Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 112

Chapter 112: The Tea House—Buxian Tower

“Many thanks, Your Excellency. I have tea gardens under my hand, and the tea house I established will also open tomorrow. I will certainly manage it with care and spread the name of Buxian Tower far and wide. Perhaps, after a few years, when my tea house has grown large enough, I may even open one in the capital. At that time, I will be able to kneel outside the imperial palace and thank His Majesty for his grace.”

Su Qingwu had been studying Mu Yunyao all along, the light in his eyes shifting subtly. “Buxian Tower? A tea house called Buxian Tower—does this name have some particular meaning?”

“I opened the tea house within a garden, and inside that garden stands a six-story tower. I wish to make this place one where those who truly understand tea and love tea may gather and exchange thoughts. The Tea Sage once said: ‘I envy not golden wine vessels, nor cups of white jade. I envy not entering the Secretariat at dawn, nor ascending the Terrace at dusk. A thousand envies, ten thousand envies, all for the waters of the western river, once flowing down beneath Jingling City.’ Therefore, this tower is called Buxian Tower. Tea tasting inside will not require any silver.

Eunuch Xu nodded slightly. Mu Yunyao’s words had stirred his interest—not because he believed her tea could be especially fine, for he had even been rewarded with tribute tea from the palace before, but mainly because he, too, was a lover of tea. Moreover, the Buxian Tower she described sounded far too beautiful; it was difficult not to wish to visit it.

“Buxian Tower is indeed a good name. The name alone makes it worth seeing. Just now, I heard Miss say that your tea house opens tomorrow. Might we also go and sit for a while?”

“If Your Excellencies are willing to go, Buxian Tower will naturally be honored by your presence. I will personally brew tea to receive you.” Mu Yunyao’s face lit with joy, so bright that it made those who saw her feel at ease.

“Good. Then it is settled.”

“Yes. Tomorrow morning at the hour of si, I will respectfully await Your Excellencies’ arrival!”

Mu Yunyao left the front hall in high spirits and returned to the rear courtyard, where she curtsied to Madam Jin in thanks. “Many thanks to Madam for reminding me in advance.”

Seeing her appearance, Madam Jin knew everything had gone smoothly and could not help feeling pleased for her. “It is good that everything went smoothly.” If Mu Yunyao’s Niyun Pavilion could obtain imperial calligraphy personally bestowed by His Majesty, it would be equivalent to a golden signboard. As long as the Niyun Pavilion did not fall, this merit of educating the people would continue to be praised, and in the end, she and Cao Yunnian would also benefit.

“Madam, tomorrow at the hour of si, my tea house will open. I ask Madam to honor us with your presence.”

“After waiting for so long, it is finally opening. Naturally, I must go and lend support. When the time comes, I will also taste your tea-brewing skill. Only, the injury on your hand…”

“It does not matter. It has already scabbed over and mostly healed.” Heaven was helping her to such an extent; even if her hand was broken, she would still endure it!

“That is good.”

After leaving the Cao Residence, Mu Yunyao went directly to Jinxiu Garden. Seeing her come in such haste, Steward Qin thought something had happened. After listening to her explanation, he froze for a moment in stunned silence. “Miss is saying that a eunuch wishes to come here to drink tea?”

“Yes. I saw that the lord’s face was fair and beardless, his voice somewhat sharp, and the aura around him especially distinct. Thinking carefully, he should be an inner-court eunuch from the capital.”

Mu Yunyao knew Steward Qin was Yue Wang’s man. She was afraid that his identity might be recognized by that eunuch, so she had come in advance to warn him. If it was inconvenient, he could avoid the occasion early.

Steward Qin came back to himself and looked at Mu Yunyao in astonishment. “Miss has chosen the timing truly well. If this is handled properly, perhaps our Buxian Tower can become famous in one stroke!”

When he heard that the tea house would be called Buxian Tower, even he could not help marveling inwardly: I envy not golden wine vessels, nor cups of white jade. I envy not entering the Secretariat at dawn, nor ascending the Terrace at dusk. A thousand envies, ten thousand envies, all for the waters of the western river, once flowing down beneath Jingling City. Based on this poem alone, he felt one ought to come here and drink a cup of tea.

Hearing Steward Qin agree, and seeing that his words held no intention of avoidance, Mu Yunyao knew he was confident in concealing his identity. Thinking on it, that was reasonable. If he could be recognized so casually, he would not dare move about Jingling City so openly. “I hope it can truly be as Steward Qin says, and Buxian Tower will make its name throughout Jingling City.”

“Only, the tea-brewing skill of those fifty people is still lacking. If many guests come tomorrow…” Steward Qin felt some regret. Had he known earlier, he should have advised His Highness to choose people with greater natural talent. Perhaps by now they would already have understood the essence of tea-brewing that Miss Mu spoke of.

Mu Yunyao considered briefly. “Tomorrow, several esteemed lords will attend, and Madam Jin will likely invite other madams as well, so we will not receive ordinary guests. Wei Yi, Yun Chun, and the others may still be somewhat lacking, but when they brew tea together, the scene is exceedingly impressive. For the opening, why not have them brew tea together once as a display? Afterward, choose a few with the best skill to receive the guests.”

Steward Qin thought about it and nodded slightly. “That is the only way. In a while, I will call them over to practice again.”

“Good. I will also walk around the garden and see which areas should be shown tomorrow.”

“By the way, Miss, since our tea house now has a name, should we have a plaque made overnight and hung up?”

Mu Yunyao shook her head, a smile touching her lips. “A plaque we order ourselves would be rather dull. I am thinking of whether I can find someone to bestow one.”

At first, Steward Qin did not understand what she meant. Only after Mu Yunyao had left did he suddenly stand, wild joy breaking across his face. If they could truly obtain such a bestowed gift, then His Highness’s great plan would certainly succeed!

Previously, he had thought His Highness lending the garden to Mu Yunyao for a tea house was somewhat delaying proper affairs. Looking at it now, this was simply digging up a great treasure. He would write to His Highness at once—this treasure must be invited to the prince’s residence, no matter what!

Mu Yunyao busied herself until the latter half of the night, her mind ceaselessly turning over the matters of the next day. Only near dawn did she finally fall asleep. Two hours later, she woke again, yet she did not feel tired in the slightest. Instead, she was bright-eyed and full of spirit.

Su Qing brought in pastries and bird’s nest congee, nervousness lingering on her face. “Yao’er, there will still be much to do later. Hurry and eat something now.”

“Many thanks, Mother.” Mu Yunyao happily finished the food. When she raised her head, she noticed that Su Qing seemed to want to speak but stopped herself. She could not help asking, “Mother, what is it? Is there something you wish to remind me of?”

“This… Yao’er, if it is gained, it is my fortune; if it is lost, it is my fate. Keep an ordinary heart. You must not become too nervous, or it will be easier to make mistakes.” Yesterday, Mu Yunyao had already explained the entire sequence of events to her, including each of the plans in her heart. After hearing them, Su Qing had grown even more nervous than Mu Yunyao. Before anything had even begun, she was already worrying about gain and loss.

Mu Yunyao could not help laughing. She stepped forward and hugged Su Qing, rubbing lightly against the hollow of her neck. “With Mother’s support, I feel that this matter will certainly succeed. Just wait here for my good news.”

“All right.” Looking at Mu Yunyao’s manner, the tension in Su Qing’s heart gradually settled. She helped her change clothes, then combed her hair. Through the bronze mirror, she looked at herself carefully. “Yao’er is becoming more and more beautiful.”

Mu Yunyao’s eyes curved with her smile. “That is because I take after Mother. Mother is beautiful, so naturally I am beautiful as well.”

Su Qing could not help tapping her lightly on the head. “This thick skin of yours certainly did not come from Mother.”

Mu Yunyao refused to accept it and clung to Su Qing until Su Qing admitted she had spoken wrongly. Only when there was less than half an hour left before the hour of si did she finally bring Jin Lan and Jin Qiao to Jinxiu Garden.

Chapter 111: A Return Gift for His Majesty

Mu Yunyao nodded with quiet firmness. “In truth, I have long had a thought in my heart. I simply never dared hope for it. Now that such heavenly fortune has fallen upon me, perhaps my dream may finally come true.”

Hearing her speak this way, Madam Jin found the matter even more like childish play. “Say it first and let me hear.” If it was inappropriate, she could still persuade her to change it.

“I wish to ask His Majesty for a piece of imperial calligraphy, with the three characters Niyun Pavilion written upon it. Then, after I rebuild the embroidery workshop, I will have it made into a plaque and hang it above the entrance. I imagine that from then on, no petty villain would dare lay a hand on Niyun Pavilion again!”

Once Madam Jin heard this, she nodded repeatedly. “I had feared you would not be able to think of anything suitable in such haste. I did not expect you to have considered it even more thoroughly than I. This is indeed good. In a while, when Lord Su speaks with you, tell him this request.”

Yin Hong entered to report, “Madam, Master has sent someone over. He says Miss Mu is requested in the front hall.”

“I understand.” Madam Jin nodded toward Mu Yunyao. “Go quickly.”

Su Qingwu was seated beside Governor Zhang. Hearing the servant’s report, his movement of drinking tea paused, and his gaze turned toward the doorway of its own accord.

Mu Yunyao entered slowly, then bowed with impeccable propriety. “Greetings, esteemed lords.”

After several days of nursing her injuries, her body had recovered by more than half. Yet her complexion was still somewhat pale, and her chin seemed a little sharper than before, making those clear eyes appear even larger. When she lifted them slightly, light seemed to move softly within them, unusually stirring.

Su Qingwu withdrew his gaze, yet his thoughts turned unbidden to the warmth and softness his arms had felt that night. She was small and delicate, and even her bones had seemed almost pliant, making one feel that even touching her required the utmost care, lest one accidentally leave some harm behind…

“Lord Su?” Governor Zhang looked at Su Qingwu with some confusion. The message sent from the capital should naturally be spoken by him.

Su Qingwu immediately collected himself and said, “Miss Mu’s Niyun Pavilion has rendered merit to Jingling City. His Majesty intends to reward you further. However, as rewards have already been bestowed before, His Majesty could not immediately think of what else would be suitable. Thus, he specially sent an oral edict to ask whether there is anything Miss desires.”

From the moment she entered, Mu Yunyao had noticed a middle-aged man seated beside Su Qingwu. Though he wore ordinary clothing, his face was fair and beardless, and his manner carried a faintly soft, yin quality. With one glance, one could tell he came from the inner court. Presumably, this was the person sent to Jingling City to convey His Majesty’s oral edict.

Having understood the connection, she first turned toward the direction of the capital and lowered herself in a graceful bow. Only after respectfully kowtowing did she face Su Qingwu. “Lord Su, to receive His Majesty’s reward fills this common girl’s heart with fear and gratitude. Mother and I had only just arrived in Jingling City, yet we received much care from the people of Jingling and from Madam Jin. My heart was endlessly grateful. Thinking that I had nothing with which to repay them, and that only my embroidery skill could still be considered presentable, I taught it openly, wishing only to repay Jingling City in some small measure. I would never dare claim merit for myself.”

Su Qingwu’s eyes narrowed faintly. From the corner of his eye, he glanced at Eunuch Xu standing beside him, and the corners of his lips lifted by the slightest degree. Earlier, Mu Yunyao had clearly said that she spread the embroidery stitches to earn silver. Now, it had become repayment to Jingling City. Young though she was, she certainly knew how to adjust her words to the company before her.

“Miss Mu’s heart is truly rare. However, His Majesty’s word is golden. Since he has said he wishes to reward you, you may speak boldly.”

Mu Yunyao’s face filled with surprise and gratitude. Those clear eyes seemed capable of making the heart tremble. She turned once more toward the direction of the capital and bowed before speaking with some hesitation. “To speak of it, this common girl does indeed have one presumptuous wish.”

Eunuch Xu, standing beside Su Qingwu, could not help speaking. “Miss, whatever wish you have, there is no harm in saying it.” This young girl’s eyes were truly lively and refined. One look at them, and a few traces of fondness seemed to rise in the heart of their own accord.

A faint blush touched Mu Yunyao’s face, and the embarrassment in her eyes almost spilled over. It made Eunuch Xu even more curious. He could not help secretly wondering whether, seeing her expression, she might actually be harboring thoughts of entering the palace and attending at the Emperor’s side.

Mu Yunyao hesitated for a moment before finally saying, “I wish to ask His Majesty for a piece of imperial calligraphy.”

Eunuch Xu paused. Inwardly, he nearly slapped himself. He had truly spent too long in the palace, thinking of people’s hearts as too dark. Leaving aside the fact that the young girl before him was still so young, her clear, limpid manner did not make her seem like someone who would harbor such messy ambitions.

Noticing the good impression Eunuch Xu had formed of Mu Yunyao, Su Qingwu could not help but study the matter carefully. Others might not know, but he knew very well.

This Eunuch Xu, named Xu Li, was the most likely candidate to become Chief Eunuch. In ordinary times, he handled matters without the slightest leak and was deeply trusted by His Majesty. Who knew how many people had racked their brains trying to win a single good word from him? In the end, all they received were ambiguous responses that left them unable to grasp his meaning. Yet Mu Yunyao seemed to have touched his pulse in a single move.

A trace of surprise passed through Eunuch Xu’s eyes. “Miss wishes to ask for His Majesty’s calligraphy?”

“Yes. His Majesty’s grace is vast, and as the true dragon, His Majesty is awe-inspiring. His calligraphy must also carry the aura of the true dragon. It would surely protect this common girl with fortune, longevity, peace, and health.”

Mu Yunyao’s smile was brilliant, her eyes bright as stars. Her palm-sized face seemed almost to glow. Even Eunuch Xu could not help pausing. This young girl was no ordinary child.

He served His Majesty in the palace, and even the most upright censor-officials sometimes flattered the Emperor. Yet he had never seen anyone speak words of praise with such sincerity.

“Since that is so, when I return, I will report Miss’s words exactly as they are.”

The smile in Mu Yunyao’s eyes grew even brighter. “Many thanks, Your Excellency.” Reporting them exactly was best. Had she not behaved this way precisely so that the eunuch before her might speak a few good words for her in front of His Majesty?

“Your Excellency, my tea house will open tomorrow. I have a batch of tea leaves that I personally roasted. Might I ask Your Excellency to present them to His Majesty on my behalf? They may serve as my return gift, to express this common girl’s gratitude.”

Eunuch Xu froze for a moment. He had seen many people accept imperial rewards, but he had never seen someone receive a reward and still wish to return a gift to His Majesty. “As for this…”

Mu Yunyao lowered her eyes slightly. Her fingers twisted together uneasily, and her voice dipped with disappointment. “What I am best at is embroidery. Unfortunately, I injured my hand and have no way to embroider a screen to repay His Majesty. I can only take out the tea leaves I personally roasted before this and hope His Majesty can understand this small piece of gratitude.”

“To be honest with Miss, everything His Majesty consumes must pass through layer upon layer of inspection. Tea leaves must also be designated tribute goods. The sentiment behind Miss’s hand-roasted tea is rare, but I fear it cannot enter the palace city.”

Mu Yunyao’s eyes filled with disappointment. Then, in the next moment, a ray of hope appeared again. “So that is how it is? Then may I give the tea leaves to Your Excellency instead, and ask Your Excellency to take them to the capital to drink? In that way, it may still count as my intention reaching the capital.”

Eunuch Xu paused, then could not help laughing. “Very well. As it happens, I also enjoy tea. I can taste Miss’s craftsmanship.”

The young girl before him carried such pure-hearted sincerity that it was truly rare.

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 110

Chapter 110: Even Heaven Is Helping Her

After hearing Mu Yunyao’s words, some of the people below fell into thought, while others still looked as though they had not understood at all.

Mu Yunyao did not rush them. She merely reminded them to practice more whenever they had time, then went with Steward Qin to the flower hall in the front courtyard.

Steward Qin quickly ordered someone to bring over a bird’s nest, ginseng, and other medicinal ingredients for nourishing the body. After thanking him, Mu Yunyao had Jin Lan and Jin Qiao put them away one by one.

“I came today not only to welcome Wei Yi, Yun Chun, and the others back. There is also another matter I would like to discuss with Steward Qin.”

“Miss, please speak.”

“Niyun Pavilion has been burned down, but with the merit of having taught the embroidery stitches, it can be rebuilt at any time. As for our tea house, we have been preparing for so long. It is time for it to open.”

“Miss is right. Has Miss already thought of a name for the tea house?”

“Not yet. I will think it over carefully these next two days, then have someone make the plaque and send it over. I must ask Steward Qin to urge Wei Yi, Yun Chun, and the others to practice diligently. When the time comes, we will still be counting on them to uphold the scene.”

“Please rest assured, Miss. I have twice witnessed Miss’s tea-brewing skill, so I now have some measure in my heart. I will urge them according to Miss’s manner and will certainly make them learn properly.”

“Good. Then I will have to trouble Steward Qin.”

“Miss is too courteous.”

In Yuexi, at Yue Wang’s residence, two letters from Mu Yunyao arrived one after another. The light in Yue Wang’s eyes grew colder with each line he read, especially upon reaching the second letter. Niyun Pavilion had actually suffered trouble again and again.

Yu Heng presented the box that had been delivered along with the letter. “Master, this box was also sent by Miss Mu.”

Yue Wang opened it. When he saw what lay inside, his brows eased slightly. It was actually twenty thousand taels in silver notes… To others, twenty thousand taels might not be worth placing in their eyes, but to Yuexi, twenty thousand taels of silver was enough to relieve an urgent crisis.

Yuexi was already bitterly cold and barren. Added to that, Imperial Father had always detested him, so the Ministry of Revenue’s attitude toward Yuexi was even colder and more perfunctory. Now, they even dare to delay the military funds at will. Who would believe it if it were spoken aloud? He, a prince of the imperial blood, was actually being restrained by mere officials.

A trace of mockery passed through Yue Wang’s eyes. He took out the silver notes and spread them across the table. “Yu Heng, tell me—if I cannot even protect what belongs to me, what meaning is there in being this prince? Send word out. Use our people in court. Help Mu Yunyao bring Jingling City under control. Niyun Pavilion—this prince will protect it.”

“Yes, Master.” The cold pressure that swept toward him made Yu Heng’s heart tremble despite himself. “This subordinate will see to it at once.”

Mu Yunyao did not know that Yue Wang had been angered because of one of her letters. At the moment, she was still considering what name to give the tea house.

Su Qing brought over a bowl of bird’s nest congee. Seeing that Mu Yunyao was still deep in thought, she could not help feeling distressed. “Stop thinking about it for now. The more you think, the harder it is to find any direction. Rest a little. Perhaps inspiration will suddenly come.” It had been just like this when she had named Niyun Pavilion.

Mu Yunyao casually tossed the book aside and affectionately leaned closer to Su Qing. Her nose moved slightly, and her face turned greedy. “Mother’s cooking is the best. This bird’s nest congee smells truly fragrant.”

“Your tongue is sharper than a little dog’s nose. If anything is even slightly off, you can taste it at once. Mother has been forced into having no other way. Even when cooking, I must be especially careful about leaving the lid open, for fear it will catch a trace of smoke and make you lose your appetite.”

“Mother loves me best. In this world, only Mother is the best.” Mu Yunyao threw herself into Su Qing’s arms and acted spoiled. Her five senses were keen; if a flavor was even a little wrong, she could taste it. Yet she had never been picky. Even if she felt something did not taste good, she could still eat it calmly. It was Su Qing who could not bear for her to suffer the slightest grievance and tried in every possible way to make meals that suited her taste. Still, one had to say that during this period, Mother’s cooking had grown better and better.

Su Qing smiled as she watched Mu Yunyao finish the entire bowl of bird’s nest congee, then urged her to rest. “Stop thinking about that troublesome name. If you truly cannot think of one, Mother will help you.”

“All right. Then I will go rest.” Mu Yunyao nodded obediently.

Su Qing was satisfied. Only after watching her lie down on the bed did she leave, gently closing the door behind her.

After waiting a while, Mu Yunyao rose, picked up the book again, and sat by the window to continue reading.

Liu Liang stood outside the window without making the slightest sound. When Mu Yunyao casually raised her head, she met his cold eyes. Her heart jumped at once, and she shivered despite herself. “Liu Liang, are you trying to frighten someone to death?”

A trace of awkwardness flashed through Liu Liang’s eyes. “Master, forgive me…”

Mu Yunyao patted her chest. “It is fine. I have not yet asked you—did the trip to Qinhuai go smoothly?”

“Mm.” Liu Liang’s gaze fell again upon Mu Yunyao’s hand. “Miss is injured?”

“It is nothing serious. Just a small wound. It has nearly healed.” If not for the small tricks she had used to deal with Su Qingwu, the wound on her hand should have stopped hurting long ago. “You have only just returned. Go back and rest for two days, lest it seem that I, as your master, lack all humanity.”

Liu Liang looked at Mu Yunyao again. Under the gaze of those clear eyes, he found himself unable to say even a single word. He could only move swiftly and disappear from the courtyard.

Mu Yunyao blinked, opened the window, and propped her chin in her hand as she looked around. She could not help sighing. Knowing martial arts was truly convenient. Perhaps she should also learn a few self-defense moves from Liu Liang. At least when danger came, she would have a few more means of protecting herself. Also, in this short span of time, Liu Liang seemed to have grown a little more talkative again…

Two more days passed before the Emperor’s reply was sent back to Jingling City. Madam Jin sent Yin Hong to invite Mu Yunyao over.

During this period, Madam Jin had been busy moving through various connections and had not had time to visit Mu Yunyao. Today, seeing that the color in Mu Yunyao’s face had improved considerably, she felt somewhat relieved. “How are the injuries on your body and hand?”

“Thank you for your concern, Madam. They are much better now.” Mu Yunyao answered while curtsying. “I see that Madam’s complexion is not very good. These days have been chaotic, so Madam must take more care. The first three months are always the most unstable.”

Seeing that Mu Yunyao still kept her in mind, Madam Jin felt warmth settle in her heart. It had not been in vain that she had run about on Mu Yunyao’s behalf during this time. “These past two days, the morning sickness has been somewhat troublesome. It will be better after some time. I called you over today mainly because of the Niyun Pavilion. His Majesty flew into a rage after learning what happened in Jingling City. The Jingling Assistant Prefect and the Pacification Commissioner will soon be escorted to the capital to answer for their crimes. His Majesty intends to compensate you. Is there anything you wish to ask for?”

Mu Yunyao froze. She lifted her head and looked at Madam Jin in disbelief. “Madam, does what you said mean what I think it means?”

The smile on Madam Jin’s face brightened, and she nodded slightly, confirming Mu Yunyao’s guess. “His Majesty has also been vexed by those censor-officials, which is why this intention was passed down. The one who benefits is you. However, you must grasp the proper measure in this matter.”

Mu Yunyao hurriedly nodded, while in her heart, flowers had already burst into bloom.

Excellent. Truly excellent.

Even Heaven was helping her!

“Madam, I have already thought of it.”

“This is not a matter to be played with. You must consider carefully.” His Majesty had opened his mouth, allowing Mu Yunyao to make a request. Though the Emperor’s word was golden, if her request exceeded the proper bounds, His Majesty might agree now, but the thunderous wrath that followed would leave a person without even bones remaining. Mu Yunyao’s decision was made so quickly that Madam Jin felt uncertain.

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 109

Chapter 109: The Fifty Return

Mu Yunyao remained at home to recover in peace, while the whole of Jingling City seethed with talk.

Every shop belonging to the Ding family was sealed. Only after asking around did many commoners learn that the great fire at Niyun Pavilion had very likely been set by the Ding family. In an instant, whatever goodwill the people had toward the Dings vanished cleanly. Everywhere, voices rose, demanding that the Ding family be severely punished and that Miss Mu receive justice.

The Ding family members were thrown into prison. After only a brief interrogation, they confessed that they had acted under the orders of the Jingling Assistant Prefect and the Pacification Commissioner. Only then had evil courage risen from the edge of their hearts, leading them to set fire to Niyun Pavilion.

The moment those words spread, the entire city fell into uproar.

The Jingling Assistant Prefect and the Pacification Commissioner both had fairly decent reputations outside, and many commoners had once supported them. Now that people had heard they had ordered someone to burn down Niyun Pavilion, quite a few wondered whether the investigation had gone astray.

Immediately afterward, Governor Zhang publicly interrogated the two men, drawing countless people to the yamen gates to listen.

Neither of them admitted to burning the Niyun Pavilion. Yet after the investigation continued, other secrets—far more difficult to believe—were dragged into the light.

The Jingling Assistant Prefect had used his authority for private gain, embezzling several hundred thousand taels from the riverworks funds. He had even used his own wife, Ding Yuexin, to curry favor with higher officials, helping him conceal evidence and collude in corruption.

When the Pacification Commissioner heard this, he began fighting with the Jingling Assistant Prefect right there in court. The scene descended into chaos. Governor Zhang nearly broke his startling block from striking it so hard before he barely managed to restore order.

The news that came out afterward made people’s jaws drop. Ding Yuexin had actually maintained intimate relations with five men at the same time. The Ding family had risen so quickly and so gloriously entirely because she had traded away the dignity beneath her silken skirts.

In an instant, the Ding family became a target for public scorn. Even Ding Yuelan and the other Ding daughters were implicated, their reputations ruined beyond recovery.

Whether or not the fire at Niyun Pavilion had truly been set by them, the Jingling Assistant Prefect and the Pacification Commissioner no longer had any chance to turn the matter around.

Su Qingwu wrote a memorial detailing what had happened in Jingling City and submitted it to the court. Because the matter was urgent, and because he feared it might disturb the hearts of the people, he had the report sent overnight to the capital by courier horse.

As soon as the news entered the capital, the censor-officials submitted memorial after memorial, requesting that His Majesty punish the matter severely.

Mu Yunyao naturally heard of what had happened to the Jingling Assistant Prefect and the Pacification Commissioner. She even sent Jin Lan to inquire about Ding Yuelan’s situation. Unfortunately, after asking around for quite some time, Jin Lan still could not obtain any reliable news.

After seven or eight days of rest, the small wounds on Mu Yunyao’s body had already healed as before. Only the wound in her palm still ached faintly. Counting the days, she estimated that Liu Liang and the others should be returning soon, so she wanted to go to Jinxiu Garden.

Even though it was only next door, Su Qing refused to let her leave, no matter what. Mu Yunyao exhausted every trick she knew and made promise after promise before she was finally permitted to take Jin Lan and Jin Qiao with her to the neighboring residence.

As soon as Steward Qin heard the news, he hurried out to welcome her. “Greetings, Miss Mu. How are your injuries?”

“Thank you for your concern, Steward Qin. They are no longer serious.”

“Miss’s complexion still looks worn. You must rest more. This old servant prepared some bird’s nest and ginseng, but I did not dare send them over rashly for fear Madam might misunderstand. When Miss leaves later, you must take them with you.”

“Then many thanks, Steward Qin.”

Mu Yunyao sat beside the pavilion to wait. The agreement had been made: fifteen days later, at this same hour, the fifty people would return here. Aside from others, Liu Liang would certainly come back on time.

Just as she was thinking this, a servant came forward to report. “Miss, Steward Qin, Wei Yi, Yun Chun, and the others have returned.”

A brightness entered Mu Yunyao’s eyes. “Invite them in.”

Steward Qin was also full of curiosity. He did not know whether half a month along the banks of the Qinhuai had changed those people at all.

Liu Liang walked at the front. After entering, he was the first to bow to Mu Yunyao. Then he silently stood at her side, his gaze quietly resting on her all the while, carrying a shade of emotion that could not quite be named.

Wei Yi and Yun Chun followed slightly behind. Their expressions were still mild, as though no different from before, yet upon closer look, something in their bearing had indeed changed.

Mu Yunyao’s gaze swept over them one by one, and a trace of approval passed through her eyes. “Go prepare yourselves and change your clothes. After that, return here and brew a pot of tea.”

“Yes, Miss.”

Before long, all fifty had changed and returned. The fifty sat behind their respective tea tables and bowed in unison toward Mu Yunyao and Steward Qin.

Steward Qin’s eyes widened despite himself. They were clearly still the same people, yet their bearing had become entirely different. Before, they had also worn smiles, but no matter how bright those smiles were, there had always been a cold edge beneath them. Now, looking at them made one feel far more at ease, far more natural.

Mu Yunyao gave a slight nod. “Begin.”

The fifty moved as one to prepare tea. White sleeves drifted gently with each motion. Water poured into the clay kettles with a clear, tinkling sound. Before long, the fragrance of tea rose into the air. Lids touched lightly against cups, producing a crisp note. Then the fifty bowed in unison once more, hands gathered neatly before them as they knelt behind their tea tables.

A gleam of pleasant surprise appeared on Steward Qin’s face. These people already possessed five or six of the charms Mu Yunyao carried while brewing tea. In particular, when so many of them moved together, the sight was deeply striking. “What does Miss think?”

The people below also raised their heads one after another to look at Mu Yunyao, waiting for her approval.

Mu Yunyao, however, shook her head slightly. “It is overdone.”

“Overdone?” Steward Qin did not understand. “Please enlighten us, Miss.”

“When our tea house opens its doors to guests, among so many visitors, how many will truly love tea? I believe not even one or two out of ten. Of the many guests, some will come for social dealings, some merely to pose as refined. If we cannot stand apart, then among so many tea houses and tea establishments, why should others choose ours?”

As Mu Yunyao spoke, she rose, sat behind a tea table, and began preparing tea.

Her face was still somewhat pale and weary, and her clothes were extremely plain. Yet the moment her hands began to move, every gaze settled upon her. It was clearly the same method of preparing tea, but when she performed it, there was a beauty like flowing clouds and running water that others could not imitate.

“Without my saying it, you all know that this tea house is not merely for earning silver. If we cannot draw in as many people as possible, then there is no meaning in opening it at all. After returning, your expressions are indeed much more vivid than before. But remember this: ours is a tea house. What we seek is to wash away worldly dust and uphold refined elegance. What you display is not yourselves, but the tea in your hands. Therefore, your own presence must also merge with the tea.”

Her voice was clear and crisp. As she prepared tea, her words flowed unhurriedly. It was as though each sentence drifted with the tea fragrance into the depths of the heart, leaving the mind quiet, with only her voice echoing softly within it.

Mu Yunyao drew her movements to a close and placed the teacup gently before Steward Qin. Her smile did not deliberately pursue gentleness or beauty. It even seemed somewhat faint, somewhat distant. Yet everyone felt that she ought to be exactly so. Without realizing it, a few traces of yearning and admiration rose in their hearts.

Mu Yunyao lifted her eyes to look at the crowd. “You must please the guests, but you must not be humble or fawning. Instead, you must make them willingly lower their guard and regard you as confidants. Only then can you obtain what you need. As for the measure within that, you must grasp it yourselves.”

Such things could only be understood in the heart and could not be fully passed on through words. Even she had no way to explain them clearly. Among these people, some had already glimpsed the path. With more practice, they would be able to reach completion.

Steward Qin sighed in admiration at himself. When it came to training people, Miss Mu truly had methods. Even he could not help feeling respect. The fifty people selected at the beginning could not be considered especially outstanding; their strength lay in loyalty, sincerity, and the ability to carry out His Highness’s orders without hesitation. But now, he suddenly had a feeling that these fifty people might one day become capable of great things—far beyond His Highness’s expectations.

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 108

Chapter 108: Madam Jin Visits

That night, Governor Zhang and the officials of Jingling City nearly worried their hair white. Every available hand was sent out to investigate the cause of the fire at Niyun Pavilion.

At the time, so many commoners had been present. Everyone had seen the heavy copper lock hanging on Niyun Pavilion’s main door. By now, talk had already spread through the city: someone had deliberately tried to murder Mu Yunyao. It was not enough to set the fire in the dead of night—they had even locked the door to keep those inside from escaping.

More than half the people of Jingling City had profited from learning the embroidery stitches. At such a time, if the matter were not investigated swiftly and clearly, the common people alone would not let it pass.

Early the next morning, Madam Jin arrived at Mu Yunyao’s home. Su Qing had just finished preparing eight-treasure rice for Mu Yunyao. Seeing Madam Jin, she hurriedly brought a smile to her face. Though a trace of strain remained, the sincerity was real. “Greetings, Madam Jin. I heard from Yao’er that your body is inconvenient at present, yet you still troubled yourself to come all this way. On Yao’er’s behalf, I thank Madam.”

Madam Jin stepped forward and took Su Qing’s hand. Concern and worry covered her face. “Yunyao is clever and considerate, and she has helped me more than once. Now that such a disaster has suddenly befallen her, how could I not come to see her? Is Yunyao awake now?”

“She has just woken. She insisted on eating eight-treasure rice, so I have only just finished making it and was about to bring it to her.”

“Then that is perfect. I shall go see her.”

Mu Yunyao was leaning against the bedside, staring absently at her own hand. Hearing footsteps at the door, she quickly put on a sweet smile and called toward it in a spoiled tone, “Mother, is the eight-treasure rice ready? Your Yao’er is about to starve to death!”

Su Qing smiled helplessly at Madam Jin. “Yao’er has always had this temperament. I have made Madam laugh.”

Madam Jin paused for a moment. She had not expected Mu Yunyao, who was always so meticulous and thoughtful in ordinary times, to have such a childlike side. Seeing the indulgent smile on Su Qing’s face, she could not help feeling a little envious. If she had such a daughter herself, she feared she would also spoil her to the heavens.

Only after hearing Su Qing’s voice did Mu Yunyao realize that Madam Jin had also come. A touch of embarrassment immediately appeared on her face, and she made as if to get out of bed to greet her.

Madam Jin quickly entered and stopped her. “Lie down properly. At a time like this, what is there to fuss over etiquette for? I heard from Lord Cao that you were gravely injured and nearly fell from a great height. Merely hearing of it made one’s heart leap in fear. You, the person who suffered through it, must have been terribly frightened.”

Mu Yunyao did not insist on rising. “I have made Madam worry. It is nothing serious, only some superficial wounds. After a few days of nursing them, they will heal.”

Her complexion was pale, and she wore snow-white inner garments, making her seem all the more small and delicate. Especially that palm-sized little face, without the slightest color in it, made one’s heart soften at the sight.

Madam Jin examined her hand. It was wrapped thickly in white cloth, with faint traces of blood seeping through. Distress crossed her face. “There is ointment in my residence for treating burns. If used for a period of time, it can lighten the scars. When I return, I will have it prepared and ask Yin Hong to send it to you. For now, do not think about anything. Someone will naturally seek justice for you in the other matters.”

Mu Yunyao lowered her head slightly, and the light in her eyes dimmed. “Previously, when someone set a fire, we still could not find out who did it. This time it happened in the middle of the night. I fear it will be difficult to trace anything.”

“Rest assured. This time, even if they have to dig three chi into the ground, they will certainly drag the culprit out.” Madam Jin’s voice was unusually firm.

Mu Yunyao nodded and gave Madam Jin a grateful smile. “Many thanks, Madam.”

“Focus on recovering properly. I am still waiting to wear the clothes you make for me.”

“Yes. For Madam’s sake, I must recover as soon as possible.”

“Rest well. I shall come to see you another day.” Madam Jin stopped Mu Yunyao from rising to see her off, and Su Qing escorted her out instead.

After leaving the courtyard and getting into the carriage, Madam Jin still carried that look of concern. Yin Hong, who was beside her, helped arrange the soft cushion behind her. Seeing her expression, she could not help saying, “Madam treats Miss Mu truly well.”

Madam Jin lightly stroked her abdomen, her voice carrying a sigh. “That is because she is worthy of it.”

Because the Cao Residence was closest to Niyun Pavilion, Governor Zhang, Su Qingwu, and the others had all gathered there. When Madam Jin returned, urgency appeared in everyone’s eyes.

“Greetings, Governor Zhang. Greetings, Lord Su…”

“Madam need not stand on ceremony. We have troubled Madam to make a trip so early in the morning. May I ask how Miss Mu is now?” Governor Zhang was the first to ask.

Madam Jin’s expression turned grave. Before speaking, she shook her head. “Such a delicate young girl suffered through a great fire in the middle of the night and nearly fell from the building. Shock and fright alone have taken half her life. Her condition is truly not good.”

At those words, Governor Zhang grew even more anxious. “Then I must trouble Madam Jin to make a few more trips. Find the best physician in Jingling City and send him over. We must ensure that Miss Mu is safe and sound.”

“Yes. Only, Miss Mu’s hand is truly badly injured. There was already a wound on her hand before, and this time, escaping down the cloth rope… that hand can hardly be looked at now. Even if we invite the best physician in Jingling City, I fear…”

Madam Jin did not finish, but everyone present understood the meaning behind her words.

What Mu Yunyao excelled at most was embroidery, and embroidery depended entirely upon the hands. Once her fingers were injured, how could she hold a needle and thread in the future?

Sweat gathered on Governor Zhang’s forehead. “For now, do everything possible to treat it. Whatever extent it can recover to, let it recover to that extent.”

Su Qingwu’s expression showed not the slightest change, yet the hand hidden inside his sleeve slowly tightened. Before his eyes, the image rose unbidden: Mu Yunyao falling from the building and dropping into his arms.

She had been in a wretched state, her face pale, and even those eyes that usually carried a clever, foxlike brightness had been exceptionally dim. One could not look at her then without feeling something stir in the chest.

“Governor Zhang, Lord Cao, this matter must certainly be reported to His Majesty. I ask both officials to investigate the cause and sequence of events as soon as possible.”

“Lord Su, rest assured. We will certainly investigate clearly as quickly as we can.”

As they were speaking, the constables sent out to investigate hurried in to report. “Reporting to the officials, we have found some clues. The copper lock used to lock Niyun Pavilion’s main door was purchased from one of the Ding family’s shops.”

“The Ding family?” Governor Zhang immediately stood, a strange light passing through his eyes. “If one truly considers it, the only family that has recently had conflict with Niyun Pavilion is the Ding family!”

Su Qingwu asked, “Conflict with Niyun Pavilion? Who are this Ding family?”

Governor Zhang immediately explained the Ding family’s recent affairs in detail. In his tone, he faintly mentioned the Jingling Assistant Prefect and the Pacification Commissioner. Though he did not say it outright, everyone present understood his meaning.

Cao Yunnian remained silent at the side. He had no particular dealings with the Jingling Assistant Prefect, but his grievances with Pacification Commissioner Zhou Ao ran deep. Now that he and Governor Zhang stood on the same side, Governor Zhang clearly intended to seize this chance to remove dissenters. For Cao Yunnian not to add stones to the man fallen in the well was already benevolence and righteousness to the utmost.

Su Qingwu lifted his teacup and took a small sip. “Since Governor Zhang already has suspects in mind, it is best to uncover the truth as soon as possible. That will also provide an explanation to His Majesty.”

Joy stirred in Governor Zhang’s heart. Su Qingwu’s attitude was as close to tacit agreement with his thinking as possible. “I will investigate as quickly as possible. Within three days, I will certainly give Lord Su a result.”

After leaving the main hall, Madam Jin returned to the rear courtyard, the smile in her eyes deepening.

“Madam, this servant heard that some clues seem to have been found?”

“Not merely some clues. It seems the matter is almost ready to be settled.”

“Master handles affairs with such swift decisiveness. It truly inspires admiration.”

“This time, it is not Master’s credit. It is Governor Zhang’s excellent guidance.”

Madam Jin’s lips curved, her mood quite good. Governor Zhang had said that within three days, he would give Su Qingwu a result. In other words, either the matter would be investigated clearly within three days, and the true culprit found, or the Jingling Assistant Prefect and the Pacification Commissioner would be the result he handed over.

Moreover, Governor Zhang clearly leaned more toward the second option. Without the Pacification Commissioner, one of the stones pressing on her husband’s heart would also be removed.

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 107

Chapter 107: Nothing Remained

At midnight, Jingling City lay wrapped in silence. Then, without warning, a blaze shot upward, rushing straight into the sky and staining the night red.

The constables patrolling the streets struck their bronze gongs, jolting the people across several streets awake. One after another, they threw on outer robes and looked toward the place where the firelight rose. At a single glance, their faces changed. “Is that not the direction of Niyun Pavilion?”

Before long, more than half of Jingling City had been roused from sleep. Cao Yunnian did not even have time to dress properly before he rushed to the foot of Niyun Pavilion.

Some of the people had already begun putting out the fire on their own. Yet the blaze was fierce, and extinguishing it was no easy matter.

Cold sweat covered Cao Yunnian’s forehead. “Where is Miss Mu? Is there still anyone inside Niyun Pavilion?”

“The main door seems to be locked. There should be no one inside…” The person who spoke sounded uncertain. After all, so much had happened recently, and Miss Mu and the others had been living inside Niyun Pavilion all this time.

“No one is good. Good, as long as no one is inside…” Before Cao Yunnian could finish wiping away his sweat, cries for help suddenly rang out from above.

“Help! Help us!”

Cao Yunnian abruptly raised his head. On the third floor, shadowy figures moved behind the flames. Then a window was pushed open, quilts were thrown down one after another, and a rope made of cloth dropped from the window.

All color drained from Cao Yunnian’s face. Mu Yunyao had only just received His Majesty’s reward. If something happened to her now, he feared even his official hat would not remain on his head. He immediately shouted orders to the guards below. “Hurry and save them! Do not let the fire reach the cloth rope. Quickly!”

Upstairs, Mu Yunyao supported Su Qing. “Mother, do not be afraid. Just climb down along the cloth rope. There are quilts spread below, so even if you fall, it will not hurt much.”

“Yao’er, you go first!”

“Mother, hurry. Do not delay.” Mu Yunyao pressed the cloth rope into Su Qing’s hand, then pushed her toward the window. “Si Qin, you go second. Protect my mother well.”

“Yes. Miss, rest assured.” Si Qin nodded firmly, then followed Su Qing down the rope.

Only after seeing Su Qing land safely on the ground did Mu Yunyao release the breath she had been holding in her chest. She then directed Jin Lan and the others to go down.

“Miss, you go first!”

“I am fine. Hurry and go.”

By the time Su Qingwu arrived on horseback at Niyun Pavilion, the fire could no longer be restrained.

Cao Yunnian’s face was deathly pale, his robes nearly soaked through with cold sweat. He kept shouting up toward the building, “Miss Mu, come down quickly!”

Mu Yunyao was the last to leave Niyun Pavilion. The fire was too great; she had no choice but to pour water over herself before sliding swiftly down the cloth rope. Sparks fell past her from time to time. The wound in her palm was rubbed open, sending pain deep into the bone. Just as she descended halfway, the lower end of the cloth rope suddenly caught fire, and the flames raced upward.

Su Qing nearly collapsed in fright. Her cry tore through the night. “Yao’er!”

“Miss Mu!”

“Miss, be careful!”

Mu Yunyao lowered her head and looked at the ground below. Then she bit down hard on her lip, released her hands, and fell.

She squeezed her eyes shut and tried to curl her body as tightly as possible, hoping to lessen the force of the fall. Yet just as she braced herself for pain, she suddenly dropped into an embrace filled with a cool fragrance.

The moment Su Qingwu dismounted, he saw Mu Yunyao hanging in midair in that perilous state. With no time to think, he rushed below. When the cloth rope caught fire, he was just about to step forward to save her when he saw Mu Yunyao let go and jump. Fortunately, he reacted in time and reached out to catch her. Otherwise, that fall would likely have cost her half her life.

“Miss Mu, are you hurt?”

Mu Yunyao opened her eyes and could not help coughing twice. After confirming that Su Qing and the others were safe and unharmed, she fainted outright.

Su Qingwu’s hands tightened. The person in his arms was in a sorry state, her clothes damp with water, her cheeks stained with soot and ash. Yet he paid none of that any mind. All he sensed was warmth and softness. Her figure was slender and delicate, almost as though boneless. Now that she had suddenly lost consciousness, the full weight of her body rested in his arms, and the strange feeling in his chest deepened without warning.

Jin Lan and Jin Qiao hurried forward and took Mu Yunyao from his arms, calling softly, “Miss, Miss, wake up.”

Seeing that Mu Yunyao’s life was not in danger, Cao Yunnian finally released a breath. But the fire burning in his chest seemed fiercer than the flames before him. “How could a fire suddenly break out for no reason? And everyone was upstairs, unable to come out, yet the main door was locked from the outside?”

The weight in his arms vanished abruptly. Su Qingwu lowered his hands and clenched them into fists. His gaze fell on the main door of Niyun Pavilion, which had not yet collapsed. Through the firelight, he could vaguely make out the large lock hanging on the door, and his face darkened at once.

This time, he had come to escort His Majesty’s reward. In the morning, he had just delivered the rewards to Niyun Pavilion. By night, they had been burned clean by a single fire. How was he to return to the capital and report?

Governor Zhang also hurried over in disarray. When he saw Niyun Pavilion being swallowed by fire, his vision nearly went black, and he almost stumbled to the ground.

Su Qingwu turned to look at him, his voice carrying a faint pressure. “Governor Zhang, this matter must be investigated thoroughly. Otherwise, I truly will have no way to account for it before His Majesty.”

“Lord Su, rest assured. This humble official will certainly investigate this matter until the truth comes to light.” Governor Zhang’s teeth clenched hard. He immediately sent people to search the surroundings and examine whether any traces had been left behind.

When Mu Yunyao woke again, she had already returned home. Su Qing sat beside her, silently shedding tears.

“Mother…”

Su Qing trembled, then quickly wiped her tears away. Joy lit her face. “Yao’er, you are awake? That is wonderful. Mother was nearly worried to death.”

Mu Yunyao sat up. Her palm brushed against the bedding, and the pain made her draw in a quiet breath.

“Your hands and body are both injured. Do not move about. Whatever you wish to do, Mother will help you.”

Mu Yunyao, however, insisted on sitting up. She leaned directly into Su Qing’s arms, ignoring the wound in her hand as she clutched tightly at Su Qing’s lapel. “Mother, I am sorry.”

Su Qing froze. In the next moment, her tears fell even harder. “Silly child. It is enough that you are safe. Do not be afraid. There is nothing to fear now.”

Mu Yunyao only wept without speaking, apologizing to Su Qing again and again. She had no way to tell Mother that the fire had been set by her own hand. She had no way to keep Mother from worrying over her. She could only use this method to soothe a little of the guilt pressing upon her heart.

Su Qing held her close, patting her back again and again as she had when Mu Yunyao was small. “It is over. It is over now…”

Only after a long while did Mu Yunyao gradually steady herself. “Mother, what happened to Niyun Pavilion?”

“The fire burned too fiercely. Everything was burned away.” Su Qing had felt pain over it before, but now that she saw Mu Yunyao safe and sound, those worldly possessions no longer mattered. Instead, she comforted her daughter. “Yao’er, if Niyun Pavilion is gone, then we can open it again. Do not be too sad.”

Mu Yunyao nodded. “I understand. Mother must not be sad either. In the future, I will certainly open an even better embroidery workshop for you.”

“Good. Whatever Yao’er says is good.”

Mu Yunyao rubbed lightly against Su Qing’s embrace. “Tonight, I want to sleep with Mother.”

Su Qing stroked her hair. Hearing this, a gentle smile opened across her face. “All right. Then we shall sleep together.” She, too, had been frightened. Only by holding Mu Yunyao could her heart settle a little.

Mu Yunyao nestled beside Su Qing. The moisture in her eyes slowly faded, replaced by a boundless coldness.

Mother, rest assured. We will rebuild the Niyun Pavilion very soon.

After roughly half an hour, Mu Yunyao’s breathing gradually evened out. Only then did Su Qing slowly open her eyes. She turned her head slightly and looked at her daughter’s peaceful sleeping face. A thick ache crossed her gaze. After a long while, she gently adjusted the brocade quilt over Mu Yunyao, then lay beside her and fell asleep.
