Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 156

Chapter 156: A Careful Explanation for Su Qing

Only then did everyone return to their senses. They echoed one another in praise, while their eyes strayed more than once toward Mu Yunyao. None of them knew how her mind worked. Even clothing, in her hands, could be transformed into so many clever designs—and the crucial point was that every design stirred the heart, making them wish they could have such a set for themselves.

This was especially true for the madams. Their gazes seemed almost unable to part from the two outfits. At their age and status, many things could no longer be spoken aloud too directly. Yet to use clothing to quietly suggest the affection between husband and wife—subtle, veiled, and graceful—made them yearn for it all the more.

Originally, everyone had thought that Mu Yunyao was the one benefiting from this god-kinship. Now, however, it was difficult to say who had truly gained the greater advantage.

When the banquet began, the madams’ manner toward Mu Yunyao and Su Qing grew noticeably warmer. They were only short of writing the words I have a favor to ask directly on their faces.

Mu Yunyao merely pretended not to understand. With a smile, she accompanied everyone until the banquet came to an end.

By the time the feast concluded, nearly two hours had passed. After seeing off the guests, Mu Yunyao accompanied Madam Jin back to the rear courtyard. “Godmother, you truly worked hard today.” As she spoke, she helped check Madam Jin’s pulse.

“I was happy today. Even if it was tiring, it was worth it. Besides, you prepared everything so thoroughly for me that I did not feel weary at all.”

Madam Jin looked at Mu Yunyao, and the more she looked, the more affection gathered in her eyes. The outfit she wore was not only light but also warm. Earlier, in her previous clothes, she had felt chilled all over, but after changing into the garments Mu Yunyao had made, she felt much more comfortable. Even the shoes on her feet had cotton and mugwort added to the soles; they were soft, good for the body, and did not tire her when she walked.

After taking her pulse, Mu Yunyao’s smile eased. “Godmother’s pulse is perfectly steady. It seems my little brother was happy today as well, so he has been especially well-behaved.”

Madam Jin stroked her belly. “If he could be this well-behaved every day, I would wake laughing even from my dreams. Ah—look at this mischievous little one. I had only just finished speaking, and he already seems unconvinced. Now he is punching and kicking again.”

Mu Yunyao gently placed her hand on Madam Jin’s belly and deliberately put on a trace of sternness. “You must behave and listen. You are not allowed to make trouble in Godmother’s belly. Otherwise, this elder sister will not let you off.”

Whether by coincidence or not, the child who had been moving restlessly suddenly quieted, as though he had understood Mu Yunyao’s words. Madam Jin’s face lit with surprise again and again.

Mu Yunyao laughed with her for a while but did not linger. “Godmother has been tired all day. You should rest now. I will come to keep you company another day.”

“Good. You and Younger Sister Su must be exhausted as well. Go back and rest quickly.”

“Yao’er takes her leave.”

On the way home, the excitement in Su Qing’s chest had yet to settle. “Yao’er, I keep feeling that after those madams saw the clothes you made for Lord Cao and Madam Jin, they became especially warm toward me. Can a single set of clothes truly have such influence?”

Mu Yunyao could not help laughing. “What they were looking at was not the clothes themselves, but the status those clothes represented.”

“What sort of status can an ordinary set of clothes represent?” Su Qing grew even more puzzled.

“A single outfit on its own is nothing particularly special. But when Godfather and Godmother’s outfits are placed together, they become just as the governor’s wife said—butterflies lingering over flowers, symbolizing affection between husband and wife. Those who attended today’s banquet were all legitimate wives of their households. Although they hold the title of main wife, they are not necessarily the most favored women in their residences. Which household does not have one or two favored concubines to vex them?”

“But can one set of clothes help them win favor?” Su Qing knew that great households often had many concubines in the rear courtyard. As the official wife, having to constantly face a favored concubine was indeed enough to leave one ill at ease.

“It may not necessarily help them win favor, but at the very least, it can display their status. Such clothing is something only a legitimate wife may wear as a matching set with her husband.” Moreover, what those official wives valued most was often precisely this status. As for whether they were favored or not, one could not say they cared nothing at all, but at least half of them no longer placed it first in their hearts.

Su Qing nodded, a quiet sigh settling in her expression. “In the past, I only thought those madams lived in glory. Now it seems their lives are not entirely as one might wish.”

“The deeper the mansion and the greater the household, the more hidden paths there are inside. Mother will understand gradually after seeing more of it.”

“Mm. Yao’er, do not worry. If I do not understand, I shall listen more and watch more. In time, I will learn to see things clearly.”

Mu Yunyao naturally knew that Su Qing was doing all of this for her. Warmth rose behind her eyes. She could not help throwing herself into her mother’s embrace. “Mother is so good to me.”

“Silly girl.”

After returning home, Mu Yunyao also felt rather tired, so she went straight to rest.

Out on the streets, however, Steward Qin and the others were busy until the sky turned completely dark. Only when the stacked mountain of rice had become a pile of empty sacks did people gradually stop coming to receive porridge.

Those who had helped distribute the porridge were so tired they could barely walk. Once they sat down on the ground, none of them wanted to move. They had never imagined that a single bowl of Laba porridge could be so eagerly sought after by the people.

Yu Yi could not help asking Steward Qin, “Do you think the entire population of Jingling City came to receive porridge today?”

“Perhaps more than that.”

“More than that?”

“Yes. There are many merchants in Jingling City these days. Just now, I saw quite a few people in fine clothing come to receive porridge as well. Those people did not look as though they were lacking this one bowl of porridge.”

Yu Yi grew even more confused. “Since they did not lack this bowl of porridge, why did they insist on lining up to receive it?”

“I told Yue Wang long ago that when choosing people, one cannot look only at martial skill and loyalty. One must also see whether they have a brain. When you saw the scene today, with the whole city receiving Laba porridge together, how did it feel?”

“If you ask how it felt… aside from feeling warm inside, there was nothing especially different. Oh, and it was very tiring.”

“Then did you feel the exhaustion was worth it?”

Yu Yi looked around at the people who had not yet dispersed. Every face still carried a smile. For some reason, although his body remained heavy with fatigue, there was a quiet satisfaction in his chest that he could not quite put into words. “It was worth it.”

Steward Qin smiled as well. “That is exactly it. Those who came to receive porridge may not truly have lacked that one bowl. What they wanted was to take part in such a scene. If I have guessed correctly, Jingling City is about to become famous again.”

The lively day came to an end. One night passed, the morning sun rose, and it was another new day.

Mu Yunyao began preparing for the New Year. This was the first New Year she would spend with her mother since her rebirth. In Su Qing’s eyes, every day had been spent together with her, but to Mu Yunyao, it had already been many years since she had passed a New Year at her mother’s side.

Because of that, she treated this year with particular care. She only hoped to invite good fortune during the New Year, so that the days ahead might proceed smoothly. In addition, she had now recognized a pair of Godparents, so the New Year gifts needed to be prepared with even greater thought.

At this time, a special gift was being sent by fast horse all the way into the imperial city of the capital.

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 155

Chapter 155: Distributing Porridge

“Yunyao pays respects to Governor Zhang and the governor’s wife, and to Lord Cao and Madam Jin.” At this moment, naturally, she would only change her form of address after the formal god-kinship ceremony was completed. Thus, Mu Yunyao still addressed them as Lord Cao and Madam Jin.

Cao Yunnian looked her over, approval brightening his eyes. “Yao’er, quickly rise.”

Madam Jin also rose and led Su Qing forward to pay respects to Governor Zhang and the governor’s wife.

The governor’s wife personally helped Su Qing up, her manner exceedingly gentle. “Madam Su, there is no need for such ceremony. Please take your seat. Today, you are the honored ones. We may speak at leisure another day.”

“Yes. Many thanks, Madam.”

The rites for recognizing god-kinship were not actually complicated. Yin Hong set out the kneeling cushion, and Mu Yunyao stepped forward to kowtow and offer tea to Cao Yunnian and Madam Jin.

Both of them gave her ample face. After accepting the tea, each took a large sip. Then Cao Yunnian ordered someone to bring over a tray. When the red cloth covering it was lifted, everyone saw a golden bowl, a pair of golden chopsticks, a golden spoon, and a longevity lock laid upon it.

Cao Yunnian handed the items to Mu Yunyao and said, “From this day forward, you are the Goddaughter of Madam and me. Your Godmother and I hope you will live in peace and safety, and enjoy a long life of a hundred years.”

Looking at the exquisite set of gifts, Mu Yunyao’s eyes filled with genuine warmth. “Yunyao thanks Godfather and Godmother.”

“Good. Quickly rise.”

Mu Yunyao stood. “Godfather, Godmother, your daughter has also prepared a few things. I hope Godfather and Godmother will not disdain them.”

Jin Lan and Jin Qiao each entered carrying a tray.

When Madam Jin saw what lay upon the trays, she paused slightly. A moment later, heat gathered at the rims of her eyes. “You child… Because the New Year is near, the chosen date was set rather close. Altogether, there were only four or five days. How did you manage to prepare so many things?”

On the trays rested two full sets of clothing, one for a man and one for a woman. One glance was enough to see that they had been prepared for Cao Yunnian and Madam Jin. The fabrics chosen were all exceedingly fine, and every accessory had been completed. Even from the visible sections alone, the embroidery was exquisite. No matter how swift Mu Yunyao’s needlework was, she must have had to work through the nights to finish them.

The governor’s wife could not help showing a trace of envy. “This child Yunyao is truly filial. You two are blessed indeed. At the banquet later, you should wear these clothes and let us all admire them.”

Madam Jin was naturally willing to give Mu Yunyao this honor and quickly nodded in agreement. “Very well. I shall change into them later.”

Facing such an occasion for the first time, Su Qing felt somewhat at a loss. Fortunately, Madam Jin treated her with particular intimacy, and Mu Yunyao conducted herself with exceptional dignity and grace. Because of this, everyone unconsciously held Su Qing in a little more respect, and their words toward her were especially mild, allowing her to feel far more at ease.

Meanwhile, in Jingling City, porridge sheds had been set up along several main streets. Steward Qin had temporarily closed Buxian Tower and brought Wei Yi, Yun Chun, and the others onto the streets to help distribute porridge.

The embroiderers of Niyun Pavilion were not idle either. Some helped serve porridge, while others brought out leftover scraps of fabric from the embroidery workshop and distributed them to poor households.

When the people saw the great cauldrons that had been set up and the towering stacks of grain sacks behind them, the whole of Jingling City was stirred. In past years, there were naturally people who distributed porridge on the Laba Festival as well, but most only put on a show. They would bring out two buckets, ladle out a little for wandering beggars, display their kindness, and earn themselves a charitable name. Who had ever seen porridge distributed with such sincerity?

The lives of common people were always stretched tight. This year, because Mu Yunyao had taught embroidery skills, many households were somewhat better off than before. Yet the weather had suddenly turned cold, winter clothes needed to be added, and silver was still not enough. Thinking that even a little saved counted, people took their bowls and chopsticks and went out to queue for porridge.

When the people drew close to the porridge sheds and saw what was in the pots, their eyes widened one after another. Firewood still burned beneath the temporary stoves. A great pot of thick Laba porridge bubbled and simmered, and each burst of steam released a rich, mellow fragrance into the air. The ingredients in the porridge were genuine and plentiful: glutinous rice, coix seed, lotus seeds, lily bulbs, red dates, millet, walnuts, hyacinth beans… With a rough count, there seemed to be more than ten kinds of ingredients inside.

Steward Qin smiled as he filled a bowl to the brim for the first person to come receive porridge. “Old sir, drink slowly. If it is not enough, you may come back for another serving. Just be sure to line up again.”

The elderly man who received the porridge smiled broadly. “No need, no need. At my age, I cannot eat much. This one bowl of Laba porridge will be enough to last me the whole day!”

Steward Qin paused. Then he took a small spoonful of sugar from the wooden bucket beside him and added it to the old man’s bowl. “Please enjoy it slowly, old sir.”

The old man froze for a moment, then bent in a bow, “Many thanks, Shopkeeper Qin. Many thanks to Madam Jin and Miss Mu!”

Perhaps influenced by the old man’s gesture, every person who received porridge afterward murmured a word of thanks to Madam Jin and Miss Mu. There was even a child who could barely speak clearly, yet still held his bowl and stumbled through his gratitude. Hearing it, Steward Qin felt something warm press against his chest.

Each porridge shed had prepared two pots. The firewood burned fiercely to hasten the cooking, yet even so, they could hardly keep up with the speed at which the people came to receive porridge.

Most of the people who received Laba porridge gave up their places in line and stood by the street corners, cradling their bowls as they began to eat. For a time, several streets were filled with the fragrance of porridge. The people drank as they chatted with one another, laughter rising continuously, as though the entire city of Jingling had been warmed by this single bowl.

Within the Cao Residence, the atmosphere was just as lively.

The male and female guests were in no hurry to take their seats for the banquet. Instead, they all urged Cao Yunnian and Madam Jin to change into the clothes Mu Yunyao had prepared. Everyone knew that Mu Yunyao’s embroidery skills were superb; even the New Year’s tribute had been completed by her over three painstaking months. Now that they had a chance to admire her craftsmanship, naturally, no one wished to miss it—especially since this was the first time she had made men’s clothing.

When Cao Yunnian and Madam Jin emerged after changing, the previously lively hall fell suddenly silent.

Cao Yunnian wore a robe of deep navy blue. Dark, mysterious patterns were embroidered along the shoulders and collar, while a cluster of noble orchids adorned the hem. The orchids were so lifelike that, with each step he took, they seemed to gently unfurl their leaves. There was an indescribable scholarly elegance to them, making Cao Yunnian appear nearly ten years younger.

Madam Jin, beside him, was even more striking. Her dress was ice blue, embroidered with clusters of pale pink peonies that climbed from the hem to her waist. The design perfectly concealed the curve of her belly, so she did not appear heavy or ungainly at all. Instead, she carried an added air of grace and noble splendor. Most distinctive of all were the two deep navy butterflies embroidered beside the peonies. Their wings were spread as they danced lightly around the flowers.

Viewed separately, each outfit was already magnificent to the extreme. Seen together, however, they gave the impression that the deep navy butterflies on Madam Jin’s dress had flown from the orchids on Cao Yunnian’s robe.

The governor’s wife looked at them for a long while before suddenly sighing in admiration. “Butterflies lingering over flowers. Lord Cao and Madam Jin are indeed a loving couple.”

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 154

Chapter 154: A Heart Still in Mourning

Cao Yunnian could not help laughing aloud. He reached out, his palm full of tenderness, and gently stroked Madam Jin’s belly. “This is the first child between Madam and me. Naturally, I wish I could hold him in my palms and place him at the very tip of my heart to cherish him… Ah! The child kicked me! Madam, did you feel that? He kicked me!”

Cao Yunnian’s eyes widened, wonder spreading across his face as his smile refused to fade.

Watching him, Madam Jin felt her heart soften. “That is the child greeting his father. Speaking of which, in a while, I should begin preparing some clothes for the child…”

“You must not tire yourself, Madam. I remember that Concubine Zhou is quite skilled with needlework. She has little to occupy her on ordinary days. Why not have her prepare some?”

Madam Jin smiled and nodded, though a glimmer of satisfaction passed through her eyes. Since Concubine Wang was gone, Concubine Zhou’s arrogance had grown rather unchecked. This would be a fitting opportunity to press her down a little, so she might learn what it meant to restrain herself. “Then in two days, I shall send someone to inform her.”

Soon, the guests who had received invitations arrived at the Cao Residence one after another.

On the men’s side, when the guests saw Cao Yunnian personally receive them, they could not help but feel secretly relieved. It seemed Cao Yunnian and Madam Jin valued Mu Yunyao greatly. Fortunately, the gifts they had prepared this time were sufficiently generous.

On the women’s side, however, it was Mu Yunyao who stood outside to receive the guests. Madam Jin was with child, and as the months had grown heavier, it was only reasonable that she would not come out to greet everyone in person. Yet for Mu Yunyao to stand in her place carried an unmistakable implication.

Cao Yunnian and Madam Jin were clearly treating her as their own daughter. From this day on, she would be a young lady of the Cao Residence—someone they could no longer afford to offend lightly.

Many silently sighed over it. Mu Yunyao could be said to have overturned her fate in a single morning, flying from an ordinary sparrow onto a high branch. Though one could not say she had become a phoenix, at the very least, she could now be called a peacock. It was an opportunity countless people longed for day and night, yet might never obtain.

Whatever they thought inwardly, no one was foolish enough to let their true feelings show. Every face was bright with congratulatory cheer.

The guests politely exchanged greetings with Mu Yunyao. After a few words of courtesy, they entered the hall and took their seats. Once seated, they could not help observing her in secret, and many nodded inwardly. No wonder Madam Jin held Mu Yunyao in such regard. Her composed and graceful bearing alone was something many families could not cultivate even after years of effort.

After all the female guests had been welcomed into the Cao Residence, Mu Yunyao first stepped forward and curtsied. Only then did she withdraw to the rear and support Madam Jin as she came out.

As soon as Madam Jin appeared, the ladies rose and offered their greetings. After another round of polite exchanges, everyone returned to their seats.

“Many thanks to all the madams and young ladies for coming to today’s banquet,” Madam Jin said. “Once the kinship ceremony is completed later, Yunyao will also be my daughter. In the future, I hope you will all look after her and offer her guidance.”

“Congratulations, Madam. Yunyao is obedient and considerate, and she observes propriety so well. Even if we wished to offer guidance, we would be hard-pressed to find any fault.”

“Miss Mu is pleasing at first glance. With Madam’s careful teaching in the future, she will surely grow even more lovely and graceful.”

As praise came one after another, Mu Yunyao lowered her head slightly. A faint blush rose on her face, lending her a bashful softness that made her even more endearing. Madam Jin kept holding her hand throughout, the closeness between them plain without needing a single word.

Before long, Yin Hong entered and reported, “Madam, Miss, the auspicious hour has arrived. It is time to go to the front courtyard.”

Madam Jin rose and nodded lightly to the gathered guests. “Everyone, please come forward to observe the ceremony.”

“Of course. How could we miss such a moment?”

Madam Jin patted Mu Yunyao’s hand, signaling for her to go change first. Mu Yunyao curtsied before withdrawing.

In the rear courtyard, Su Qing hurried forward when she saw Mu Yunyao arrive. “Yao’er, how was it?” Though Madam Jin had given repeated assurances, Mu Yunyao’s origins were still plain for all to see. Su Qing had worried that while Yunyao greeted the guests, someone might deliberately make things difficult for her.

“Mother, do not worry. Everything went smoothly. Nothing happened.”

“That is good. The auspicious hour is nearly here. Hurry and change your clothes.” Su Qing had looked over the garments for quite some time and felt the red gauze dress was the most splendid, so she brought it over directly.

Mu Yunyao stroked the red gauze dress at her side, hesitation flickering through her expression. “Mother, although it has been more than a year since Father passed away, I still do not wish to wear red.”

Su Qing paused, and a trace of sorrow crossed her eyes. “Our Dali Dynasty does value filial piety, but the rites are not considered overly strict. Among ordinary people, observing mourning for one year is already sufficient.”

Mu Yunyao shook her head. “That may be true, but in great families where rules are strict, it would still become something others could criticize. I shall wear the light purple one instead. I believe Madam Jin will understand.”

“…Very well. We shall do as you wish. Your father would surely be moved to know you have such filial devotion.” Mu Cheng, if your spirit truly watches from above, then protect Yao’er. Let the road ahead be safe and peaceful for her. Do not let her suffer as bitterly as she did in her previous life.

After Mu Yunyao changed, she carefully chose her jewelry. Just as she finished dressing, Si Qin came in to pass along the message. “Miss, Madam Jin has sent someone to urge you.”

“I understand. Mother, let us go.”

In the main hall of the front courtyard, all the guests had already taken their seats. Cao Yunnian had just finished speaking at length in praise of Mu Yunyao and, unsurprisingly, received another wave of approving compliments.

He was about to have someone invite Mu Yunyao forward when a guard hurried in. “Reporting to Lord Cao: Governor Zhang and the governor’s wife have arrived. They are alighting at the entrance now.”

Cao Yunnian’s face lit up. “I will go to receive them at once.”

The guests’ expressions became even more delighted. There were not many opportunities in ordinary times to see Governor Zhang and his wife. Attending today’s banquet had certainly not been in vain.

Very soon, Governor Zhang and the governor’s wife were escorted inside. Everyone exchanged greetings and courtesies once more. It took nearly two quarters of an hour before calm returned to the hall.

The governor’s wife wore a warm smile as she turned toward Madam Jin. “I am also very fond of that girl Yunyao. She is gentle by nature and exceptionally filial. You are truly blessed.”

“Is that not so? These past two days, I have nearly laughed aloud even in my dreams. Since Madam has come today for the kinship ceremony, I must be shameless and ask you for a gift on Yao’er’s behalf.”

The governor’s wife laughed. “It was prepared long ago. Where is the need for you to ask?”

“Then I shall first thank Madam on Yao’er’s behalf. Later, I will have her offer you tea.”

“In that case, I shall not stand on ceremony.”

When the auspicious hour arrived, Cao Yunnian rose and once again thanked the guests. Then he had Mu Yunyao invited forward.

Everyone could not help looking toward the entrance. They saw Mu Yunyao enter slowly with Su Qing at her side.

She wore an upper robe of Bixia gauze patterned like ancient mist, paired with a violet gauze skirt embroidered in emerald tones. Light purple was clearly a cool, restrained color, yet on her it seemed to gain a fresh vitality. As she walked, the gauze skirt moved in soft waves, stirring the thin outer layer of mist-like fabric so that she appeared as graceful as drifting clouds and flowing rosy light.

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 153

Chapter 153: Cao Yunnian’s Stroke of Fortune

Mu Yunyao looked toward Su Qing. Seeing her mother give the faintest nod, the last thread of hesitation in her heart slipped away. She rose, took up the untouched cup of tea on the table, walked to Madam Jin, and knelt.

Holding the teacup high above her head, she said in a clear voice, “Yunyao pays respects to God Mother. Please accept this tea.”

Madam Jin quickly took the cup and drank a mouthful. The smile at the corners of her lips could no longer be restrained. “Good. Yao’er, quickly rise.”

As she spoke, she helped Mu Yunyao up with both hands. Then she slipped a pair of jade bangles from her own wrist, removed a gold hairpin from her hair, and carefully placed them on Mu Yunyao.

Mu Yunyao accepted them with a bright smile and did not offer any distant words of refusal. Now that this kinship had been acknowledged, there was no need to remain as reserved as before. “Thank you, God Mother.”

Madam Jin held her hand affectionately, the delight in her eyes soft and sincere. “Now I may be considered to have both a son and a daughter.”

Mu Yunyao glanced toward Madam Jin’s rounded belly, then deliberately put on a troubled expression. “Earlier, I even joked with Madam that when your child was born, I would ask you for a large red envelope. Now it seems I will not only fail to receive one, but must prepare one myself as a first-meeting gift for my younger brother.”

“Do not worry. That red envelope will still be yours. In the future, when your younger brother grows up, he can obey your instructions and run errands for you.”

Mu Yunyao’s eyes curved with delight. “That would be wonderful. In that case, I shall prepare an especially generous first-meeting gift.”

Su Qing, who was seated to one side, could not help smiling. “Since you are acknowledging each other as kin, Yao’er should also offer Lord Cao a cup of tea. Why not set a table at Buxian Tower tomorrow? We can treat it as a small celebration.”

Madam Jin quickly shook her head. “I intend to treat Yao’er as my own daughter. Naturally, we cannot settle the matter so casually. Today, I only came to discuss it with Younger Sister Su. Since Yao’er is willing to call me God Mother, I must make her status proper and secure. Once I return, I will have someone choose an auspicious date, then send invitations to all the notable families in Jingling City. Only after the rites are formally performed and a banquet is held can it be considered fitting.”

“This… would that not be too ostentatious?”

“How could it be ostentatious? I only fear the occasion will be too modest and wrong Yao’er. She is my God Daughter. It is only right that she be treated with such regard.”

Hearing Madam Jin speak this way, warmth gathered quietly in Mu Yunyao’s heart. This time, she accepted this Godmother with true sincerity. “Then everything shall be arranged according to God Mother’s wishes.”

“Good. Rest assured, God Mother will not let you suffer any grievance.”

Mu Yunyao smiled, holding Madam Jin’s hand in one of hers and Su Qing’s in the other. “Then should I begin preparing my clothes now? When the day comes, I must dress beautifully.”

“Our Yao’er is so lovely that she looks beautiful in anything.”

Mu Yunyao lightly swayed their hands. “Both my mothers only know how to tease me. I shall stop speaking with you now. I am going to the kitchen to see what has been prepared, then personally cook a few dishes to show filial respect to my two mothers.”

“In that case, we shall be blessed with good food today.”

Mu Yunyao personally prepared a full table of dishes. The meal was lively and warm, with laughter lingering beneath the lamplight.

When Madam Jin was about to leave, Mu Yunyao had charcoal braziers and fox-fur robes placed in her carriage. She repeatedly reminded Yin Hong to take careful care of her, and only then did she watch the carriage depart.

In neighboring Jinxiu Garden, Steward Qin heard of the matter and could not help curling his lips. “That Cao Yunnian truly stumbled into great fortune.”

Yu Yi had just finished a bowl of ginger tea. Its fragrance still lingered between his lips and teeth, and he was savoring the aftertaste when Steward Qin’s remark reached his ears. Curiosity immediately drew him over. “Steward Qin, what do you mean?”

“Cao Yunnian relied on Madam Jin to rise smoothly through the ranks. In the future, perhaps even Yue Wang will have to show him some respect. If that is not great fortune, what is?”

Yu Yi’s brow furrowed, the words circling around without settling. “Even if Cao Yunnian becomes powerful—even if he rises to the first rank—before Yue Wang, he is still an official. How could Yue Wang have to respect him?”

“Madam Jin has recognized Miss Mu as her God Daughter. That means Cao Yunnian is Miss Mu’s God Father. Is that clear enough?”

“God Daughter, God Father, Miss Mu, Yue Wang…” The more Yu Yi tried to connect the words, the more tangled his expression became. “The more you explain, the less I understand.”

Steward Qin’s gaze sharpened. He picked up an account book and threw it at him. “Get out. Just looking at you vexes me.”

Yu Yi caught the account book in one hand and flipped it open at random. When he saw the figures recorded within, his eyes widened slightly despite himself. “Steward Qin, your hands are very full these days. When the New Year comes, should you not prepare a red envelope for me as well? This past half year, I have made no fewer trips between Beijiang and Jingling City.”

“If you say one more useless word, I will give you a slap instead.”

“You are already advanced in years. Why is your temper still so fierce? Can you not speak properly?”

As soon as the words left his mouth, Yu Yi slipped out of the room. Behind him, Steward Qin snorted coldly for quite some time.

Considering Madam Jin’s thorough way of handling matters, as well as the affection between her and Miss Mu, the ceremony to recognize Miss Mu as her Goddaughter would surely be held with great fanfare. The congratulatory gift would need to be chosen with care.

Madam Jin ultimately chose the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, the Laba Festival. She also decided to draw on her own savings to distribute porridge throughout Jingling City to accumulate blessings for Mu Yunyao.

When Mu Yunyao heard of this, she specially took out eight thousand taels of silver to buy rice and prepare porridge, so that on Laba day, she could join Madam Jin in giving alms throughout Jingling City.

With rice purchased and people hired in advance, the news that Madam Jin intended to recognize Mu Yunyao as her Goddaughter quickly spread through Jingling City. Many people were not surprised. Madam Jin and Mu Yunyao had always been close; this acknowledgment of kinship merely made their relationship more secure.

After hearing the news, the ladies of the various residences sighed for a while, then turned their thoughts to what congratulatory gifts they ought to send.

Cao Yunnian had outstanding political achievements and was clearly on the verge of promotion. Madam Jin held a ninth-rank imperial title, and Mu Yunyao had received rewards from the Emperor. None of the three could be taken lightly. Before sending gifts, each household naturally had to inquire carefully on all sides. If they could choose something suited to their tastes, that would be best.

On Laba day, the Cao Residence was swept and arranged until everything looked newly refreshed. Madam Jin rose early to oversee the preparations. Cao Yunnian, who had not treated the matter with quite such gravity at first, gradually became affected by the atmosphere as well. He carefully trimmed his beard before the mirror, then brought over two new outfits for Madam Jin to help him choose from.

Only then did Madam Jin’s expression brighten. As she personally helped him change, she said softly, “This is my fault. These past two days, I only thought about arranging the banquet and actually forgot to instruct someone to prepare a few new sets of clothes for you, my lord.”

“Madam is carrying a child. Your body is heavy now. You and the child are what matter most. These two sets are newly made as well; there is nothing improper about them.”

Madam Jin smiled as she smoothed his robes, then replaced his pouch with one she had sewn herself. Only after that did her gaze ease. “Since my lord places such importance on Yao’er, this God Daughter, once our child is born, he will surely enjoy endless blessings.”

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 152

Chapter 152: Madam Jin Takes an Adopted Daughter

Madam Jin took the New Year’s tribute away and immediately had Cao Yunnian deliver it to Governor Zhang’s Residence.

When Governor Zhang saw the tribute, his face flushed with excitement. He clapped Cao Yunnian on the shoulder and repeatedly ordered people to invite the finest master craftsman. No matter what, this embroidery had to be mounted with the utmost meticulousness. “Brother Cao, rest assured. I will clearly explain the origin of this embroidery. The credit that belongs to you and Madam Jin will certainly not be omitted.”

Cao Yunnian said nothing, yet there was a lightness in his step when he returned to his residence. Supporting Madam Jin as they strolled through the garden, he told her all that had happened that day.

Previously, Concubine Wang’s provocation had indeed stirred a knot of displeasure in his heart. But one fit of anger from him had made Madam Jin grieve for several days, even to the point of saying she would sever ties with the Jin family in Xiling. Later, when he personally heard how arrogant Concubine Wang had been behind their backs, he realized he had strayed into a blind alley of his own making. It had taken him many days of careful coaxing before Madam Jin finally softened.

Afterward, seeing how difficult it was for her to carry two lives in one body, his earlier conduct weighed on him all the more. These days, whenever official affairs allowed, he returned to keep Madam Jin company. The affection between husband and wife had quietly deepened.

Hearing Cao Yunnian praise the New Year’s tribute, Madam Jin could not help mentioning Mu Yunyao. “That girl is not only intelligent and refined, but also steady and methodical in all she does. You do not know this, but over these days, every time I went to see her, she seemed thinner than before. It truly made one’s heart ache to look at her.”

“Considering how much effort she put into completing this New Year’s tribute, she must have labored day and night. Strictly speaking, most of the good fortune we have had these past six months has come thanks to her. I was thinking that, with the New Year approaching, we ought to prepare a generous gift and properly thank her.”

“This gift naturally must be sent. But look at Niyun Pavilion and Buxian Tower now. Which one is not earning money hand over fist? How much would we need to send for it to count as generous?”

“Then what does Madam think we should do?”

“Su Qing and I are of similar age, and I have always liked Yunyao very much. In my heart, I have long regarded her as a close junior. Over this past half year, we have benefited from her more than once. I was thinking that I might as well recognize her as my God Daughter. From now on, we sisters can look after each other as family. That way, if anything happens to her in Jingling City, it will be more proper and justified for us to take care of her.”

Cao Yunnian thought for a moment. “Madam’s idea is excellent. However, Mu Yunyao has only just received imperial rewards. Niyun Pavilion and Buxian Tower both hang golden signboards personally bestowed by the Emperor, and even the governor’s wife treats her with great regard. If we rashly recognize her as our God Daughter, might she think we have ulterior motives?”

“If it were anyone else, I truly would not dare say this. But with Mu Yunyao, I can be certain she absolutely will not think that way. That child has a mind as clear and delicate as carved jade. She handles matters thoroughly and thoughtfully, and she has treated me with genuine sincerity. Just take the child in my womb. Without her, I fear I would not have been able to keep him.”

Seeing Madam Jin’s expression dim with the thought, Cao Yunnian hurried to comfort her. “Since Madam is so certain, I naturally have no objections. A few days ago, when we invited a physician to check your pulse, it was roughly confirmed that the child in your womb is male. Now, if we recognize Mu Yunyao as our God Daughter, we may be considered to have both son and daughter.”

Madam Jin smiled. “Then tomorrow I shall go to the Su Residence and discuss this properly with Su Qing, then ask Yunyao’s opinion as well. Although she will be a God Daughter, I still want to treat her like my own daughter. When she reaches coming of age and marries, we must help her choose a good family and prepare a generous dowry.”

“Very well. Everything shall be as Madam says.”

That day, Mu Yunyao was still lazily curled up on the soft couch when Si Qin came in quickly. “Greetings, Miss. Madam Jin has arrived. She is speaking with Madam now. Madam sent this servant to invite Miss over.”

“It is snowing lightly today. The weather is cold and the roads are slippery. Why has Madam Jin come over?” Mu Yunyao rose. Jin Lan had already brought over a cloak edged with rabbit fur. After putting it on, she carried an umbrella and made her way to the warm room in the front courtyard.

Madam Jin was speaking with Su Qing, her face full of smiles. Hearing Si Qi announce Yunyao’s arrival, she immediately looked toward the doorway.

The curtain was lifted, and Mu Yunyao stepped inside with light, graceful steps. She wore a cloak embroidered with immortal crane patterns and edged with rabbit fur. As she walked, the red pomegranate blossoms embroidered on the skirt beneath could be faintly glimpsed. The moment she entered, she carried with her a brilliant smile, making those who saw her unconsciously lift the corners of their lips as well.

Mu Yunyao handed her cloak to Si Qi, then stepped forward and curtsied. “Greetings, Madam Jin. Greetings, Mother.”

“Quickly, rise.” Madam Jin gestured for Mu Yunyao to come forward. Feeling that her fingers were somewhat cold, she quickly placed the hand warmer she held into Yunyao’s hands before finally relaxing. “Seeing that you look much more lively these past two days, I can finally be at ease.”

“Madam has been sending supplements over for me, and Mother stews them for me every day. I am worried that in a few more days, I shall become as round as a ball.”

Round as a ball?

Madam Jin was amused by Mu Yunyao and laughed for quite a while before finally stopping. “I came today because there is an important matter I wish to discuss with Younger Sister Su and you.”

“Has something gone wrong with the New Year’s tribute?” Mu Yunyao’s heart immediately tightened.

“That New Year’s tribute is so good that even the pickiest person would likely be unable to find the slightest flaw. How could there be a problem with it?” Madam Jin said, then looked toward Su Qing. “Younger Sister Su, we have known each other for half a year now. After spending so much time together, you should also understand my temperament. I will speak plainly.”

Su Qing could not help feeling somewhat nervous. “Madam, please speak.”

“During this period, Yunyao has helped me again and again. Whether it was the butterfly-attracting dress at the beginning, the rose fragrance dew recipe that later helped me earn a great deal of silver, diagnosing the hidden problem with my health and helping untie a knot in my heart that had lasted for years, or the recent credit from spreading the embroidery techniques and working day and night to complete the New Year’s tribute… I am endlessly grateful to Yunyao.”

Seeing that Su Qing was anxious and about to decline, Madam Jin held her hand and gently soothed her before continuing. “And with you, Younger Sister, I also feel a natural affinity. These past few months, if not for your wholehearted care, I do not know how my child and I would have fared. I remember all of these kindnesses. If I were to send gifts, no matter how generous they were, they could never express even a fraction of my gratitude. So I was thinking, why not recognize Yunyao as my God Daughter? From now on, we can look after each other like true sisters, and you will have someone to rely on here in Jingling City.”

“You… Madam wishes to recognize Yao’er as your God Daughter?” Su Qing was rather surprised.

“Yes. That is precisely why I came today—to discuss it with you. I only wonder whether you can bear to part with her.”

Joy rose in Su Qing’s heart. “If there is one more person to love Yao’er, how could I be unwilling?”

Madam Jin immediately smiled. “That is good. Such an obedient daughter—honestly, I was afraid you would be reluctant to share her. Yao’er, what do you think?”

Chapter 151: The Three Winter Months When One Cannot Wake

After Madam Jin left with the New Year’s tribute, Mu Yunyao felt as though a burden had slipped from her shoulders. After supper, she went to bed early and slept until the sun was high the next morning, yet still refused to rise from beneath the covers.

Su Qing came in carrying a bowl of eight-treasure rice. Seeing her daughter curled into the quilt, she could not help stepping forward and pinching her cheek. “What hour is it already, and you still will not get up? Nan’er and A’Mao have swept the courtyard once over.”

Mu Yunyao kept her eyes closed, feigning sleep, but the corners of her lips betrayed her, curving upward. Su Qing pinched her cheek again. “You wicked girl. Last night you were clamoring for eight-treasure rice, and I brought it over as soon as it was done. Hurry and stop pretending. Wash up and eat, or I shall take it out and give it to Nan’er and A’Mao.”

Mu Yunyao immediately opened her eyes and threw herself into Su Qing’s arms, putting on an extremely aggrieved air. “Ever since Nan’er and A’Mao came, Mother no longer dotes on me!”

Su Qing gathered her in with a smile. “What nonsense. If Mother did not dote on you, I would have dragged this lazy worm out of bed long ago.”

“An ancient saying goes: spring brings drowsiness, autumn brings weariness, summer makes one nod off—and in the three winter months, one simply cannot wake. I am merely following the wisdom of the ancients and cultivating my health.”

Su Qing, hearing her solemn nonsense, was caught between laughter and helplessness. She wanted to chide her, but when she remembered how Yunyao had spent so many days and nights rushing to finish the New Year’s tribute, the words would not leave her mouth.

At this moment, Mu Yunyao had only just woken and crawled out from the warm quilt. Her whole body seemed soft and warm as she lay across Su Qing’s knees, carrying a rare hint of girlish dependence that made one’s heart soften at the sight.

“Get up quickly and wash your face. Eat something first. If you still feel sleepy after eating, you may go back to bed.”

Mu Yunyao could not help curving her eyes into crescents, her clear gaze brimming with laughter. “I knew it. In this world, Mother loves me most.”

“You foolish child. Mother has only one daughter. If I do not love you, who else would I love?”

Mu Yunyao’s smile deepened. She rolled lightly against Su Qing’s knees before finally getting up to dress.

Su Qing helped her smooth out her skirt. Looking at the pale green magnolia flowers embroidered on her sleeves, she smiled. “From what Mother sees, you have grown quite a bit taller over the past half year. Once spring comes, these old clothes will likely no longer fit.”

Mu Yunyao stroked the dress she wore with unusual care. “This blue-jade magnolia gauze skirt was made by Mother’s own hands. No matter when I wear it, it will always fit. How could it not?”

“You only know how to say sweet things to coax Mother.” Su Qing wished for nothing more than for her daughter to grow taller and plumper. If the clothes no longer fit, they could simply make new ones.

“Although the trouble in Mother’s hands has improved somewhat, they still cannot bear too much strain. I cannot bear to let you spend your days holding needle and thread to sew clothes. Having this one set is enough.”

Su Qing only smiled and said nothing more, giving her no opening to continue. She watched with gentle eyes as Yunyao washed up.

Mu Yunyao, however, had already made up her mind. Because she had been so busy embroidering, she had not prepared winter clothes for herself at all. She had meant to let Jin Lan and the others find time to make her two sets, never expecting Su Qing to take up the needle herself. Now that she had some free time, she naturally would not allow her mother to tire herself again.

After eating a bowl of steaming eight-treasure rice, Mu Yunyao felt warmth seep through her from head to toe. At last free of urgent work, she wanted nothing more than to do absolutely nothing. Wrapped in a warm fox-fur cloak, she sat beside the brazier, leaning against the soft couch as she slowly drank tea.

Su Qing looked at her lazy, boneless posture and found it both exasperating and endearing. In the end, she simply let her be.

Jin Lan and Jin Qiao came in. They remained near the outer room for a little while, waiting for the chill on their bodies to disperse before approaching Mu Yunyao. “Miss, your room is still the most comfortable. I do not know what has happened these past two days, but the cold has become terribly sharp. Judging from the gloomy sky, it may snow again tomorrow. In previous years, Jiangnan was never this cold.”

Mu Yunyao poured two cups of tea and handed them over. “Drink some tea to warm yourselves.”

The two accepted the cups with bright smiles. Jin Lan took a sip and sighed softly. “Thank you, Miss. If Steward Qin drank tea brewed by Miss, he would certainly stop praising me.”

“Then find time to practice your tea-brewing properly. Perhaps in the future I shall send you out to manage one of the Buxian Towers.”

Jin Lan hurriedly shook her head. “Miss, please do not tease this servant. I know very well how much ability I have. Running errands at Miss’s side is one thing. If I were sent to manage Buxian Tower, I would lose my bearings within two days.”

Mu Yunyao smiled, then looked toward Jin Qiao. “How is the matter I asked you to inquire about?”

“Replying to Miss, this servant went to ask Steward Qin. He said the group of embroiderers from Caiyue Pavilion has already been scattered to various places. In another day or two, there should be movement. Also, Tan Bawang has already been released. However, Master Tan personally took him back to Huai’an City. I heard he has grown terribly thin, as though he suffered quite a bit in prison.”

Mu Yunyao’s lips lifted slightly. “County Magistrate Zhao is upright by nature and has always handled matters with integrity. This time, it was clear he intended to investigate Tan Bawang properly, yet Tan Lin interfered and shifted the blame onto a few servants. His heart must not have been at ease. As the parent-official of Jingling City, if he wants to discipline one or two people, it is only a matter of a few words. It would be strange if Tan Bawang had not suffered.”

“Miss, this servant still thinks letting Tan Bawang return like this is far too easy on him.”

“Rest assured. Even if we do not seek out Tan Bawang, he will come back to seek us out. That Master Tan has managed Caiyue Pavilion for many years. He is not someone who willingly swallows a loss. At present, he needs something from us, so he lowers his stance. Once Caiyue Pavilion receives credit for spreading the embroidery techniques, he naturally will no longer place us in his eyes.”

Jin Lan and Jin Qiao could not help worrying. “Since Miss understands this, why did you still choose him? Spreading the embroidery techniques is such a good opportunity. No matter whom you chose, they would likely have rushed to agree.”

“There is a reason I chose him. If the grudge between us and Caiyue Pavilion were not impossible to untie, I would not have used him as the blade.”

“This servant does not fully understand, but hearing Miss say it, it sounds extremely formidable,” Jin Qiao said with a smile.

“If you do not understand, then think on it more. The two of you both have decent natural ability. What you lack is experience and breadth of vision. In the future, if you are willing to remain by my side and serve me, then watch more, listen more, and think more. If you are willing to stand on your own, whether it is Niyun Pavilion or Buxian Tower, I can grant you the position of shopkeeper.”

Jin Lan and Jin Qiao did not hesitate at all. They immediately curtsied to Mu Yunyao. “This servant is willing to serve Miss.”

Mu Yunyao smiled faintly. “Good. Since the two of you have resolved to remain by my side, I naturally will not treat you poorly.”

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 150

Chapter 150: Robbed Again?

With a matter that had weighed upon her heart resolved, Mu Yunyao ate an extra half bowl of rice-flour dumplings. Su Qing was delighted, her brows blooming with smiles as she ladled more soup for her daughter, yet she was also afraid Mu Yunyao might overeat. “If you still want more, Mother can make them again in a few days. You must not stuff yourself…”

No sooner had she spoken than she felt the words were not quite right, and quickly added, “But you must eat enough as well. These past two days, you look thinner again.”

Mu Yunyao blinked, lifted a hand to touch her cheek, then turned to Jin Lan. “Have I grown thinner these past two days?” During this time, Su Qing had been changing dishes every day to nourish her. Even half of the ginseng Steward Qin had sent had been stewed into soup. Mu Yunyao felt her cheeks had rounded out quite a bit.

Jin Lan hurriedly nodded. “Miss has been working so hard every day. Of course you have grown thinner.” Miss was slender to begin with, and now she spent every day seated before the embroidery frame. Her wrists and neck often ached so badly that she could scarcely lift them. Her wrists and fingers, especially, had to be warmed with hot compresses every evening; otherwise, they would certainly swell the next day. The sight pained the heart.

“Very well.” Knowing they were only worried about her, Mu Yunyao did not argue further. After drinking half a bowl of soup, she returned to her room and resumed embroidering the New Year tribute.

Day by day, time passed.

Outside Yuxi City, a merchant caravan, after nearly twenty days on the road, finally saw the city gates from afar. Just as they could not help letting out a breath of relief, the thunder of hooves rolled closer. Masked bandits appeared as abruptly as they had the previous time. After seizing all the goods, they sped away without delay.

By the time the merchants managed to flee to the gates of Yuxi City, there was not a single copper coin left on them.

The soldiers guarding the city widened their eyes at the sight of them. “It is you again? What, robbed again?” The last time they had been robbed of tea, the caravan owner had insisted he did not believe in ill fortune and would go back to transport another batch. At the time, the soldiers thought he had spoken in anger. They had not expected him truly to make another trip—only to be robbed again.

The caravan owner sat on the ground and wailed. “We reported this last time! Why have the upright officials still not caught those bandits?”

The gate soldier could not help feeling some sympathy. He stepped forward and helped the man up. “Do not be so stubborn. That gang of bandits is fierce. The authorities simply cannot catch them. In the future, hire more guards to travel with your caravan. At least that might help somewhat. Otherwise, stop coming to Yuxi City to do business. This place is so poor even birds will not lay eggs here. Even if you brought tea leaves, no one could afford to buy them.”

“But my old rival sent tea leaves to Yuxi City before and said he made a great sum of silver.”

“Then you were likely deceived. These days, who still comes here to do business?”

The caravan owner wept for a long while, then pawned the gold ring on his hand and barely managed to let the caravan stay in Yuxi City for one night. The next day, he led his people away. As they departed, the soldiers at the gate shook their heads at their backs, feeling only that these people were unlucky to the extreme.

Unexpectedly, nearly twenty days later, another caravan approached Yuxi City. This time, they were even closer to the gate. Just as they were about to enter the city, bandits seemed to descend from the sky. In less than a quarter of an hour, they swept away every last piece of cargo and vanished.

Only after the bandits had left did the soldiers guarding the city creep out from the gate in fear. Seeing someone in the caravan weeping bitterly, one of them hurried forward. “Eh? You are not the Wang family caravan?” He had thought the unlucky lot who had already been robbed twice had come back again. He had not expected a different group this time.

At the mention of the Wang family caravan, the merchants began crying even harder. “The Wang family caravan went back and said they had earned a great sum of silver in Yuxi City. That was why we followed, thinking we could open a trade route here. Who would have thought we would be robbed before even entering the city? Why is Heaven so unfair, treating that Wang fellow so kindly?”

The gate soldier thought for a moment. “You and the Wang family are rivals, are you not?”

“Yes. Our Zhang family and the Wang family cannot stand under the same sky!”

The soldier sighed. “Ah, then that explains it.” Since they were irreconcilable rivals, who else would they cheat, if not you? Still, the bandits around Yuxi City had never been quite this rampant before. Now they came around every few days. Could it be that they had grown addicted to robbing people?

Mu Yunyao knew nothing of the liveliness taking place outside Yuxi City, thousands of li away. At this moment, she was accompanying Madam Jin as they examined the embroidery in her hand. “Madam, what do you think?”

Madam Jin looked at the embroidery spread across the table, her face flushed with excitement. “Yunyao, I truly do not know how to describe it. Good. It is truly excellent!”

The embroidery before them was nine chi long and five chi wide. Along the borders, auspicious clouds had been embroidered in bright yellow thread. In the center, on a red ground, four golden characters—Fortune, Longevity, Peace, and Health—shone with brilliance. At a single glance, the work appeared majestic and profound. Against the auspicious clouds, it seemed like a mountain standing among the heavens, carrying an imposing dignity.

Mu Yunyao let out a long breath of relief. “Hearing Madam say that it is good sets my heart at ease. I was afraid my skill would prove insufficient and delay the New Year tribute to His Majesty.”

“Do not be so modest. I dare say that throughout the entire Dali Dynasty, there is no second person whose embroidery skill can compare with yours.”

“Madam praises me too highly.”

Madam Jin studied it carefully for the time it took to drink a cup of tea before finally withdrawing her gaze with reluctance. “Yunyao, you have worked hard these days. I heard you did not even celebrate your birthday, and devoted yourself entirely to this tribute…”

“I am still young. What need is there to celebrate a birthday? Besides, Madam even had Sister Yinhong send me a set of jewelry. I have never seen rubies of such pure color before. Simply looking at them made me unwilling to part with them, let alone wear them on my head.”

The fifteenth day of the tenth month was Mu Yunyao’s birthday. She herself had never intended to hold any celebration. That day, she had merely eaten a bowl of hand-pulled noodles made by her mother, and already felt more than satisfied. To her, nothing could have made her happier than that bowl of noodles.

Su Qing nodded as well. “That is right. Madam, in your present condition, you still remembered Yunyao’s birthday. You truly spoil her.” Between Su Qing and Madam Jin, there was already something of a sworn-sister intimacy, so their speech no longer carried so many restraints.

Madam Jin, however, gazed at Mu Yunyao with a face full of smiles. “If I could truly spoil her rotten, I would gather ten or eight sets of ruby jewelry and send them all over. This girl Yunyao is simply too sensible. Looking at her makes one’s heart ache.”

As she spoke, her gaze swept over Mu Yunyao’s hands. She gently pulled them over and examined them closely. Her wrists and fingers were slightly red and swollen, especially the three fingers that held the embroidery needle. The tips were red and bore a thin layer of callus. Compared with the pale, scallion-white fingers of her left hand, they looked all the more distressing. “For the next while, you must rest properly. Do not leave behind any hidden injury.”

Mu Yunyao smiled and nodded. “Madam, do not worry. In two days, it will be fine.” Injuries on her body recovered extremely quickly. Moreover, she applied excellent medicinal ointment every day. In a few days, her hands would be as they had been before. Otherwise, she would never dare push herself so desperately.

Having lived once more, she cherished her own body more than anyone.

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 149

Chapter 149: The Strangely Guileless Clever Man

Seeing that Mu Yunyao did not mean to blame him, Liu Liang’s whole body finally eased. “Yes, Master. You will not punish Qi Ming?”

“Why should I punish him? I would dearly like a few more people like him.” Mu Yunyao’s face was full of laughter. “Jin Lan, later, prepare a red envelope of five hundred taels as well. Have Liu Liang deliver it to Qi Ming together with Steward Qin’s.” Faults must be punished, but merit must also be rewarded. She could not allow capable people to feel chilled.

“Yes, Miss.”

After Liu Liang withdrew, Mu Yunyao continued with the embroidery in her hands and asked Jin Lan to count the banknotes.

“Miss, altogether there are twenty-one thousand two hundred taels.”

Mu Yunyao nodded. “Take it to Mother. If she asks where the banknotes came from, say they are profits from Buxian Tower sent over by Steward Qin.”

“Yes, Miss.”

Once Jin Lan had gone out, Mu Yunyao laughed softly. If the price difference alone had yielded more than twenty thousand taels, then this time, Steward Qin must have prepared no small amount of ginger tea.

That day, Mu Yunyao had just risen when she felt the air carried a sharper chill than before. When Jin Lan entered, there was a hint of excitement on her face. “Miss, it is snowing outside. Though there is only a thin layer, it is especially lovely.”

Mu Yunyao paused slightly. “Counting the days, is today not precisely Xiaoxue—Little Snow? It has answered the season rather well.”

“Yes. Just now, this servant met Si Qin and heard that Madam is preparing rice-flour dumplings. She said that after eating rice-flour dumplings, one will not be frozen by the cold. This servant is truly fortunate today.” Madam had never treated them as outsiders. Each time she prepared something delicious, she would have some set aside for them as well. It warmed their hearts beyond words.

Warmth gathered in Mu Yunyao’s smile. “Just as well. I have not eaten rice-flour dumplings in quite some time, and I am craving them. Later, go tell Mother that I want lotus root and fresh pork filling.” To her mother, troublesome requests were not to be feared. What she feared was making something that her daughter wouldn’t like. Therefore, Mu Yunyao never hesitated when making such requests.

“Yes, Miss.”

Mu Yunyao was in good spirits, and even her embroidery seemed to move faster beneath her fingers.

Meanwhile, in Jinxiu Garden next door, the guests who had come to drink tea were all sighing in wonder. The scenery of Jinxiu Garden had already been beautiful enough, but now every place set aside for guests to drink tea had either hanging curtains or standing screens.

According to the different views, the patterns on the curtains and screens were all distinct. They echoed the surrounding scenery, refined and flawless, blending into a seamless whole. Now, with a light fall of snow drifting down, the garden gained another layer of dreamlike beauty, enough to intoxicate the mind and make one reluctant to leave.

Once word spread, many people came to Jinxiu Garden to admire the scenery. In winter, most places had turned bleak and bare, leaving people with few destinations. Now that there was Jinxiu Garden, with its beautiful views and the imperial plaque bestowed by the Emperor, it naturally became the first choice for leisure.

Steward Qin counted the silver that had come in, and his admiration for Mu Yunyao deepened further. Previously, he had worried that once winter arrived, the number of guests at Buxian Tower would drop sharply. Yet now, not only had the guests not decreased, they had increased instead; business was even livelier than in summer. In addition, Qi Ming, who had helped purchase grain earlier, had saved him a considerable sum. Steward Qin immediately decided that when the New Year came, he would certainly prepare a large red envelope and send it to Miss Mu.

Mu Yunyao found time to meet Qi Ming. The man was tall and strongly built, with an honest, simple smile. After entering and paying his respects, even his smile carried a touch of bashfulness.

“No need for so much ceremony. Sit.” Mu Yunyao studied Qi Ming. The smile on his face was entirely sincere, and even his eyes carried a guileless honesty. Not the slightest trace of pretense could be seen. A person like this had either worked deception into his very bones—or else he truly was honest by nature.

“Many thanks, Miss.” Qi Ming sat down somewhat stiffly. A large, tall man, yet he occupied only half the chair, making him look faintly comical.

“I am rather curious. How did it occur to you to buy extra grain and store it?”

At the question, Qi Ming quickly stood. “Reporting to Miss, I heard that you were buying grain to send to Yuexi. I thought that perhaps you might send another batch later. If grain prices rose after some time, buying again would cost you far more silver. It would be better to buy and store it now. That way, we would save money and time. Even if Miss ended up not needing the grain, we could still keep it awhile and sell it once the price rose.”

“You considered the matter quite thoroughly.” No wonder Liu Liang had asked for extra silver during that period; it must have been for this. Mu Yunyao studied Qi Ming carefully. No flaw could be found in either his expression or his words. Looking at him, one could only feel that every word came from genuine sincerity, making the heart feel strangely soothed. “What plans do you have for the future?”

Qi Ming quickly nodded. “This servant follows Miss. Whatever you order me to do, I shall do.”

Mu Yunyao smiled. After considering for a moment, she said, “Earlier, I had an idea, but there were no people under me who knew how to do business, so I never put it into action. Now that you are here, the timing is right. I wish to open a Yibao Pavilion, specializing in jewelry, rouge, face powder, and the like. How would it be if you served as its shopkeeper?”

“If Miss orders this servant to be shopkeeper, this servant will be shopkeeper.” Qi Ming nodded at once, without the slightest hesitation.

“Then have you thought about what ought to be done to make Yibao Pavilion famous, to let it become a golden signboard like Niyun Pavilion?”

Qi Ming frowned and pondered for a moment, then reached up and scratched his head. “This servant has one idea, but it feels somewhat treasonous.”

“Say it.”

The smile on Mu Yunyao’s lips deepened. In such a short time, he already had an idea?

“The Niyun Pavilion Miss created can already be said to be famous far and near. If Yibao Pavilion is to become like Niyun Pavilion, then it can only step on Niyun Pavilion’s shoulders to climb upward.” Qi Ming carefully observed Mu Yunyao’s expression. Seeing that she was not angry, he let out a heavy breath of relief.

The smile at Mu Yunyao’s lips grew deeper still. “Explain carefully. How should Yibao Pavilion step on Niyun Pavilion’s shoulders to climb upward?”

“This servant has privately heard many people speak of Niyun Pavilion with jealousy. It is only because Niyun Pavilion bears a signboard personally bestowed by the Emperor that they dare not openly oppose it. If Yibao Pavilion dares to step forward, it will certainly receive secret support from many people. In this way, matters will become much smoother without anyone noticing. Later, once Niyun Pavilion opens throughout the entire Dali Dynasty, Yibao Pavilion can also bloom everywhere along with it.”

Mu Yunyao laughed, her eyes bright with unusual brilliance. “Good. Since that is so, go handle it. Report directly to Liu Liang how much silver you need, and I will have him give it to you.” She truly had not expected Qi Ming’s idea to coincide so perfectly with her own. Originally, she had planned to wait until several more Niyun Pavilions had opened before sparing the energy to establish Yibao Pavilion. Now, with him to help, there was no need to wait. In this way, she had taken another step closer to her goal.

Qi Ming had truly come at exactly the right time.

Qi Ming nodded. “Yes, Miss.”

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 148

Chapter 148: A Talent for Making Silver

Yu Yi had never seen Steward Qin wear such an expression before. Curiosity stirred in him despite himself. “Steward Qin, what exactly happened?”

Steward Qin swept him an irritated glance. Then, as though a little spirit had returned to him, he asked, “After you gave both letters to His Highness, what expression did he have?”

“His Highness’s expression?” Yu Yi scratched his head and thought hard for quite a while. “You have served His Highness for so many years. Has his face not always been cold and indifferent? What expression could there be?”

Steward Qin had been full of expectation, but at that answer, his patience vanished. He waved him off in frustration. “Get out. You and that boy Yu Heng are the same—useless all day long.”

“Who says so? Steward Cheng even praised me before.”

“That was because his old eyes have grown dim. Move aside. Do not stand here. Looking at you vexes me.”

Yu Yi rubbed his nose and headed straight for the kitchen. He had heard there was still quite a bit of ginger tea there. He had to hurry and taste it. These days, traveling back and forth between Jiling City and Yuexi, he had only heard of ginger tea but had never actually seen what it was. His curiosity had nearly climbed into his throat. Now, at last, he had a chance to behold its true appearance.

Steward Qin sighed for a long while. In the end, he could only shake his head and murmur, “This cannot be rushed. It cannot be rushed. This matter must be considered slowly.”

For the next stretch of time, Mu Yunyao fell completely quiet, devoting herself to embroidering the New Year’s gift prepared for the Emperor. The sheets of paper collected from various regions, each written with the words fortune, longevity, peace, and health, had already filled several large boxes. Even with Mu Yunyao’s careful mind, it took a great deal of effort to sort them all. Once that was done, however, the embroidery progressed much faster.

One day, Mu Yunyao had just finished breakfast when Jin Lan came in to report, “Miss, Steward Qin has arrived.”

“Invite him in.”

The weather had grown colder. Steward Qin had changed into a thicker-lined robe and wore a brownish-blue cap. With a smile on his face, he looked especially gentle. “Greetings, Miss Mu.”

“There is no need for such courtesy, Steward Qin. Please sit. Jin Lan, serve tea.”

Once the tea was brought in, Steward Qin took a sip and could not help praising it. “Clearly it is the same water and the same tea, yet somehow the tea here at Miss Mu’s side tastes especially fine.”

Mu Yunyao laughed lightly. “Then another day, I shall certainly have to reward Jin Lan. Her tea-brewing skill has improved.”

“She ought indeed to be rewarded.” Steward Qin looked at Jin Lan, who now moved forward and withdrew with proper bearing, and could not help sighing inwardly. Miss Mu’s way of training people was something others truly could not match. Half a year ago, he had seen what Jin Lan looked like when she had first arrived here. Compared with now, she was practically a different person.

Jin Lan quickly curtsied at the side. “Many thanks, Miss. Many thanks, Steward Qin. I shall certainly work even harder in the future.” After speaking, seeing that Steward Qin only smiled without saying anything more, she raised her eyes toward Mu Yunyao. When Mu Yunyao gave a slight nod, Jin Lan curtsied again and withdrew.

Only then did Steward Qin bring up the matter at hand. “Miss Mu, the last batch of ginger tea we sent over was of great help to His Highness. Therefore, I was thinking of preparing another batch and sending it over.”

“Steward Qin should also have seen that I am presently busy embroidering the New Year’s gift for the Emperor. My energy is truly limited, and I cannot attend to everything. As for frying and preparing the ginger tea, please handle it yourself.” The first time she had sent Yue Wang ginger tea, it had been a favor. If she sent more after that, it would be silver—white, shining silver. The money she had on hand was meant for important matters; naturally, she could not spend it all on Yue Wang.

Steward Qin could not guess what calculations lay in Mu Yunyao’s heart. Seeing that she declined directly, he did not think much of it. “Since that is the case, I shall handle it myself. I only need to borrow one person from Miss Mu.”

“Borrow someone? Steward Qin means Qi Ming, the one who helped purchase grain last time?”

“Precisely. This time, the amount of ginger tea to be sent will be larger, so the grain to be purchased will also be greater. I would like him to help share some of the work.”

“That is no problem. I will have Liu Liang notify him and ask him to go directly to Steward Qin.”

“Good. Many thanks, Miss Mu. There is also one more matter. Now that the weather is growing colder, the number of guests at Buxian Tower has decreased somewhat. I was thinking—should we perhaps renovate Jinxiu Garden a little and add curtains and draperies?”

Mu Yunyao came to herself. “These days, I have been so busy with the embroidery in my hands that I nearly forgot this matter. Starting tomorrow, Jinxiu Garden will close for three days. We will rearrange the scenery in the garden.”

“Is three days not too short?” With such haste, could it be completed?

“Steward Qin may rest assured. When Jinxiu Garden’s scenery was first repaired and arranged, I had already carefully considered how to block the wind in winter. The curtains and draperies were also prepared earlier. Now we need only have people hang them up. It will not delay us for long.”

“That is excellent. Miss Mu’s thoughts are meticulous indeed. It is truly admirable.” Steward Qin knew Mu Yunyao was pressed for time. After saying a few more words reminding her to take care of her health, he rose and took his leave.

After Mu Yunyao told Liu Liang about the matter, she put it entirely out of her mind. More than ten days later, Steward Qin came to thank her, saying that Qi Ming had handled matters thoroughly. The grain he purchased was of excellent quality, and the price was ten percent lower than that of other grain merchants. Steward Qin praised him for nearly a quarter of an hour, and before leaving, he even left a red envelope behind, hoping Mu Yunyao would pass it to Qi Ming.

After he left, Mu Yunyao was just about to have Jin Lan call Liu Liang when Liu Liang walked in carrying a box.

“Liu Liang, you came at just the right time. Steward Qin just sent over a red envelope, saying he wished to thank Qi Ming for handling things so well. Find some time to pass it to him.”

After Liu Liang finished saluting and rose, his expression was somewhat stiff as he presented the box to Mu Yunyao.

Remembering Steward Qin’s long string of praise, Mu Yunyao still had a smile on her face. “What is this?” As she spoke, she opened the box, and the smile on her face suddenly paused.

Inside the box lay a neat stack of banknotes. She picked them up and roughly counted them. There were at least twenty thousand taels.

“Where did so much silver come from?”

“Reporting to Master, Qi Ming earned it.”

Mu Yunyao was genuinely astonished. “He earned it?” Her first thought was that Qi Ming had secretly skimmed from the money Steward Qin had given him to purchase grain. Yet when she thought of Steward Qin’s praise just now, she felt that it should not be so. After all, Steward Qin was not someone easily fooled. The quality and price of grain were things that could least withstand deception.

Liu Liang nodded. “Back then, when he followed your instructions and went to collect grain, he heard what the grain would be used for and bought extra. Now, he sold the grain he had stored to Steward Qin.”

When she had sent Qi Ming to buy grain, the autumn harvest had just passed, and the price of newly harvested grain had been much lower. Now winter had arrived, and the price had naturally risen. The more than twenty thousand taels of silver came from that difference.

Mu Yunyao’s thoughts turned. Once she understood the key point, she could not help laughing softly. “This Qi Ming is truly a talent. Another day, bring him to me. I want to see what such a clever person looks like.”

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 147

Chapter 147: Miss Mu Sends Ginger Tea Across a Thousand Li

After entering Yuexi territory, the bandits removed their face coverings. The one at their head was none other than Yu Heng, Yue Wang’s trusted retainer.

The other guards, who had also disguised themselves as bandits, stared curiously at the burlap sacks covered with oiled felt cloth on the carts. Some could not resist reaching out to squeeze them; others even leaned in to smell them. Unfortunately, there was not the slightest scent, leaving them unable to guess what was inside.

Yu Heng turned back and caught sight of their movements. He could not help giving a low rebuke. “Do not touch them recklessly. These contain the ginger tea Miss Mu sent over. Steward Cheng reminded me again and again that not even a little of it may be damaged.”

The others exchanged glances, their eyes brimming with curiosity. For Yu Heng to respectfully call someone “Miss,” her identity must be far from ordinary. Yet they had never seen His Highness grow close to any young lady.

Those who had been sent to handle this matter were all Yue Wang’s confidants, so they had fewer reservations when speaking.

“Which family’s young lady is this Miss Mu?”

Yu Heng swept him a glance, and the smile at the corner of his lips grew even more mysterious.

Receiving no answer, everyone felt as though claws were scratching at their hearts. Though they did not know what sort of tea this ginger tea was, they knew well enough how precious tea leaves were. Even the most ordinary tea, if it filled more than a dozen carts, would cost tens of thousands of taels of silver. Which young lady in the family could be so generous?

All the way back to Yue Wang’s Residence, their curiosity did not fade in the slightest.

After returning to the residence, Yu Heng first went to report. “Master, all the ginger tea Miss Mu sent has been escorted back.”

Yue Wang rose and went to the courtyard. There, he saw the guards unloading sack after sack.

Yu Heng picked up one sack and set it upright. Then, with great care, he opened its mouth for Yue Wang to inspect.

The guards, who had long been burning with curiosity, stretched their necks one after another to look. Once the sack was opened, they discovered another layer of waterproof, damp-proof felt cloth wrapped inside. When that felt cloth was removed, a rich fragrance immediately drifted out.

Everyone could not help inhaling deeply, delight filling their eyes. Yuexi had few edible resources to begin with, and even so, they still had to contend with raids and harassment from Beijiang (the Northern Frontier) and the Yunnu. Once winter came, life became even more strained. Even they, guards of Yue Wang’s Residence, did not have much oil in their bellies.

Now, after traveling for an entire day, the sudden fragrance of the ginger tea seemed to grow claws, drawing out rumbling sounds from their stomachs one after another.

Yue Wang reached out, took a little of the ginger tea, and rubbed it between his fingers. The light in his eyes remained cold and clear, yet another emotion seemed to flicker within it.

Steward Cheng had already prepared bowls. To help build Mu Yunyao’s reputation, he had brought no small number of them—basically one for every guard who had gone to escort the ginger tea.

“Your Highness, this ginger tea has finally arrived after such difficulty. How about we all taste it?” Though his mouth was asking for permission, his hands did not hesitate in the least. He had already taken a ladle and scooped some into the bowls.

Yue Wang gave a slight nod, and everyone present immediately broke into smiles.

Some of the more impatient ones saw Steward Cheng scoop the ginger tea into the bowls and simply grabbed a handful of the powdered mixture to put into their mouths. Their eyes widened in delight. “Delicious! This ginger tea is truly delicious!”

They had originally thought it was tea leaves. Who would have expected it to be pale yellow rice flour, with a little dried vegetable and diced meat mixed in? Even eaten dry like this, it filled the mouth with savory fragrance, delicate and delicious.

“This was sent all the way here by Miss Mu. If I had known you lot would behave like this, I simply would not have let you taste it!”

The moment Steward Cheng spoke, a chorus of wails rose at once.

“Do not say that, Steward Cheng. Look, we have not failed to show you filial respect on ordinary days. Just let us have a taste first. Is there not still a great deal of it?”

“Steward Cheng, who exactly is this Miss Mu you speak of?” They had already heard Yu Heng mention her once, and now Steward Cheng had brought her up again. It made them nearly die of curiosity.

“Do not pry blindly. When it is time for you to know, naturally you will know. Enough. This ginger tea is not meant to be eaten dry. I have already had people bring hot water. Each of you may go scoop some into your bowl and brew it.”

“Good! Many thanks, Steward Cheng.”

When food was mentioned, everyone temporarily suppressed their curiosity and hurried over with their bowls to add hot water.

After being brewed with hot water, the fragrance grew even richer. The dried ginger pieces and vegetables unfurled, releasing a thick aroma, while the diced meat remained especially chewy. Blowing aside the steam and taking one sip sent warmth through the whole body, leaving an endless aftertaste.

Steward Cheng brought a bowl over to Yue Wang. “Your Highness, would you like to taste some as well?”

Yue Wang shook his head and walked straight toward the carriage. After sweeping his gaze over it, he lifted aside a sack and took out an exquisite wooden box. A slip of paper had been pressed atop the box, written with the words: For His Highness Yue Wang to open personally.

Steward Cheng slurped his ginger tea while leaning over. Seeing the handwriting on the slip, his eyes filled with laughter. “Your Highness, it seems the contents of this box were specially prepared for you by Miss Mu. Will you not open it and have a look?”

Yue Wang glanced at the bowl in Steward Cheng’s hand. “Uncle Cheng, they have already started drinking their second bowl.”

Steward Cheng quickly turned back. Raising the ladle in his hand, he went over to strike at them. “You brats, put down your bowls! Hey—Yu Heng, I am speaking to you! Do not scoop so much. Your bowl is only so large. If you add that much powder, will it not turn into paste once you pour in water?”

While the courtyard was filled with noise and laughter, Yue Wang carried the wooden box back to his study. Upon opening it, he found a letter on top. The letter carefully explained how to prepare the ginger tea, how much to use, and how to store it. The instructions were extremely detailed. Yet after Yue Wang finished reading, his brows could not help but draw together slightly. Only when he opened the oiled paper and saw that the ginger tea inside was clearly different from the batch outside did his expression ease a little.

Steward Cheng considerately brought hot water, bowls, and utensils, then said nothing at all before retreating with a smiling face.

Yue Wang brewed a bowl of ginger tea. Merely smelling it, he felt that it was far more fragrant than the kind Yu Heng and the others were drinking outside. He glanced again at the wooden box, and at last his brows relaxed slightly. Taking his time, he drank the bowl of ginger tea with added vegetables and meat, then sat behind his desk and began writing a reply.

In Jiangnan, at Jinxiu Garden, Steward Qin stared dumbfounded at Yu Yi before him. “What did you say? Repeat what you just said.”

A bad premonition rose in Yu Yi’s heart, and he took two small steps backward. “Steward Qin, please do not be so agitated. Did you not say with your own mouth that I was to deliver the letters into His Highness’s hands? I delivered them to him, did I not?”

“I told you to personally deliver the letter to His Highness, but I never said both letters were for him!” Steward Qin wished he could grab Yu Yi and stomp on him twice. One of those letters had been meant for Old Cheng. In it, he had hinted at great length that Miss Mu had feelings for His Highness, all for the sake of urging Old Cheng to whisper more advice from the side and help bring His Highness and Miss Mu together. If His Highness saw it instead, what if it backfired?

Yu Yi felt that the look Steward Qin gave him was no different from one directed at a mortal enemy. He quickly retreated another two steps. “You cannot blame me for this. You did not write on the envelopes whom they were meant for. When I returned, Steward Cheng was right beside me and even asked about them. I saw that both envelopes were blank, so I gave them both to His Highness.”

“I… I did not write whom they were for?”

“That is right. Both envelopes were completely blank. You did not write a single word.” Yu Yi nodded with firm conviction.

Steward Qin froze for a moment, then swallowed. No wonder His Highness’s reply had contained only three words—I know now. So the root of the matter was here. Did

His Highness knew that Miss Mu secretly admired him.

But in truth, all of that had been nonsense Steward Qin had made up himself.

What was he to do now?
