaking nonsense here. Go see whether Shopkeeper Qin and the others have arrived.”

“Yes.”

Mu Yunyao glanced once more at the two pieces of calligraphy, her eyes curving slightly.

To be fair, these two pieces of calligraphy were indeed very well written. They looked disciplined in structure and magnificent in force. Just by looking at the characters, an image surfaced in her mind of an elder who held the power of life and death.

His face was gentle, yet every lift of his hand and step of his foot could influence the fate of all under Heaven. His body was like a mountain, his eyes held stars, and life and death, reward and punishment were all held within his grasp.

In her previous life, she had moved between the Su family and Jin Wang’s Residence. Her status had been low, so naturally, she had never had the fortune to see His Majesty. She had only heard of his deeds and felt that he should be a wise ruler.

Now that she saw this calligraphy, she could only hope that the man resembled his writing, and that he truly was as wise and mighty as she imagined.

Steward Qin had already brought Wei Yi, Yun Chun, and the others to the Su residence. He was looking with great interest at the arrangements in the residence, yet the more he looked, the less sure he felt.

This place had been arranged with extreme refinement. Every pot of flowers and every blade of grass had been chosen with care. Thinking again of the way Jinxiu Garden looked after its renovations, Steward Qin could not help sighing inwardly.

Miss Mu and His Highness truly had very different temperaments.

His Highness’s residence was also large, but more than half of it had been turned into training grounds. Even the rooms were cold and cheerless upon entering. In the past, Steward Qin had not felt much about it. But now, compared with Miss Mu’s home, His Highness’s residence hardly seemed like a place meant for people to live.

“Steward Qin, please come sit in the hall.”

Steward Qin quickly returned to himself and said with a face full of smiles, “If there is anything we can help with, Miss, please simply give the order.”

“Everything is almost ready.”

As Mu Yunyao spoke, Jin Lan walked over.

“Miss, should the things be arranged inside the hall, or placed in the courtyard?”

“The weather is nice, so place them in the courtyard. It will be perfect for admiring the moon. What does Steward Qin think?”

“I will follow Miss’s wishes.”

“Then I will first go change clothes. Later, we still need to worship the moon together.”

Mu Yunyao returned to her room. She could still hear the laughter and cheerful voices coming from the courtyard, and the corners of her lips could not help lifting along with them.

Time truly passed quickly. Before she knew it, half a year had already gone by.

Everything had gradually entered the proper path. In another year, she would be able to return to the Su family and properly settle accounts with those people.

She only hoped that when the time came, and they met again, Su Qingwu would not be too surprised.

Chapter 124: A Gift from the Governor’s Wife

Steward Qin hesitated for a moment, then nodded slightly.

“Miss is intelligent. Fourth Master is indeed His Highness Yue Wang.”

Mu Yunyao revealed an expression of having expected exactly that. She pulled from her sleeve the dagger Yue Wang had left with her back then.

“After receiving this dagger, I examined it carefully. Along one edge, I discovered an inconspicuous pattern. To an ordinary person, it would seem like nothing, but I know that it is the character Yue.”

Steward Qin was stunned. He could not help taking the dagger from Mu Yunyao’s hand and examining it closely.

There was indeed a pattern personally carved by Yue Wang along one side of the dagger. Yue Wang liked this pattern very much and had left it on many objects. Steward Qin had naturally seen it before. It looked distinctive, but he had never discovered any particular meaning in it. Why could Mu Yunyao see the character Yue from it?

“Miss Mu, I have looked carefully, but I truly cannot see anything.”

Mu Yunyao took the dagger back.

“If it could be seen so easily, His Highness would not have carved this pattern onto the dagger.”

Since Yue Wang dared to display it, he was naturally certain ordinary people would not be able to recognize it.

Steward Qin did not continue probing.

“Miss Mu, since you have already guessed His Highness’s identity, may I ask what you intend to do?”

“What plans could I have? His Highness holds a noble status. I am merely a commoner, so naturally I must think of ways to curry favor with him and please him.”

Hearing her say this, Steward Qin felt even less at ease.

If it were someone else, perhaps they would value His Highness’s identity. But if it were Mu Yunyao, she truly might not necessarily take His Highness seriously. Look at the Ding family, then look at the Jingling Assistant Prefect and the Xuanfu envoy. They were all people ordinary folk could not afford to provoke, yet she had not feared them in the slightest and had directly pulled them down from their horses.

Mu Yunyao was in a good mood and no longer continued making things difficult for Steward Qin.

“By the way, Mother said that tomorrow is Mid-Autumn. Steward Qin has no family in Jingling City, and Wei Yi, Yun Chun, and the others are also without support. Why not all eat a meal together and make things a little lively?”

“Yes. I will follow Miss’s arrangements.”

Naturally, Steward Qin would not refuse.

Now that Mu Yunyao already knew His Highness’s identity, in the future, as Buxian Tower developed, her relationship with His Highness would only grow closer. It would be greatly beneficial to build a good relationship with Madam Su earlier. After observing this period of time, Steward Qin had already seen clearly that Mu Yunyao cared deeply about her mother.

“Then Steward Qin may continue with your work. I still need to return and help Mother make mooncakes.”

“Respectfully sending off Miss Mu.”

The moment Mu Yunyao left, Steward Qin hurriedly began writing a letter. In his heart, he secretly considered that he had to find every possible way to speed up the delivery of letters. Otherwise, one round trip would take a full month, and everything would be delayed.

For example, this time, His Highness had sent orders for him to find a way to protect Niyun Pavilion. Yet before he could do anything, Mu Yunyao had already obtained two imperially bestowed signboards for Niyun Pavilion and Buxian Tower.

Alas. Compared like this, it made him seem rather useless.

Early the next morning, Mu Yunyao rose early and dressed neatly to wait. Before long, Governor Zhang sent someone to invite her over.

When she arrived at Governor Zhang’s Residence, someone immediately welcomed her into the residence and brought her before the Governor’s wife.

“Greetings, Madam.”

“Quickly rise. There is no need for so much ceremony. I heard that Niyun Pavilion has recently been undergoing reconstruction. Previously, the Niyun Pavilion was only an ordinary embroidery pavilion. Now that it has a name personally bestowed by His Majesty, naturally, it can no longer be compared with before. Its scale should be made larger.

“As it happens, several shops nearby are under my name. I thought I would give those shops to you.”

Mu Yunyao quickly shook her head.

“Madam, this is far too valuable. I absolutely dare not accept it.”

“What is valuable or not valuable about it? On ordinary days, they do not bring in much income. The few garments you made for me helped me solve a great difficulty. I should long ago have sent you a great gift in thanks. Now that Niyun Pavilion happens to be rebuilding, I will give those shops to you as a congratulatory gift. Whether you wish to tear them down and rebuild, or use them to sell garments, you may do as you please.”

“Madam, this must not be done.”

A trace of panic and helplessness appeared on Mu Yunyao’s face.

“Being able to help Madam already makes me extremely happy. I did not do it for Madam’s thanks or gifts.”

The Governor’s wife sighed softly, though the smile on her face remained unchanged.

“Your temperament is truly just as Madam Jin described. Then I will speak plainly. You spread embroidery stitches among the people, which is a great merit of educating and benefiting the common folk. Governor Zhang and I have also benefited from that honor. These things are something you deserve without shame. Only if you accept them will we feel at ease.”

Just then, someone outside announced that Madam Jin had arrived. The Governor’s wife had no intention of avoiding the matter and directly ordered someone to invite her in.

“You have come at just the right time. Hurry and help me look at this stubborn girl.”

The Governor’s wife looked toward Madam Jin with a face full of smiles.

Madam Jin’s gaze swept over the land deeds and property deeds on the table, and she immediately understood.

“Yunyao has always had such a temperament. Madam may feel it is nothing, but she can feel uneasy over it for a long time. Yunyao, since this is a congratulatory gift from the Governor’s wife, accept it. If you truly feel uneasy in your heart, then make two more outfits for Madam.”

Mu Yunyao still felt uneasy.

“How could the clothes I make be compared with these several shopfronts?”

“The clothes you make are very valuable as well. One piece costs over a thousand taels of silver. If you make them for two years, perhaps it will be the Governor’s wife who benefits from you.”

The Governor’s wife was amused by her words and nodded repeatedly in agreement.

“Indeed. If she makes clothes for me for two more years, would I not be the one benefiting?”

Mu Yunyao could not help laughing. Knowing that it would not be appropriate to continue refusing, she nodded heavily.

“Then I will take charge of all of Madam’s clothes from now on. I guarantee that Madam will have beautiful garments to wear in every season.”

“That could not be better. I shall be waiting.”

Seeing Mu Yunyao put away the land deeds and property deeds, the smile on the Governor’s wife’s face became a little more sincere.

“It is nearly time. Let us go to the front courtyard. I imagine Yunyao can hardly wait to invite the two pieces of calligraphy back.”

Mu Yunyao smiled somewhat shyly.

“To tell Madam the truth, from the moment I received the news, my heart has been full of anticipation. I could not sleep at all last night and have been waiting only for today.”

“Hehe, silly girl. From now on, you will be able to look at His Majesty’s calligraphy every day before you sleep.”

Mu Yunyao’s cheeks suddenly reddened, drawing another round of laughter from the Governor’s wife and Madam Jin.

It was much like the previous occasion when they had received His Majesty’s rewards. After the incense altar was set up and everyone knelt to give thanks, Su Qingwu placed the two pieces of calligraphy into Mu Yunyao’s hands.

“This common girl thanks His Majesty for his sacred grace.”

Mu Yunyao rose and handed the two pieces of calligraphy to the guards Governor Zhang had assigned to escort them. Then she curtsied to Su Qingwu.

“Many thanks, Lord Su.”

Su Qingwu nodded slightly. His expression was much colder than before.

“Miss Mu, Eunuch Xu asked me to bring you a message. He said the tea leaves you sent have already been presented before His Majesty.”

Mu Yunyao was unable to contain her joy.

“I truly never expected that I would have such fortune…”

“The message has been delivered, and His Majesty’s calligraphy has also been handed over. Governor Zhang, Lord Cao, I must now hurry back to the Capital to report on my mission.”

Governor Zhang was somewhat surprised.

“Lord Su, today is the Mid-Autumn Festival. Why not rest for a day at my residence and return to the Capital afterward? It would not be too late.”

“Many thanks for Governor Zhang’s kindness. After returning to the Capital, there are still many matters to attend to. It would not be good to delay further. Farewell.”

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 123

Chapter 123: Pressing for Yue Wang’s True Identity

Jin Lan and Jin Qiao naturally recognized Su Qingwu as well. After a brief moment of panic, they hurried forward to pay their respects, then quickly helped Mu Yunyao down from the osmanthus tree.

Mu Yunyao straightened her skirt. A trace of just the right amount of confusion appeared on her face.

“Greetings, Lord Su. Did you not already return to the Capital? Why have you suddenly appeared in Jinxiu Garden?”

“Miss Mu need not be so courteous. This time, I came to escort the two pieces of calligraphy His Majesty has bestowed upon you.”

Hearing this, Mu Yunyao was overjoyed. The delight in her clear eyes seemed almost about to overflow.

“His Majesty truly bestowed calligraphy upon me? That is wonderful! Lord Su, did you just say two pieces?”

“Yes. Niyun Pavilion and Buxian Tower. Should Miss Mu not have guessed this long ago?”

Su Qingwu studied Mu Yunyao closely. Thinking of all the methods she had used before, the emotions in his heart churned. He treated her so differently. Had that, too, been part of her calculations?

Mu Yunyao ignored the cold mockery in his words. Her smile remained brilliant.

“How would I dare casually speculate on His Majesty’s sacred intentions? Could Lord Su have guessed it in advance?”

“How could I?”

Speculating on His Majesty’s intentions was a grave offense. Naturally, he would not admit to such a thing.

“Then is that not exactly so? Lord Su is someone His Majesty values, yet even you could not think of it. How could I possibly have thought of it?”

Mu Yunyao was in an excellent mood at present, so she lazily tossed this reply back at Su Qingwu. Seeing that he did not speak, she also lost interest in continuing to mock him.

“May I ask where His Majesty’s bestowed calligraphy is now? Do I need to set up an incense altar and receive it immediately?”

“The Imperial Guards have already escorted the calligraphy to Governor Zhang’s Residence. It is already late today. I imagine Governor Zhang will send someone to inform you tomorrow.”

Mu Yunyao’s smile grew even brighter.

“Tomorrow just happens to be the fifteenth day of the eighth month, the Mid-Autumn Festival. This can truly be called double happiness. Jin Lan, Jin Qiao, the two of you help me pick osmanthus flowers and send them to Mother. I must go find Shopkeeper Qin and discuss with him how we should celebrate tomorrow.

“This osmanthus grove has not yet been opened to guests. If Lord Su wishes to drink tea, please go elsewhere. Do you need me to call a tea attendant to receive you?”

“There is no need. I should also leave.”

“Respectfully sending off Lord Su.”

Seeing Su Qingwu leave directly after speaking, Mu Yunyao returned with a heart full of joy to share the news with Mother.

After leaving Jinxiu Garden, Su Qingwu’s attendant quickly followed.

“My lord, Governor Zhang knows you have arrived and specially sent someone to invite you to attend a banquet.”

“Decline it for me. Say that I am weary from the long journey and feel unwell. We will speak of it tomorrow.”

Su Qingwu’s voice was low.

“Yes, my lord.”

Su Qingwu was about to mount his horse when he suddenly discovered that he was still holding that branch of osmanthus.

The leaves were vivid green, and the flowers were abundant. The small pale-yellow blossoms crowded together in clusters, looking especially endearing.

“My lord?”

Seeing Su Qingwu freeze, the attendant could not help reminding him.

Su Qingwu’s brows moved slightly. He looked deeply at the osmanthus branch, then casually threw it to the ground. After that, he mounted his horse and left as swiftly as wind and lightning.

Although Su Qingwu’s arrival had made Mu Yunyao somewhat unhappy, the thought of the two imperially bestowed signboards immediately pushed that small displeasure to the back of her mind.

“Mother, our signboards have arrived.”

“Signboards? You mean His Majesty’s bestowed calligraphy has arrived?”

Su Qing was overjoyed.

“Yes. Niyun Pavilion and Buxian Tower both have one. Tomorrow, we can retrieve them from Governor Zhang’s Residence.”

Su Qing’s face was full of smiles. In her excitement, she could not stop pacing back and forth in the room.

“That is wonderful. Truly wonderful! Tomorrow happens to be Mid-Autumn as well. We must celebrate properly.”

“Mm. Right, I also need to tell Shopkeeper Qin this good news. He has been looking forward to it for a long time too.”

“Good, hurry and go. Shopkeeper Qin is alone and has no family here in Jingling City. And those children at Buxian Tower have truly worked hard during this period. Tomorrow, why not celebrate together?”

As Su Qing spoke, she became somewhat nervous, afraid that the suggestion she had made was too sudden or troublesome. The more she spoke, the softer her voice became.

Mu Yunyao, however, supported it wholeheartedly.

“Mother is still the most thoughtful. These days, I have been so busy that I nearly forgot Mid-Autumn altogether. Fortunately, Mother reminded me. Then let Si Qin and the others help you prepare. Tomorrow, Buxian Tower will close early, and we will all eat a reunion meal together.”

“Good. Then Mother will go prepare.”

Seeing her suggestion affirmed, Su Qing was extremely happy. She quickly called Si Qin and the others to go make preparations. Food for so many people would take quite some effort.

When Steward Qin heard Mu Yunyao speak of the calligraphy, he smiled so widely that his teeth showed.

“This is truly wonderful!”

With this golden signboard, who would still dare investigate Buxian Tower? As long as they managed things well, His Highness could use Buxian Tower to spread his eyes and ears throughout Jiangnan. Soon, he would be able to complete the great plan in his heart and return to the Capital as early as possible.

“I will write to Fourth Master right now and tell him. He will certainly be extremely pleased.”

“Fourth Master is far away. I fear it will take a long time for the letter to be delivered?”

Mu Yunyao asked as though unintentionally.

“Yes. To send it to Yuexi will take half a month.”

After Steward Qin finished speaking, his whole body abruptly froze in place.

“Ahem… Master has gone to Yuexi during this period to discuss some business, so the letter must be sent there…”

Only, the more he explained, the more it carried the taste of trying to cover things up.

Mu Yunyao looked at Steward Qin and smiled without speaking.

“Yuexi is a bitterly cold border region. The terrain is high, and mountains stretch everywhere. On some mountains, the snow does not melt all year round. Even grass finds it extremely difficult to grow there. I wonder what sort of business there is to do?”

“As for Master’s matters, I am not very clear either…”

“Steward Qin, now that Buxian Tower has a golden signboard bestowed by His Majesty, it will only grow larger and better in the future. But if I do not know Fourth Master’s true identity, it will be difficult to avoid doing things that do not accord with his intentions. If this continues for long, it will truly be unfavorable to Buxian Tower’s development.”

“Miss is not unaware, is she? Fourth Master is from Xiling in the Capital. His ancestors held office, and he also controls quite a few businesses…”

“But I asked Lord Su, and he said there is no Ning family in the Capital whose business is particularly large.”

“Su… Su Qingwu? He serves as an official in court. He may not know everything about the situation in Xiling…”

“It just so happens that the one escorting His Majesty’s calligraphy to Jingling City this time is also him. If Steward Qin does not tell me the truth, then I will draw a portrait and entrust Lord Su to investigate it for me.”

“No. Absolutely not!”

Some time ago, His Highness had returned to the Capital to celebrate His Majesty’s birthday. Su Qingwu had seen him before. If Mu Yunyao brought a portrait to ask him, things would become disastrous.

“Since Steward Qin will not let me investigate, then you should tell me yourself.”

Looking at Mu Yunyao’s certain expression, Steward Qin smiled somewhat helplessly.

“Miss is intelligent. I imagine you have already guessed something?”

Since Mu Yunyao had decided to expose Yue Wang’s identity, she did not plan to keep circling around the matter. Hearing Steward Qin ask this, she nodded.

“Fourth Master has extraordinary bearing. He also uses Ning as his surname and ranks fourth. Added to that, you just said he is in Yuexi. I made a bold guess. Could Fourth Master be His Highness Yue Wang?”

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 122

Chapter 122: Beneath the Osmanthus, Su Qingwu Appears

Mu Yunyao gathered her thoughts and continued walking forward.

Yet at the corner of the street, a young nobleman stepped out. His figure was somewhat plump, and several attendants followed behind him. One of them was even missing a finger.

It was none other than Tan Bawang, the young master of Caiyue Pavilion, whom Mu Yunyao had once beaten thoroughly with an oil-paper umbrella.

At this moment, he stared at Mu Yunyao’s retreating figure, his face full of savage anger.

“What a fine little wretch. I have finally found you. You even tricked me, saying you were the cousin miss of the Tan family from Chunxiu Embroidery Shop. This young master searched through more than half the Capital and still could not find you. Who would have thought I would run into you here? Go. Investigate her properly. Find out exactly who that wretched girl is.”

“Yes, Young Master.”

Having remembered the matters of the past, Mu Yunyao no longer had any mood to continue strolling through the streets. She simply returned home.

Seeing her return so quickly, Su Qing could not help feeling a little strange.

“Did you not say yourself that you wanted to have a proper stroll today? Why have you come back after such a short while?”

Mu Yunyao clung to Su Qing’s side.

“Was it not because, after going out, I began missing Mother again? So I came back.”

“You girl. Did you eat osmanthus honey today?”

“Now that Mother says so, I am craving it. I want to eat the eight-treasure rice Mother makes.”

“I really do not know why you like eight-treasure rice so much. I will not make it today. Tomorrow is Mid-Autumn. Mother will make some osmanthus cakes and mooncakes, which can at least suit the occasion.”

Su Qing stroked Mu Yunyao’s hair and spoke as though coaxing a child.

“How about I make eight-treasure rice for you in a couple of days?”

Mu Yunyao rubbed against Su Qing’s arm and nodded obediently.

“All right. If Mother wants to make osmanthus cakes, have the osmanthus flowers already been picked?”

“I heard Si Qin say that at this time of year, osmanthus flowers are sold everywhere on the streets. Mother was planning to have her buy some.”

There were only the two of them, mother and daughter. They would not need much osmanthus. A few wen would be enough to buy what they needed.

Mu Yunyao’s eyes, however, lit up.

“There is no need to buy any. I will personally go pick some for Mother. At the westernmost side of Jinxiu Garden, there is an osmanthus grove. At the time, I felt the osmanthus had not yet reached full bloom, so I did not open it to guests. Now it just happens to benefit me. I will first pluck the best osmanthus flowers and bring them back for Mother to make osmanthus cakes.”

“No. Those osmanthus flowers should be left for the guests to admire. I will simply buy some.”

Mu Yunyao, however, would not listen.

“The best osmanthus flowers naturally must be given to Mother. Wait for me. I will go right now.”

After saying this, she directly lifted her skirts and ran out, leaving Su Qing not knowing whether to laugh or cry. Su Qing hurriedly instructed Jin Lan and Jin Qiao.

“Quickly follow her and protect her. You must not let Miss injure herself.”

“Yes. Madam, rest assured.”

For Mu Yunyao’s convenience in coming and going, Steward Qin had ordered a hidden door opened in the courtyard wall, so that she did not need to take the long way around through the main entrance and could enter Jinxiu Garden directly.

Mu Yunyao deliberately avoided the crowds and chose the smaller paths, making her way all the way to the outside of the osmanthus grove.

Before she had even entered the courtyard, she could already smell waves of osmanthus fragrance, fresh enough to seep into the heart. When she lifted her head slightly, she saw osmanthus branches reaching over the garden wall. Clusters of blossoms hid among the green leaves, looking even fresher and more lovely.

Mu Yunyao could not help reaching out to touch them gently.

Not far away, Su Qingwu stood by the water’s edge, light shifting within his eyes.

By all rights, he had only just returned from Jingling City to the Capital to report on his mission. This time, escorting His Majesty’s calligraphy could have been done by someone else.

Yet after hearing Xu Li speak, he had subconsciously agreed at once, without giving the matter the slightest thought, even though Mid-Autumn was near.

On the road here, a restless irritation had flashed through his heart from time to time. Yet when he tried to distinguish it carefully, he could not grasp it.

The guards below had already escorted His Majesty’s calligraphy to Governor Zhang’s Residence. He, however, had quietly come to Jinxiu Garden and slowly walked to the side of the winding nine-turn corridor bridge.

Standing on the bridge, he looked over the lotus flowers filling the lake. Yet what returned to his mind was Mu Yunyao’s appearance that day, one hand resting on the railing, a faint smile on her face.

With his thoughts complicated, he deliberately avoided the crowds and came to the water’s edge. Unexpectedly, just as he rounded a cluster of reeds, he saw Mu Yunyao across the way, smiling as she touched the osmanthus flowers.

She wore a flower-scattered gauze robe with a pale apricot skirt. Silver-white magnolias were embroidered along the hem. From a distance, she looked fresh and pleasing to the eye.

At this moment, one hand held up her skirt while the other reached up to touch the osmanthus blossoms leaning over the wall. The smile on her lips was sweet, more captivating than the clustered osmanthus flowers.

Su Qingwu only felt his heart settle in an instant.

The restlessness that had accompanied him all the way here vanished without a trace. He furrowed his brows, and his mood became even worse than before.

Mu Yunyao knew nothing of Su Qingwu’s arrival at Jinxiu Garden. After touching that cluster of osmanthus flowers, the smile in her eyes deepened.

Jin Lan and Jin Qiao caught up, carrying baskets.

“Miss, please watch from below. This servant will help you pick the osmanthus flowers.”

Mu Yunyao had rarely given rise to such playful thoughts. Carrying the basket, she walked beneath an osmanthus tree.

“In the past, my body was weak, and Mother was always worried about me. She would not permit this or that. But Father was especially indulgent with me. He took me to the riverbank to catch fish and play in the water. He even accompanied me in climbing trees to steal bird eggs…”

Everything that other children could do, Father had taken her to do as well. He had not allowed her to suffer the slightest regret just because her body was weak.

Because of Li Shi, Mu Yunyao had once held some resentment in her heart toward her father. Later, Mother had given up her life for her, and that fierce, overwhelming love had covered over her longing for Father.

Now that she thought about it, Father’s sincere love for her had not been any less than Mother’s.

Jin Lan and Jin Qiao did not dare respond, afraid that speaking would make Mu Yunyao even sadder.

Mu Yunyao, however, smiled softly and pressed down the ache in her heart. She lifted her head and looked at the osmanthus tree, which was not especially tall. Then she raised her skirt, gripped a branch, and climbed up.

“Miss!”

Jin Lan and Jin Qiao had not expected her movements to be so nimble. They hurriedly cried out and reached their hands below her, afraid she might accidentally fall from the tree.

“Miss, be careful. You must be careful!”

This osmanthus tree had grown for many years and had also been carefully pruned. Its branches were thick and sturdy. Supporting her weight alone was no problem at all.

Mu Yunyao chose a place and sat down, letting her legs hang and swing slightly. Seeing the nervous expressions on Jin Lan and Jin Qiao’s faces, she could not help laughing happily.

After laughing, she lifted her head by chance and was immediately captivated by the osmanthus blossoms covering the tree.

Sunlight spilled down. Cluster after cluster of golden osmanthus glimmered faintly. When the wind blew, the flower clusters moved lightly with the breeze, scattering the tree’s brilliance into shimmering fragments.

Mu Yunyao’s eyes curved slightly. She admired the sight for quite a while before returning to herself.

She raised her hand and broke off a branch of osmanthus, then smiled.

“Jade pearls fall, scattered beneath the moon’s wheel. Before the palace, they are gathered fresh with dew. To this day, I do not understand the affairs of the heavens. Perhaps Chang’e cast them down to humankind. I shall also imitate Chang’e in the moon and give you each a branch of osmanthus. How about it?”

Su Qingwu had wanted to turn and leave when he saw Mu Yunyao enter the osmanthus grove. Yet after he had taken only a few steps, he heard Jin Lan and Jin Qiao’s startled cries. Worry rose in his heart, and he was afraid something had happened to her, so he quickly went around the stream and entered the garden.

Unexpectedly, just as he arrived beneath the tree, he heard Mu Yunyao’s words.

He had only just lifted his head when a branch of osmanthus, casually tossed down by her, fell straight into his arms.

Su Qingwu!

Why was he here?

Mu Yunyao had originally intended to break off a branch of osmanthus and give it to Jin Lan and Jin Qiao. She had not expected her hand to slip, causing the branch to fall from her grasp.

She hurriedly lowered her head, only to meet Su Qingwu’s pair of phoenix eyes. Her heart could not help trembling fiercely. She instinctively tightened her grip on the branch, only then keeping herself from slipping down from the tree.

Su Qingwu held the osmanthus branch and lifted his head.

Mu Yunyao sat upon the osmanthus tree. Behind her, brilliant sunlight scattered down in fine fragments. A breeze blew over, and golden osmanthus petals drifted down, brushing past her hair and skirt.

In that instant, his eyes were dazzled, and his heart fell into disorder.

Standing beneath the osmanthus tree, Su Qingwu clearly heard his own heartbeat for the first time.

Swift.

Powerful.

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 121

Chapter 121: A Heart Ill at Ease

Mu Yunyao wore a smile on her face, but the words she spoke were direct and to the point.

“I presume you are the owner of Ruyi Pavilion?”

“Precisely.”

“Since you have brought up the law, this matter becomes much easier to handle. Jin Lan, bring out the contract Ding Yuelan signed with Niyun Pavilion back then and let her have a look.”

Mu Yunyao had no intention of wasting words.

“What contract?”

When the madam of Ruyi Pavilion saw the thing in Jin Lan’s hands, her expression immediately worsened. Her eyes darted, and then she sat down on the ground and began to wail.

“Heavens above, are you trying to drive me to my death? Back then, buying Ding Yuelan cost me ten thousand taels of silver! Now she has been snatched away by force. How am I supposed to live? I might as well knock my head against this place and die…”

Mu Yunyao had not expected that the woman who had just been speaking reason sentence by sentence would suddenly begin playing the rogue. Her brows immediately furrowed.

The madam of Ruyi Pavilion was full of regret.

Had she known earlier that Ding Yuelan had also signed a contract with Niyun Pavilion, then last night she would certainly have accepted the ten thousand taels cleanly and without hesitation. It was all because she had listened to Master Ding and Old Madam Ding’s instigation and wanted to extort a heavy sum from Mu Yunyao.

Many people who had been waiting at the entrance of Jinxiu Garden, preparing to go to Buxian Tower for tea, now gathered around. When they heard Ding Yuelan’s name mentioned, their interest grew even stronger.

The matter of the Ding family had long since become a topic of conversation for the people of Jingling City after meals and over tea. Even now, they were still discussing it endlessly. They had thought the Ding family had already left Jingling City, yet unexpectedly, Ding Yuelan had been sold to Ruyi Pavilion.

Ruyi Pavilion was a brothel. For the dignified wife of the Xuanfu envoy to suddenly fall into the dust of the pleasure quarters, once this news spread, would it not shake the whole of Jingling City?

Hearing the many murmurs around them, Mu Yunyao’s expression cooled.

“How much silver you spent to buy Ding Yuelan has nothing to do with me. The agreed time on the contract has not yet expired, so she is still the shopkeeper of Niyun Pavilion. If you continue to entangle this matter, then do not blame me for confronting you in court.”

She had the contract in hand, and it had been signed before the life-sale contract with Ruyi Pavilion. No matter how one looked at it, reason stood on her side.

“Miss Mu, a single garment you make costs thousands of taels at every turn. Naturally, you do not understand the suffering of lowly people like us. Who knows how many guests our girls must accompany before we can earn back ten thousand taels? I bought Ding Yuelan because I intended to make her the main pillar of my Ruyi Pavilion. You have taken her away by force, and now half of Ruyi Pavilion has collapsed.

“Besides, letting a woman who came out of a brothel become the shopkeeper of Niyun Pavilion, who will still dare come to learn embroidery stitches in the future…”

“Presumptuous!”

A sharp rebuke suddenly rang out, cutting off the madam of Ruyi Pavilion’s words.

The crowd abruptly parted. Madam Jin walked over slowly, her hand resting on Yin Hong’s.

When the madam of Ruyi Pavilion saw Madam Jin, her expression changed at once, and she quickly lowered her head.

Mu Yunyao stepped forward and supported Madam Jin, secretly signaling that she did not need to be angry.

Madam Jin quietly squeezed her hand. There was still a trace of a smile in her eyes. Yet when she looked toward the madam of Ruyi Pavilion, her expression had already turned completely cold.

“Ding Yuelan signed a contract with Niyun Pavilion first. Then she is the shopkeeper of Niyun Pavilion. If you feel distressed over the silver you spent, then go find the person who sold Ding Yuelan to you and demand it back. If you dare continue making trouble here and slandering Niyun Pavilion’s reputation, then do not blame this madam for being impolite.”

Setting aside the fact that she held the title of Imperial Mandate Lady, Cao Yunnian’s position alone made it as easy as turning over a hand to shut down a single Ruyi Pavilion.

“Yes. I know I was wrong. I will never dare cause trouble again. Madam, please forgive me.”

“Leave at once.”

“Yes, yes. Many thanks for Madam’s magnanimity.”

The madam of Ruyi Pavilion quickly led her people away.

Mu Yunyao looked at her hurriedly retreating back, but the crease between her brows did not ease.

Seeing her expression, Madam Jin thought she was still bothered by what had just happened and spoke to comfort her.

“There is no need to mind her words. At most, there will be some rumors for a short while. They will not cause too much damage to Niyun Pavilion.”

“Mm. I understand. Madam’s complexion looks much better today.”

Mu Yunyao naturally understood this reasoning. It was only that she felt this matter might not be so simple. The scene the madam of Ruyi Pavilion had caused just now felt neither painful nor harmful, more like a farce.

After Su Qing accompanied Madam Jin into the garden for a walk, Mu Yunyao called Liu Liang over.

“Today, the people from Ruyi Pavilion came here. For some reason, I feel uneasy. Go investigate Master Ding and Old Madam Ding. See where they are and whether they have had contact with anyone.”

“Yes, Master.”

Jin Lan brought in a cup of tea. Seeing Mu Yunyao’s brows lightly furrowed, she asked cautiously, “Miss, do you think there is something wrong here?”

Mu Yunyao nodded slightly.

“The madam of Ruyi Pavilion is not a fool. Even if Madam Ding is beautiful, she would not spend ten thousand taels to buy her. Moreover, after discovering that we held Madam Ding’s signed contract, her attitude changed far too suddenly. And after seeing Madam Jin, she was so frightened she did not dare refute a single word and turned to leave at once. No matter how I look at it, it seems as though she was testing me.”

“Testing?”

“Let Liu Liang investigate first.”

Whether it was the Niyun Pavilion or Buxian Tower, there were quite a few people secretly jealous and envious of them. Who knew whether someone would be unable to restrain themselves and make a move?

Moreover, back then, because of the dispute over embroiderers, she had secretly acted and caused Caiyue Pavilion to be shut down. After so much time had passed, the people of Caiyue Pavilion might have found out she was involved. Being more careful and guarded would never be a bad thing.

Liu Liang went to investigate, but after two days of searching, he still found no leads.

Mu Yunyao was not overly anxious. There was no reason to spend a thousand days guarding against thieves. If there truly was someone behind Ruyi Pavilion giving orders, they would certainly make another move. She only needed to respond carefully.

These days, while keeping an eye on Niyun Pavilion and watching over Buxian Tower, Mu Yunyao rarely found a little leisure amid her busyness. She brought Jin Lan and Jin Qiao to stroll through the streets.

Once they reached the street, she discovered that everywhere was filled with a festive air. Quite a few stalls selling rabbit lanterns and mooncakes had suddenly appeared.

Mu Yunyao thought for a moment, then suddenly came to herself.

“Tomorrow is Mid-Autumn, is it not?”

“Yes, Miss. These past two days, you never mentioned it. This servant thought Miss did not like celebrating Mid-Autumn.”

“Mid-Autumn is for reunion. How could I not like it?”

It was only that this year’s Mid-Autumn had only her and Mother.

Back in Xiayan Village, every Mid-Autumn, Father would take her to Yancheng to attend the large market fair. At that time, many children would carry rabbit lanterns in their hands, but no one’s lantern was as beautiful as hers.

That was because Father had pasted hers together with his own hands.

It had long ears, a plump body, and red eyes. When she carried the lantern and walked, its few whiskers trembled lightly. Who knew how many children had looked at it with envy in their hearts?

“Miss, do you like rabbit lanterns? Shall this servant go buy one for you?”

Seeing Mu Yunyao staring at the rabbit lanterns in a daze, Jin Lan could not help asking.

Mu Yunyao shook her head.

“There is no need. Looking at them is enough. Let us go.”

In her heart, she was no longer a thirteen-year-old child. Even if she carried another rabbit lantern now, she could not find again the pure, carefree feeling of the past.

Besides, the most beautiful lantern had already been imprinted in her mind. Looking again at the ones sold on the stalls, she felt they were nothing more than ordinary.

“Mm.”

Jin Lan secretly glanced at Mu Yunyao and felt that there was an indescribable emotion about her. It seemed like melancholy, yet also like remembrance, so complicated that one could not distinguish it clearly.
