Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 618

~ Win The Fair Maiden’s Heart Sooner ~

Jin Lan was confused. “Jin Qiao, what’s wrong with you?”

“Elder Sister, why did you blush just now?” Jin Qiao stared at Jin Lan anxiously, hoping she would not go astray.

Jin Lan’s cheeks turned even redder. “I didn’t. You saw wrong.”

“You’re still denying it.” Jin Qiao looked grave. “Sister Jin Lan, our young lady, has treated us well. I’ve already decided in my heart that she will be my mistress for life. Don’t forget your place.”

Jin Lan grew even more bewildered. “What are you even talking about?”

Seeing Jin Lan still refusing to “repent,” Jin Qiao’s expression hardened. “Sister Jin Lan, you blushed because you saw Yue Wang, didn’t you?”

Jin Lan nodded, then immediately shook her head. “Don’t talk nonsense.”

“You, you still won’t admit it. Your face says everything.” Jin Qiao spoke faster and faster. “Sister Jin Lan, back when we struggled just to survive in that broker’s hands, it was only after coming to Miss that we found a way to live, and we live a hundred times better than before. You can’t fight Miss Yue Wang. Besides, what status does Miss have? What talent does she have? You can’t possibly compete…”

Jin Qiao’s words came in an urgent stream, her mouth never stopping. Jin Lan tried several times to interrupt, but could not get a word in. In the end, she could only stand there and wait for her to finish.

Jin Qiao lectured earnestly for a long while before finally pausing. Seeing Jin Lan’s expressionless face, she panicked so badly that her eyes nearly filled with tears.

“If you keep being this stubborn, I… I’ll tell Miss and have her transfer you away for a while. If you don’t see Yue Wang for some time, your feelings will fade. Then when you come back, you’ll still be the person Miss trusts most.”

Jin Lan saw her going further and further off the rails and hurriedly covered her mouth with her hand.

“Stop talking nonsense. I wasn’t blushing because of Yue Wang. I blushed because of the guard beside him. Today he gave me an ice lantern.”

Jin Qiao froze, then her eyes went wide. “A guard, Yu Heng or Yu Yi?”

“…Yu Heng.”

Jin Qiao instantly brightened. “That’s great. You scared me to death just now. I thought you’d fallen for Yue Wang.”

“Miss and His Royal Highness are deeply in love. There’s no room for anyone to wedge in.” Jin Lan’s tone turned serious. “Don’t talk nonsense again.”

Relieved, Jin Qiao then grew bashful. “Sister Jin Lan, I misunderstood you. But Yu Heng gave you an ice lantern, does that mean he wants to…”

Jin Lan was clearly stifling a laugh, and the discomfort on her face deepened. “Don’t talk nonsense. It’s still far from that. Go prepare the tea and snacks.”

Yue Wang studied the red wedding dress displayed on the rack. The excitement in his eyes was so intense that it was practically overflowing. He wrapped his arms around Mu Yunyao’s waist and spun in place twice.

“Yunyao, time feels so slow. I wish it were the eighteenth day of the first lunar month already.”

“Little New Year is almost here. They’ve already started preparing to distribute porridge outside. Once that’s done, the New Year will pass in the blink of an eye.” Mu Yunyao looked up at him. “Fourth Lord, what is there to be anxious about?”

“Because I want to bring my beauty home sooner.”

Yue Wang lowered his voice slightly. His warm breath brushed her ear, softening her heart. Mu Yunyao lifted her arms around his neck, cheeks reddening.

“Then I’ll let you hold me first.”

Yue Wang’s eyes curved with a smile. Using the motion of pulling her close, he pressed a light kiss to her lips.

“Yunyao, I’m so happy.”

He had always been cold by nature, indifferent to most emotions. Yet today, bubbles of joy kept rising in his heart, joining into a sweetness that seemed endless.

Inside Ni Yun Fang, Yue Wang refused to let go of the person in his arms.

At the capital’s gate, the Beijiang envoy delegation halted.

Seeing people still walking freely inside the city gate, vendors calling out, and even children running around and playing, the Beijiang envoys felt offended. They went straight to the official responsible for receiving them, their tone accusatory.

“We in Beijiang have sent envoys here in hopes of strengthening ties between our two nations and ensuring lasting friendship. Why do you treat us with such disrespect?”

The receiving official replied evenly, without the slightest hint of apology, even as he spoke the polite words.

“My lord misunderstands. Our Emperor of Da Li is exceptionally wise and valorous, and he loves his people as his children. Long ago, he issued an order: unless an imperial edict grants special permission, no official may casually disturb the lives of the common people. The law is paramount. This humble official cannot violate it. I ask the envoy to forgive us.”

The Beijiang envoys were even more displeased.

At the city wall tower, Yu Wang quickly learned of the exchange.

“The place is small, yet their mouths are big. They aren’t even Beijiang royalty in person, and they still want us to clear the streets, absurd.” Yu Wang’s eyes were cold. “Have the officials from the Ministry of Rites escort them straight to the courier station. Once I’m done with court matters, I’ll find time to go see them.”

“Yes.”

Yu Wang left the tower and quietly went straight to Ni Yun Fang.

Yue Wang saw Yu Wang sitting to the side drinking tea, and his expression immediately cooled.

“Second Imperial Brother isn’t receiving the Beijiang envoys. What are you doing at Ni Yun Fang instead?”

“I heard you and Yunyao are plotting something big, so I came to check how it’s going.” Yu Wang looked at Yue Wang with a very indulgent gaze. A man about to marry is always impatient, especially one who has coveted his wife-to-be for a long time but never had the chance to bring her home. Such men were like firecrackers, touchy and easy to set off. He had lived through it himself, so he would not be offended.

Mu Yunyao signaled Jin Lan to serve tea, then spoke softly.

“The bait has already been cast. Now we wait patiently for the fish to bite.”

Yu Wang still looked uneasy. “Your plan is detailed, but you’re using letters to bait both the Third Prince and Beijiang at the same time. Won’t something go wrong in the middle?”

When he first heard Yue Wang and Mu Yunyao explain the plan, he was full of doubt.

They had imitated Beijiang and sent a letter, hoping to inflame the Third Prince’s ambition, making him think Beijiang would support him. Then they also sent a letter to Beijiang, first expressing goodwill, then subtly implying they needed support, and promising that once it succeeded, they would cede territory in thanks.

The letters had been sent long ago, yet neither side had moved, as stones dropped into a still lake without raising even a ripple. Yu Wang had grown anxious.

He had also contacted some court officials, but the Eldest Imperial Brother’s backing remained solid. If the Emperor insisted on appointing a Crown Prince even with Beijiang envoys present, Yu Wang might lose.

Right now, the priority was to bring down the Li family. Without the Li family, Ling Wang would amount to little. But to bring down the Li family, they needed evidence. If the Li family stayed still, they could wipe everything clean. To gather evidence, they first had to make them move.

Yu Wang frowned. “This really is risky. If you slip even a little, the lie will be exposed. What if the fish don’t bite?”

“Then we add more hooks,” Yue Wang said calmly. “There will always be one that tempts the fish.”

Mu Yunyao’s expression was gentle, but her words made Yu Wang feel a chill run down his spine.

“There’s always something that will make them bite.”

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 617

~ A Hint Of Ambition ~

Yue Wang spoke with complete seriousness, his expression exceptionally earnest. “The chair in the study is hard. I sit there all day, so that’s why.”

Mu Yunyao was just about to take his pulse when she shot him a look. “Fourth Master, I don’t think your waist hurts. I think you ate too much and got stuffed.”

Yue Wang did not mind at all. He held Mu Yunyao’s hand, his manner intimate. “Mm. I’m stuffed. I’ll have to take a few of your bolsters back with me before I feel better.” He liked using things Mu Yunyao had used, as if they carried her scent. For example, that quilt by his window, even in summer, he could not bear to put it away. He kept it beside the bed, as though that made him a little closer to her.

Mu Yunyao nearly grabbed a bolster and smacked him. He was becoming increasingly shameless. “If Fourth Master wants bolsters, just say so. You don’t need to pretend you’re sick to scare me.”

Yue Wang pulled her in front of him, then wrapped an arm around her waist. “I like the way you look when you’re worried about me. In those moments, it feels like there’s only me in your eyes.”

Mu Yunyao froze for a beat, then slowly smiled. She raised her hand and gently brushed over his brows and eyes. His brows were sharp, his eyes always deep, like an endless night sky. With a single glance, people could not help but sink into them.

Because Yue Wang’s teasing delayed her brewing, when she went back to the tea, it had already cooled quite a bit. Mu Yunyao added some hot water and brought it to him.

Yue Wang did not mind. Smiling brightly, he took a sip and praised, “Good tea.”

Mu Yunyao could not help laughing. “Fourth Master, you didn’t go to court today?”

“I’m getting married. There are far too many things to prepare. I asked Imperial Father for leave so that I won’t be attending court for the next few days.”

“Yesterday, the Emperor even went to complain to my grandmother, saying you won’t help him shoulder state affairs anymore, and that you’re unfilial to the extreme.”

“There are the Eldest Imperial Brother and Second Imperial Brother handling court matters. When I have time, it’s enough for me to accompany Imperial Father.” He saw it clearly. Imperial Father complained with his mouth, but in his heart, he was quite pleased with Yue Wang’s current attitude. Leng Wang and Yu Wang were constantly fighting in court, causing chaos in the government. If Yue Wang joined in as well, things would only become more complicated.

Mu Yunyao asked, “Has the court reached a decision? How does the Emperor intend to treat the Beijiang envoys?”

“The civil officials’ proposal is overly soft, but it has its merits. Between states, you do not kill an envoy. No matter why Beijiang sent envoys this time, before they reveal their dagger, we must treat them gently. Imperial Father accepted the civil officials’ view, but he handed the duty of receiving the envoys to Second Imperial Brother.”

Mu Yunyao paused, then curled her lips into a smile. “Imperial Father is wise. Yu Wang has fought Beijiang before and has seen their brutality. He has no goodwill toward them. With Imperial Father’s orders in place, he won’t openly make things difficult for the envoys, but he will stay on guard. If there’s any problem, he’ll be able to discover it and deal with it in time.”

Yue Wang nodded. “Mu Yunyao, have the letters to Third Prince and the Beijiang envoys been sent already?”

“They were sent yesterday. Beijiang will need some time, but Third Prince should have already seen his.”

In the Third Prince’s residence, Ning Junjin examined the letter in his hands. His gaze rose and fell, filled with uncertainty. After a long while, he finally steadied himself, gripping the letter tightly as he looked toward the guard at his side.

“Did you find any clues?”

This morning, when he woke, the letter was already at his bedside. The contents, and especially the signature at the end, nearly made him fall from his chair. It claimed to be from Beijiang. Not only did it goad him into rebellion, but it even stated that Beijiang could support him in secret, providing weapons and warhorses.

If the envelope had not carried a Beijiang royal seal, he would have torn it up and thrown it aside on the spot.

The guard looked ashamed. “Reporting to Your Royal Highness, we found no clues at all.”

“It seems the person who delivered it has profound martial arts. Otherwise, they could not have slipped past everyone.”

“Your Royal Highness, the letter is full of deceitful, enticing words. Should this subordinate destroy it?”

Third Prince nodded. He watched the guard take the letter to burn it, then, as if possessed, called out, “Wait.”

He took it back, opened it again, and reread it. In the end, his gaze fixed on the words weapons and warhorses.

Beijiang’s warhorses are famed. I’ve heard the Beijiang cavalry is so fierce largely because of their superior mounts.”

“Yes. This subordinate has also heard that training an excellent warhorse can be as hard as training a commander.”

Third Prince’s fingers lightly brushed across the paper. The light in his eyes flickered for a long time. Then he gave a cold laugh.

“I’m unable to walk, not brainless. Beijiang thinks it can fool me with such a shallow scheme. If they truly had an abundance of iron weapons and warhorses, they would have already marched south to attack the Da Li Dynasty. Why would they bargain with a mere prince?”

The guard stood silently to one side. Seeing that Third Prince did not destroy the letter, but instead carefully stored it in a hidden compartment, his heart jolted.

Six days later, a letter bearing the seal of the Third Prince’s residence was quietly delivered into the hands of the Beijiang envoy party.

In their temporary camp, a Beijiang man dressed in Hu attire opened the letter. A glint flashed through his gloomy eyes.

“Third Prince. A blind, crippled wreck dares to negotiate with Beijiang, and the moment he opens his mouth, he demands weapons and warhorses. Ridiculous. Ignore it. Pass the order down. Move faster and hurry on the road. We must enter the Da Li Dynasty capital, Xiling, as soon as possible.”

“Yes.”

Mu Yunyao finished embroidering the phoenix tail feathers on her wedding dress and nodded in satisfaction. “All right. After working so long, it’s finally finished.”

Caiyi and the others held up the wedding dress and carefully brushed over it, praising it without end. “Miss, this dress is truly too beautiful. Just looking at it makes this servant want to marry, too.”

The other embroiderers teased, “Shopkeeper Caiyi, if you want to marry, isn’t it just a matter of saying the word? The men who come to propose to you have nearly talked their lips raw, but you’ve never once agreed.”

Caiyi could not help glaring at them. “I’m waiting for Miss to find me a good match. I don’t care for those crooked melons and cracked dates.”

Mu Yunyao smiled. “Fine. Another day, I’ll find some fine young men and let you choose for yourself.”

The Ni Yun Fang burst into laughter and chatter.

Just then, Jin Lan entered with cheeks faintly red. “Miss, Yue Wang is here.”

Mu Yunyao’s heart lifted. She dismissed Caiyi and the others, then had Yue Wang invited upstairs.

Jin Qiao stepped out the door and hurriedly grabbed Jin Lan, her eyes scanning her up and down. “Sister Jin Lan, you’ve always been steady, and you see things clearly. You understand your place, don’t you?”

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 616

~ Rogue Advancement ~

Mu Yunyao sat beside Eldest Princess Yide, holding a long bamboo wand as she teased the koi raised in a wide-mouthed blue-and-white porcelain basin.

Mama Qu reported the situation to Eldest Princess Yide from the side in court.

“Eldest Princess, the Emperor asked His Royal Highness Ling Wang and His Royal Highness Yu Wang how the Beijiang envoys should be treated. The two princes hold opposite views. Ling Wang stood with the civil officials and advocated treating them with courtesy to display the Da Li Dynasty’s bearing. At the same time, Yu Wang believes Beijiang harbors ill intent and should be guarded against. His opinion largely aligns with the military officials.”

Eldest Princess Yide sprinkled fish feed into the basin. Watching the koi compete as they swam over to snatch it, the smile on her lips was faint and cool. “The struggle in court did not begin today or yesterday. Let them fight if they wish. Yunyao, the New Year is almost here. Grandmother has already prepared all your dowry. How is your wedding dress coming along?”

“Reporting to Grandmother, I’m embroidering the main work myself. It will be finished soon. After that, I’ll adjust the edges and details. Before the New Year, it will certainly be completed.”

“That’s good. I’ve had people keep an eye on Yue Wang’s residence for you. The repairs are being done well, and it should be close to completion by the end of the year. Now everything is ready, all that remains is the day you marry.” Eldest Princess Yide studied Mu Yunyao, her eyes full of reluctance. “You’ve only just returned to my side for a few days, and you’re already marrying into someone else’s family. When I think of you leaving my side, it feels as if my heart has been carved hollow.”

Mu Yunyao quickly set down the bamboo wand, went to Eldest Princess Yide, and held her hand, rocking it gently. “Grandmother, after I’m married, I can still come every day to accompany you. It’s only a change of residence, it’s no different from now. Besides, I’m still relying on you to support me. If Yue Wang treats me poorly in the future, I’ll come straight here to complain. When that happens, you must help me deal with him.”

“Good. If Junyue dares to make you angry, I’ll be the first to refuse.”

Mu Yunyao smiled, but before she could speak, a warm, laughing voice sounded.

“How would I dare to make Yunyao angry?” Yue Wang walked in. The moment he saw Mu Yunyao’s slightly flushed cheeks, his eyes filled with amusement.

Mama Qu hurried forward and took Yue Wang’s white fur cloak. Underneath was a pale blue long robe. Paired with the faint smile on his face, he looked like a jade-hearted gentleman, peerless in bearing.

Eldest Princess Yide examined Yue Wang, then looked at Mu Yunyao, lovely as a flower at dawn. She felt the two of them matched to the extreme. The bit of reluctance in her heart gradually faded, but her words remained firm. “That is hard to say. Junyue, your temperament is cold. You and Yunyao are extremely ill-suited…”

Yue Wang immediately picked up her words. “Imperial Aunt, one cold and one warm is precisely the most fitting…”

Mu Yunyao’s face reddened even more. She secretly shot Yue Wang a glare. Grandmother was clearly only joking, yet he still had the nerve to answer so shamelessly.

Eldest Princess Yide’s smile deepened. “When feelings are thick, water tastes like honey. When feelings turn thin, honey is not sweet. You speak well now, but who can say what you’ll be like later?”

“Imperial Aunt, you know my nature. I will not fail Yunyao.” Yue Wang was anxious. Even knowing Eldest Princess Yide said it on purpose, he still insisted on making his promise, because he did not want even the slightest doubt to appear in Yunyao’s heart about their future.

Seeing Yue Wang so anxious, Xu Yanhan spoke up to help. “Mother, I’m checking Yunyao’s dowry list. There are some items I can’t decide on. Will you come help me take a look?”

Eldest Princess Yide glanced at Mu Yunyao and Ning Junyue with a smile, then waved her hand at them. “I’ll look at the dowry list. You two, stop bothering me here.”

Yue Wang immediately nodded. “Yes. Then Yunyao and I will take our leave.”

Mu Yunyao had not even had time to say anything before Yue Wang dragged her straight out.

Watching Yue Wang’s hand clasping Mu Yunyao’s, Eldest Princess Yide lifted her brows. “I once thought Junyue’s temperament was so aloof that he might die alone. I never expected that once he fell in love, he would change completely.”

Xu Yanhan smiled from the side. As far as she was concerned, Yue Wang was satisfactory in every way. Whether back in Jingling City or now in the capital, his heart toward Yunyao had never changed. That alone was rare. “Yunyao’s temperament has also changed quite a bit.”

In the past, she was guarded against everyone and everything, tense as a drawn string. As her mother, Xu Yanhan, worried constantly, she was afraid that one day she would snap. Now it was better. With Yue Wang by her side, she had learned to rely on others, and her smiles had become far more vivid than before. She only hoped the two children’s wedding would go smoothly and that, in the future, they would live in harmony and grow old together.

Yue Wang pulled Mu Yunyao out of the main hall. Mu Yunyao quickly drew her fingers back and awkwardly adjusted her sleeves. “Just now, in front of Grandmother, how could you… How could you be so discourteous?” When she and Yue Wang were alone, they could be casual, but in front of the elders, she never dared overstep. Yue Wang’s heedless tug just now left her deeply uneasy.

Yue Wang’s eyes carried a smile. When Mu Yunyao finished smoothing her sleeves, he reached out again, took her hand, and gave it a gentle squeeze. Then he spread her palm flat and held it in his own, examining it as if he were looking at a priceless treasure.

If he could, he would announce it to the entire world, have heaven and earth bear witness, have all rivers cheer. He was going to marry, and the one he would marry was the love of his life.

Mu Yunyao was embarrassed by the way he stared. She tried to pull her hand back, but he fixed her wrist and would not let her move. She could only curl her fingers slightly, her pink fingertips paling. “Fourth Master, is it really that pretty?”

Yue Wang nodded with solemn seriousness. “Your grace is deep and distant, gentle and true. Your skin is fine, your bones and flesh perfectly proportioned. Yunyao’s fingers are slender as jade. Of course, they are beautiful beyond measure.” Unlike his own hands, with calluses in the palm, hands that could grip thorns without feeling pain.

Mu Yunyao tried to pinch his palm. She used force for a long while until her own fingers hurt, yet she still could not leave even the faintest mark.

Seeing Mu Yunyao puffed up with indignation, Yue Wang laughed softly. “Yunyao, let’s sit in that pavilion.”

Mu Yunyao glanced at the pavilion, open to the wind with snow still drifting around it. Then she looked at Yue Wang, who had come out without a cloak. She snorted inwardly. His mind had become full of twists and turns. “Fourth Master’s clothes are thin, and the wind is strong there. Let’s go to the side hall instead.” With that, she turned and went straight toward the side hall.

Yue Wang closed his hand, as if trying to keep the warmth she left behind, and followed her with a smile.

As soon as they entered the side hall, warm fragrance and heat washed over them. Yue Wang looked around at the furnishings, light flickering in his eyes. He had been here before. The main arrangement was unchanged, yet there were now many little touches that made a person’s heart feel warm.

He walked to the desk and pinched the soft bolster placed beside it. The corners of his lips lifted. “Yunyao, my waist has been hurting these past few days.”

Mu Yunyao set down the half-poured teacup and hurried over to his side. “What’s wrong?”

Incurable Chapter 58 Part 2

The rain fell for half the day, dispersing the lingering mist. Mu Wan stayed in her room reading and napping, while Liu Qianxiu engaged in his spiritual practice. Around one o’clock in the afternoon, after she awoke from her nap, Liu Qianxiu pushed open the door and entered.

Liu Qianxiu had changed into a new set of Taoist robes. His posture was straight and tall, his aura pure and cool, giving him an ethereal, otherworldly air. Seeing him, she set down the book in her hands, opened her arms, and smiled.

Understanding her gesture, he walked over, lifted her off the bed, and kissed her lips.

“Get ready. We’re going fishing.”

The fishing spot was at the Qingyuan River behind the mountain. Mu Wan propped herself up, looked down at him, and asked, “Aren’t you going to meditate?”

“Mhm.” Liu Qianxiu placed her back on the bed and fetched her shoes.

“This doesn’t seem right,” Mu Wan murmured, gazing out the window at the silent main hall. “Weren’t you here for seclusion? What if Master disapproves when you leave?”

He sat on the bedside, listening to her chatter. Only after she finished did he ask, “Who said I came for seclusion?”

Mu Wan froze.

While she was lost in thought, Liu Qianxiu slipped her other shoe on. He leaned down, gently hooked her nose with his finger—an intimate, doting gesture.

“I came to play with you.”

His face was inches away, clear and handsome. A little flower bloomed in Mu Wan’s heart, its petals sweet and fragrant. She stood up, her excitement bubbling over. “Then let’s go.”

They grabbed their fishing gear and followed the back mountain path toward the Qingyuan River. The grass on either side of the trail was rain-soaked, leaving their legs damp with each step.

Mu Wan adored the back mountain for its vast bamboo groves—the leaves were a vibrant green, and the air carried the faint, refreshing scent of bamboo. She followed Liu Qianxiu, admiring his Taoist robe as it fluttered with each step. He exuded an aura of both chivalry and Taoist grace, utterly captivating.

Though they came to catch fish, it was really just an excuse to play. Mu Wan slipped off her shoes and let Liu Qianxiu lead her onto the boat. Once they reached the river’s center, Liu Qianxiu cast the net, and the two of them lay back on the boat.

After a half-day of rain, the sky had cleared. Beneath the blue heavens, large, fluffy white clouds drifted like tangled masses of cotton candy.

The fishing net descended into the river. The boat drifted motionless in the center of the calm, crystal-clear waters, like a painting.

Mu Wan felt completely at ease. Lying against Liu Qianxiu, she gazed at the blue sky and white clouds, breathing in the fresh air after the autumn rain. The river murmured, the small boat rocked gently. Time and the world seemed to stand still.

Resting her head on Liu Qianxiu’s chest, she watched him read a book. The pages carried the scent of incense from the main hall, fresh and natural. Mu Wan rolled over, and Liu Qianxiu looked up at her. Her eyes were fixed on the book cover—another ancient text, written in classical Chinese, with sparse lines of text. Within its pages lay profound, inexplicable wisdom.

“Did you bring your homework here?” Mu Wan asked with a smile.

He set the book aside, smiling as he gently pinched her earlobe. “It’s a habit.”

It truly was a habit. He was quiet most of the time, and when he was quiet, he read. The book lay to one side, pages fluttering in the breeze. Mu Wan scanned a few lines.

The characters were traditional Chinese. She could recognize about eighty to ninety percent of them, but the meaning within? She didn’t understand. In front of Liu Qianxiu and the others, she was practically illiterate.

“If you keep reading like this, how many books will it take?” Mu Wan mused. “Master Xuan Qingzi must have finished reading them all by now, right?”

“No,” Liu Qianxiu denied, his eyes veiled in mist. He tucked her jet-black hair behind her ear and said, “Each book offers different insights when read at different times. Daoist cultivation emphasizes enlightenment, not quantity. Master has pursued enlightenment for nearly eighty years, yet the books remain the same.”

Muwan didn’t fully grasp his explanation, but she caught the key point. Her eyes widened as she asked, “Master has pursued enlightenment for nearly eighty years... How old is he this year?”

“Eighty-two,” Liu Qianxiu replied.

In the entertainment industry, celebrities place utmost importance on maintaining their appearance, yet no one can defy the passage of time. Even those who seem to age slowly over decades cannot hide their signs of aging once they reach eighty.

Xuan Qingzi appeared only sixty, yet was actually eighty-two. What kind of immortal was this?

Mu Wan studied Liu Qianxiu’s features closely. He was six or seven years older than her, yet in reality, he looked much like men her own age.

Mu Wan raised her hand and brushed his cheek. “Will you stay this young forever?”

A soft sigh escaped his throat as Liu Qianxiu clasped her hand.

“My future is spent entirely with you.” He kissed her fingertips, a faint smile touching his lips. “See for yourself.”

His kisses made her fingers tingle, and his words stirred something deep within her. Mu Wan laughed, meeting his dark eyes. She shifted, wanting to climb up to his level. The moment she moved, he caught her waist and pulled her close.

His future was spent with her. How long would that future last?

Mu Wan cupped his cheeks with both hands, leaning down to kiss him. Their soft lips entwined, a gentle breeze unable to dispel their tenderness. She kissed him lightly, a soft laugh escaping her lips.

“Liu Qianxiu,” she murmured, her beautiful eyes narrowing slightly. “Do you have pre-wedding jitters? Is that why you brought me to this Taoist temple to meditate and clear my mind?”

His fingers tangled in her hair as he gazed directly into her eyes, his expression heavy with tenderness and adoration.

“Afraid of what?”

Afraid... She didn’t know what she was afraid of, either.

She licked her lips and asked, “Aren’t you afraid?”

Her voice was soft and sweet. Her hair fell over her ears, a slant of sunlight filtering through the dark strands beside her ear, illuminating her cheek with a soft, delicate glow.

“Mhm.” Liu Qianxiu nodded, his smile breaking through like sunlight piercing a valley.

“I fear you won’t marry me.”

Mu Wan rested her head against his chest. His words vibrated against her skin as she listened to his heartbeat, and she smiled.

Incurable Chapter 58 Part 1

Mu Wan returned to her room, where the light from the main hall shone through the window. The flickering lamplight cast elongated shadows on the square tiles outside the hall—three shadows, though she couldn’t tell which one belonged to Liu Qianxiu. She sat on the bed watching for a while, barely turning two pages of her book before drowsiness overtook her. She fell asleep clutching the book.

After an unknown period, Liu Qianxiu returned. The night air was chilly, and he carried a hint of that coolness with him, along with the rich scent of sandalwood incense from the main hall. Mu Wan inhaled the fragrance, and her body, warmed by sleep, rolled into his embrace.

The contact between their contrasting temperatures sent a shiver through both of them. Half-asleep, Mu Wan clung to him and murmured, “You’re back.”

“Mhm.” Liu Qianxiu raised his hand to touch her cheek, but hesitated, aware his fingers were too cold. He pulled the thin blanket over her instead. Lying on his side, he held her close in his arms.

Sandalwood had a calming effect. Mu Wan wanted to say more to Liu Qianxiu, but drowsiness overwhelmed her, and she eventually drifted off. They had all the time in the world; why rush to speak tonight?

Breathing in the faint, lingering scent of sandalwood, Mu Wan slept exceptionally soundly and comfortably. She went to bed early and woke early. Upon waking, she shifted slightly beneath the thin blanket. The bed retained some warmth, but he was no longer there.

Opening her eyes, Mu Wan surveyed her surroundings. Coming to her senses, she rose from the bed.

It was only 6:30 a.m. The sun rose early in the mountains, bringing light quickly, yet the air held a dampness that gathered into thick fog. Mist swirled and rose as Mu Wan stood outside the hall, gazing at the divine statue within the main sanctuary. She heard the sound of sweeping outside.

Mu Wan stepped outside. The fog was thick there, too. Looking up, she could only make out the peaks of the opposite mountain range. The air felt damp, as if rain were imminent.

“Sister, you’re awake?” The weather had turned cooler, and leaves were beginning to fall. Qing Chan wore a Taoist robe, her hair tied in a bun. At her feet, a small broom had already gathered a pile of fallen leaves. His small frame stood straight and tall as he held the broom and smiled at Mu Wan.

“You’re up so early?” Mu Wan approached and pinched his cheek. They were much closer now than before; Qingchan let her pinch him, his little face flushed rosy.

“We must rise at six for morning practice,” Qingchan replied. “Master has gone to the bamboo grove for his morning practice. Junior Brother is by the cliffside—I took you to see him last time.”

Muwan heard this and felt a strong urge to find Liu Qianxiu. But she remembered how warm his sleeping spot still felt when she rose—he must have left only recently.

“Are you going to find Junior Brother?” Qingchan asked, tilting his head when she fell silent.

“No,” Mu Wan smiled, tugging at his topknot. “Do you still have the broom? I’ll help you sweep the fallen leaves.”

Having company naturally pleased Qingchan. Though he’d been a Taoist novice at the temple since childhood, he still retained a childlike nature, unlike Liu Qianxiu and Xuan Qingzi, who were reserved and aloof.

But they’d only swept together for a short while when a light rain began to fall. Qingchan picked up the broom, frowned, and took Mu Wan’s hand. “Sister, I’ll go bring Master an umbrella. You go bring Junior Brother one.”

Having a reason to visit Liu Qianxiu, Mu Wan readily agreed. After she nodded, Qing Chan handed her an oil-paper umbrella. Holding it open, Mu Wan hurried along the path toward the cliff edge.

The rain fell neither too hard nor too soft, pattering rhythmically on the oil-paper umbrella. Drops pooled together, trickling down onto the wild grasses by the path. Mu Wan quickened her pace and soon reached the cliff’s edge.

Liu Qianxiu sat cross-legged in meditation at the cliff’s edge, his tall, lean silhouette facing away. His blue Taoist robe was already half-soaked.

“Liu Qianxiu,” Mu Wan called out.

Liu Qianxiu snapped back to awareness, turning his head. His eyes, once hazy like distant mountain mists, gradually sharpened as he looked at her. He rose from the cushion. Mu Wan stepped forward, extending her arm to steady him.

He was too tall, and Mu Wan struggled slightly to support him. Liu Qianxiu gripped her waist with one hand while the other grasped the umbrella handle, taking it from her.

Raindrops slid down the man’s face. His cold, pale skin made the droplets look icy. Mu Wan frowned deeply, wiping his face as she said, “Didn’t you know it was raining?”

Liu Qianxiu took her hand. Their palms met—his was dry and cool.

Liu Qianxiu looked up at the falling rain and said, “It’s getting heavier.”

“You didn’t know it was raining?” Mu Wan laughed incredulously, her hand still held in his. She tilted her head back to look at him. “Nothing in the outside world can shake your pure heart, right?”

A fine misty rain fell, shrouding the cliff walls and the pine and cypress trees on the mountain in a haze, like a fairyland—a gentle breeze swept by. Liu Qianxiu lowered his gaze slightly, meeting her eyes.

“Yes.” He lowered his head to kiss her lips softly, murmuring, “The only thing that can shake my heart is you.”

The fine rain seemed laced with honey, even the cool breeze carrying a sweetness. Mu Wan tilted her head back to look at him, her eyes crinkling with laughter. She wrapped her arms around him and kissed him.

Even clad in his Taoist robes, he remained utterly captivating.

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 615

Blood Has Not Yet Run Cold ~

To scheme against the Li family and Beijiang, a large sum of silver had to be mobilized. After thinking it through for a long while, Mu Yunyao left the palace and went to Ni Yun Fang.

Caiyi and the others, following her instructions, carried the recent account books upstairs. After taking a sip from her teacup, Mu Yunyao quickly flipped through them. The room was very quiet, the abacus beads clicking crisply as they struck one another.

After reviewing most of the ledgers, Mu Yunyao carefully considered the exact amount of silver required. She was fairly satisfied with the figure. Then she lifted her gaze to Liu Liang.

“Liu Liang, is there any news from Qi Ming?”

“Reporting to Master, Qi Ming still hasn’t sent any word. However, regarding Yi Bao Xuan, this subordinate discovered someone quietly altering the account books.”

“The account books kept at Yi Bao Xuan are already edited versions. The real ledgers are all stored at Ni Yun Fang. If the Li family wants to change them, let them change them. Ignore it.” A thought stirred in Mu Yunyao’s mind, and she suddenly asked, “Liu Liang, do you know anything about Beijiang?”

Liu Liang jerked his head up, his eyes trembling sharply. “Miss, why do you suddenly ask about Beijiang?”

Mu Yunyao studied his expression, and her heart gained a few points of certainty. From Liu Liang’s reaction, her earlier guess had been right. This man was very likely from Beijiang.

“You’ve seen it yourself. The Li family is entangled with the royal court of Beijiang. I thought it would be useful to understand more. Besides, in a little over half a month, Beijiang’s envoys will arrive in the Da Li Dynasty.”

Beijiang’s envoys?

Liu Liang lowered his head. His gaze became even more hollow. After a long pause, he tightened his grip on the sword at his side, and only then did his expression gradually return to normal.

“This subordinate knows a bit about Beijiang. Beijiang’s current king is Helian Ye, the second son of the previous king. He is skilled at commanding troops, domineering by nature, and extremely ambitious. He has two full brothers, Helian Chu and Helian Tan. These three brothers trust one another and joined hands to eliminate all the other royal offspring. After Helian Ye became king, he rewarded his two brothers heavily. Inside Beijiang, there are three kings standing side by side. But outwardly, the brothers are exceptionally united, always plotting to bite off a chunk of flesh from the Da Li Dynasty…”

Mu Yunyao watched Liu Liang. His voice was still unhurried, much like usual, but if one listened closely, a faint, hard-to-detect disgust could be heard within it.

Under Mu Yunyao’s gaze, Liu Liang’s expression turned tense. “Master, do you have any orders?”

“None. I didn’t expect you to know Beijiang’s royal family in such depth.”

Liu Liang parted his lips, wanting to speak. But when his eyes met Mu Yunyao’s clear gaze, a gaze that seemed able to see through everything, his heart sank little by little. His mouth filled with bitterness.

Miss was so intelligent. From his expression and his words, she had likely already guessed at his origins. If she learned his true identity, would she still be willing to keep him?

He remembered that life when he was like a walking corpse. Then he looked at Mu Yunyao before him. Liu Liang’s face slowly turned pale. He wanted to stay by her side, even if he could only keep a humble posture, even if he could only see her occasionally and receive nothing more than her calm glance.

He was willing.

Because only at her side did he feel alive, feel that his heart could still beat, feel that his blood had not yet grown cold.

Seeing him kneeling with his head lowered, his eyes empty as though the whole world had cast him away, Mu Yunyao could not help but soften.

“I only made a passing remark. Don’t think too much. I told you long ago that as long as you don’t wish to speak, I will forever regard you as Liu Liang and won’t ask about your true identity. Of course, it’s still the same. If you want to leave, I won’t force you to stay. If there’s anything you need my help with, as long as it’s within my ability, I will certainly help you accomplish it.”

Joy surged through Liu Liang’s heart, and color slowly returned to his hollow gaze. “I want to stay by my master’s side, to be your subordinate for a lifetime.”

Mu Yunyao joked as if amused. “Then I’ve truly struck gold. I only spent six liang of silver back then, and I got a whole mountain of gold for free.”

Liu Liang looked a little at a loss. Staring at Mu Yunyao’s smile, he tried hard to lift the corners of his mouth, but he’d worn a blank face for too long, and the smile came out stiff and unnatural. He struggled for quite some time, then looked up only to find Mu Yunyao had already returned to her ledgers.

After Mu Yunyao finished checking the accounts, she carefully ran through her plan again and again, confirming there were no real gaps. Then she spoke.

“Liu Liang, once the Beijiang envoys arrive, the plans I’ve laid out can begin. Be careful. The moment you sense anything off, withdraw immediately. Do not take even the slightest risk.”

“Yes. Please rest assured, Master.”

At court, the news that Beijiang’s envoys were about to reach the capital stirred waves of commotion. The civil officials did not feel it as deeply, but among the military officials, the moment Beijiang was mentioned, none did grit their teeth in hatred.

Many places in Beijiang were still uncivilized, yet their fighting strength was terrifyingly fierce, especially their cavalry. Beijiang men grew up with horses. Driven by their environment, they lived on horseback from childhood. Once grown, their control of a mount could be called instinctive. Moreover, Beijiang men were tall and powerful. A hundred-man cavalry unit wielding heavy long blades, charging in formation, sweeping through like whistling steel, left nothing but blood and ruin in their wake. Even a thousand men found it hard to get close.

And Beijiang people were brutal by nature. Once they broke into a village, they took everything they could carry. Whatever they could not carry, they burned on the spot. The slaughter of entire villages was common, and even infants and small children were spared nothing. Prisoners who fell into Beijiang’s hands rarely survived.

“Your Majesty, this humble minister believes the Da Li Dynasty is a land of rites and propriety. Since they come as guests, we should receive Beijiang’s envoys well and let them experience our customs and people.”

“This humble minister agrees. Your Majesty, between nations, envoys are not slain. No matter what Beijiang has done in the past, sending envoys first shows an intent to befriend us. The Da Li Dynasty must not lose face by quibbling with a barbarous small state.”

Most civil officials supported taking this opportunity to befriend Beijiang, but the military officials fiercely opposed it.

“Speak of rites with Beijiang? Why don’t you ask the wronged souls of Da Li Dynasty’s common people who died beneath Beijiang blades and hooves whether they agree? Why don’t you ask the fallen soldiers who fought Beijiang on the battlefield, whether they agree?”

“Your Majesty, this humble minister has led troops against Beijiang for years and understands their nature well. They are born to plunder, with ambition beyond measure. Their visit this time is certainly not well-intentioned. Please issue an edict to strengthen defenses.”

Before long, civil and military officials were shouting themselves into a single chaotic mass.

The Emperor coughed once. Xu Li quickly stepped forward and shouted, “Silence!”

The officials immediately knelt to salute. “We beg Your Majesty’s pardon.”

The Emperor coughed twice, then looked down at Ling Wang and Yu Wang. “Do you have any good ideas?”

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 614

A Pillow Delivered Right When She Needed One ~

The Third Prince’s personal guard stood to the side, not daring to make a sound. Ever since being placed under house arrest, His Royal Highness Jin Wang had become moody and unpredictable. A few days ago, he had even ordered the beating death of a maid who washed his feet, simply because the water she brought was a bit too hot. The entire Third Prince’s residence had been plunged into a stifling gloom.

After a long while, the Third Prince finally calmed down and gave a low, heavy order, “Prepare brush and ink. I’m going to write a letter of repentance to my Imperial Father.”

Since his eyes had already recovered, it was only a matter of time before his legs stood again. The struggle for the throne had reached a critical point. He could not afford to be cast aside. Otherwise, he would never again be able to touch that lofty position.

Do kings and nobles truly have a fixed fate? Even more so for imperial sons. They were all his Imperial Father’s sons. There was no reason the throne had to fall into the hands of Leng Wang or Yu Wang. He would stake everything and fight for it.

“Yes.” The guard quickly raised the writing tools, while the Third Prince continued flipping through the booklet.

His mood was strangely buoyant, but when he reached the section about the banquet, he froze in shock.

“The Li family accused Yue Wang of not being the Emperor’s child?”

The guard nodded. “Yes. They even dragged Eldest Princess Yide into it. But His Majesty didn’t believe it at all. He executed the witness on the spot, then declared before all officials that Yue Wang would forever be his son. And the accusation also targeted Eldest Princess Yide, claiming she deliberately concealed Yue Wang’s identity, intending to confuse the imperial bloodline.”

“Hahahaha!” Hearing what Leng Wang and the Li family had done, the Third Prince burst into loud laughter. “Ling Wang is truly a fool!”

Eldest Princess Yide’s status was far too special. As an Eldest Princess, she had supported the Emperor all the way to the throne. Her bond with his Imperial Father ran extraordinarily deep. Unless someone were tired of living, no one would ever test Eldest Princess Yide’s limits.

The guard lowered his head and waited silently.

Suddenly, the Third Prince’s lips twitched. His gaze locked onto a date, and the air around him turned instantly dark and oppressive.

“The eighteenth day of the first lunar month…”

“His Majesty has already issued an edict granting a marriage between His Royal Highness Yue Wang and Wen Xian County Princess. The wedding date is set for the eighteenth day of the first lunar month.”

The Third Prince narrowed his eyes. After a long silence, he swiftly spread out the paper and began to write.

Three days later, a thick, ten-thousand-character letter of repentance was delivered to the Emperor’s desk.

In the letter, the Third Prince admitted his past crimes without reservation and expressed profound remorse. He began with his childhood memories and wrote through his blindness and the reflection he endured in darkness. Every word was sincere, every line heart-stirring. It was said that after the Emperor finished reading, he wept. Ignoring Xu Li’s attempts to dissuade him, he left the palace and went to the Third Prince’s residence in person.

Mu Yunyao sat before a bronze mirror, leisurely combing her hair and choosing which hairpin to wear.

At her side, Jin Qiao described everything with vivid animation. “Miss, it’s spread all over outside. They say when His Majesty arrived at the Third Prince’s residence, he found the Third Prince hugging one of His Majesty’s old garments and crying. It was the perfect picture of tears and snot everywhere. When he saw His Majesty, he was so overwhelmed that he toppled straight out of his chair. That old garment was from years ago, when Jin Wang fell ill, and His Majesty stayed up all night to care for him. His Majesty changed clothes the next morning before court, and the Third Prince has carefully kept that garment ever since.”

As Jin Qiao spoke, she could not help pursing her lips. It hadn’t sounded that strange when she first heard it, but repeating it now made it feel oddly unsettling. And besides, to keep clothing from so many years ago, the Third Prince’s mind truly planned far into the distance.

Mu Yunyao’s lips curled slightly. “His Royal Highness the Third Prince should be excited.” But that excitement was not for the Emperor’s visit. It was for the fact that he had finally regained his sight.

“And there’s more, Miss. They say His Royal Highness the Third Prince hasn’t cared about tea or food these days and spends every day repenting. He hasn’t shaved, hasn’t changed clothes. Add in his tear-soaked garments, and he looks miserable beyond belief. His Majesty was furious and punished the servants who were caring for him on the spot. He also said that before you and His Royal Highness Yue Wang marry, he will restore the Third Prince’s Jin Wang title. After all, as the elder brother, having no rank at all wouldn’t be appropriate. Now, many officials are watching to see whether the Third Prince’s legs can recover. Compared to supporting a stubborn, reckless Leng Wang, or a rigid, unbending Yu Wang, they’d rather support Jin Wang.”

Mu Yunyao selected a Danyang pearl-hanging hairpin and gently inserted it into her hair. After examining it for a moment, she nodded with satisfaction. “How has Ling Wang reacted?”

“Reporting to Miss, Ling Wang Manor was very quiet at first.”

Mu Yunyao raised a brow. “Quiet?” Even if he didn’t fly into a rage, Ling Wang should be looking for a way to deal with Jin Wang, to keep him from disrupting the crucial matter of selecting the Crown Prince. How could it be quiet?

“From the time His Majesty went to the Third Prince’s residence to now, three days have passed. Leng Wang only had a few people spread rumors. It doesn’t resemble the Li family’s usual style at all.” Jin Qiao was equally puzzled. “Could it be they think the Third Prince has no hope of fighting for the throne, so they’re letting him be and not bothering to deal with him?”

Mu Yunyao gave a soft laugh. “If Ling Wang could truly see things as far as you do, then this year’s Crown Prince selection might succeed without any need for deliberate courting.”

Just then, Jin Lan entered carrying a teacup. “Miss, news has just come from outside the palace. Beijiang has dispatched envoys. In a little over half a month, they’ll arrive in the capital.”

Mu Yunyao’s eyes trembled violently. She lifted her head at once. “What did you say? Beijiang has sent envoys?”

“Yes.”

By the count, the last time the two nations exchanged envoys was more than ten years ago. In recent years, relations between the Da Li Dynasty and Beijiang had grown increasingly tense. In the past few years, the Beijiang cavalry repeatedly harassed the Da Li Dynasty’s borderlands, forcing many people to abandon the frontier and move to nearby cities to survive. Even so, many still died every year. Of course, Beijiang suffered casualties as well.

The two nations had long become bitter enemies. Now, envoys arriving at this moment inevitably made one think of the Li family.

Mu Yunyao suddenly remembered something else. “Wait. If Beijiang’s envoys arrive in a little over half a month, won’t that coincide exactly with the timing of selecting the Crown Prince?”

“Yes. No one knows whether it will have an impact,” Jin Lan said, nodding.

“If this Beijiang mission truly has ties to the Li family, then this Crown Prince selection probably won’t succeed.” Mu Yunyao spoke while slowly curling her lips into a smile.

Jin Qiao looked confused. “Miss, haven’t you always hoped Yu Wang would become Crown Prince? Why do you not look anxious at all, and instead seem happy?”

Mu Yunyao’s smile deepened. “Selecting the Crown Prince is something His Majesty already has in mind. Early or late doesn’t make much difference. But Beijiang’s envoys are a different matter. That requires careful planning.”

She and Yue Wang had been planning to trap the Li family and Beijiang together. But Beijiang was far away, and messages were hard to send back and forth. Just getting the Third Prince and Beijiang to connect was already difficult, let alone anything beyond that.

Now, Beijiang’s envoys were walking right up to their doorstep.

It was truly the perfect pillow delivered at the exact moment she needed one, and she intended to seize the opportunity with both hands.

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 613

~ Only After Losing It Do You Learn to Cherish ~

Imperial Consort Li’s face twisted when she heard Mu Yunyao’s words. If she could find the one who had poisoned her, why would she have gone to such lengths? She would have had them seized long ago, interrogated, and forced to hand over an antidote. Besides, this poison was highly toxic. Whether an antidote even existed was another matter.

“Yunyao, this so-called ‘Scratch the Beauty’s Face Poison’… is there truly no other way to resolve it?”

Mu Yunyao shook her head. “No.”

Imperial Consort Li bit down hard on her lip. The last shred of hope in her eyes shattered.

“I understand. Thank you, Poisonous Lady, for today. Another day, I will certainly send a gift in thanks.”

“Your Ladyship needn’t be so polite.”

After the dazed, hollow-eyed Imperial Consort Li left with her people, Poisonous Lady blinked at Mu Yunyao.

“You did that on purpose, didn’t you? You’re pushing her toward Beijiang.”

Mu Yunyao put on an innocent expression. “I merely took her pulse normally. Where is your mind going?”

“That ‘Scratch the Beauty’s Face Poison’ is something I’ve never even heard of. Poison in the flower, antidote in the branches and leaves. Your Royal Highness, the County Princess, where did you find such a miraculous herb? Bring it out and let me take a look, broaden my horizons.” As she spoke, Poisonous Lady reached out as if to tickle Mu Yunyao.

Mu Yunyao hurriedly begged for mercy. “Alright, alright, I was wrong. I’ll tell the truth, isn’t that enough? I did indeed intend to drag Imperial Consort Li into Beijiang’s affairs.”

“Why? Do you suspect the Li family has ties with Beijiang?”

Mu Yunyao’s gaze steadied. “Not suspect. I can be certain the Li family has dealings with Beijiang’s royal court in secret.”

Poisonous Lady frowned. “Is the Li family trying to betray the country?”

“We still don’t know. The matter runs too deep, and it will take time to investigate little by little. I misled Imperial Consort Li just now for two reasons. First, to test her and see whether she showed anything unusual when Beijiang was mentioned. Second, to make her move. For so many years, the Li family has supported Ling Wang in the former court, helping him gather officials and build power, while Imperial Consort Li has controlled palace affairs in the inner court, managing the Imperial Father’s harem. She is even entangled with the Imperial Household Department. If the Li family has truly grown disloyal, what comes next will be deeply troubling.”

Poisonous Lady nodded. “Don’t worry about Imperial Consort Li’s side. With me here, before you give the word, the imperial physicians won’t diagnose anything. Her rash will never get better. After she goes back, she will definitely question the physicians. I’ll also find a way to contact a few physicians I know and help them ‘broaden their knowledge’ of poisons. I guarantee there won’t be the slightest flaw.”

Mu Yunyao smiled and nodded. “Good. You’ve worked hard.”

“Between you and me, there’s no need to say that.”

After Imperial Consort Li returned, she summoned physicians to treat her. Some admitted they had no idea, but a few acted as if enlightened, describing the “Scratch the Beauty’s Face Poison” as wondrous and terrifying, even painting a vivid picture of what the flower looked like. Any lingering luck in Imperial Consort Li’s heart vanished. She immediately sent word to the Li family, demanding they investigate thoroughly.

Imperial Consort Li was Ling Wang’s birth mother. In the current harem, she was the main force opposing Imperial Consort Qi. The Li family absolutely could not afford to abandon her. They could only contact Beijiang in secret, demanding an explanation.

This poison was unheard of. Even what the imperial physicians knew was limited, and within the Da Li Dynasty, it was something no one had even heard mentioned before. For it to suddenly appear on Imperial Consort Li, the Li family naturally began to suspect Beijiang.

Because their trade routes were being investigated and because Imperial Consort Li had met with disaster, the Li family’s atmosphere turned exceptionally gloomy. Yet within the Third Prince’s residence, the mood was the complete opposite.

A middle-aged physician carefully removed the gauze covering Ning Junjin’s eyes. “Third Prince, your eyes were once corroded by poison. Even if you regain sight, they remain extremely fragile. You must protect them carefully. For the next few days, you must not overexert yourself.”

Ning Junjin clenched his fist tightly, forcing down the storm of emotion inside him. Only when the gauze was removed and harsh light flooded in did he finally loosen. He turned and stared around him, the light in his eyes dazzling. A man who usually hid joy and rage in his heart now looked wildly elated.

“I can see. I can see again!”

The middle-aged physician smiled with confidence. “Naturally. I once promised Your Highness I would fulfill my vow and let you see the light again.”

Ning Junjin was so happy he could barely speak coherently. “Divine Physician Gu, today you have cured my eyes. I will remember this kindness forever. One day, I will repay you richly.”

“There is no need for repayment. I admire Your Highness as a person. I know the achievements you made in Jiangnan, and I respect them deeply. I truly could not bear to see you misunderstood and forced to live in darkness for the rest of your life. For now, I have only restored your sight. Your leg ailment is more severe. It will take more time, and you will inevitably suffer.”

Ning Junjin trusted this Divine Physician Gu to the utmost. He nodded at once. “I must trouble you, then. As long as my legs can return to normal, I can endure any hardship.”

“Your Highness is too courteous. Then I will go sort through the medicinal materials and see what else must be prepared.”

“Good.”

After Divine Physician Gu withdrew, Ning Junjin could no longer restrain the joy on his face. His gaze greedily drank in every corner of the world. Only after losing it once did he understand how precious what he had once taken for granted truly was. He touched his eyelids with extreme care, his expression twisting slightly from overwhelming delight.

A guard waited silently to the side. When Ning Junjin calmed a little, the guard finally spoke. “Your Highness, you ordered your subordinate to watch for news from court. I have recorded everything clearly each day. Please review it.”

Ning Junjin came back to himself. When he saw what was written in the booklet, his brows snapped together.

“The Imperial Father has decided to select the Crown Prince through officials’ nomination before the year ends. That idea came from Eldest Imperial Brother, didn’t it?”

“Yes.”

Ning Junjin gave a cold laugh. “He thinks that with me gone from court, he can hold up the heavens with one hand? Absurd! And Yu Wang and Yue Wang… so they are the kind of dogs that bite without barking. They’ve joined hands without anyone noticing, and from the start, they’ve faintly gained the Imperial Father’s support. Just thinking about it makes my blood run with murderous intent. How are our contacts?”

The guard’s expression turned difficult. “In accordance with Your Highness’s instructions, your subordinate went to contact the court officials. However, eight or nine out of ten avoided meeting me. As for the few remaining…”

Ning Junjin’s expression chilled. “And the remaining few?”

“Even when they met with me, they only mocked and jeered. None showed the slightest intention of attaching themselves again.”

Ning Junjin’s eyes filled with killing intent, almost solid. “When I was in power, these people swarmed over like flies, fawning and scraping. I’ve only fallen for a few days, and they’ve already forgotten how they once wagged their tails and begged. If I can rise again, I will make every one of them…”

His voice stopped short. Only after a long while did the murderous aura around him gradually subside.

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 612

~ Scratch the Beauty’s Face ~

Seeing Mu Yunyao’s distant yet proud expression, Imperial Consort Li could not help recalling the banquet. Back then, she had accused Mu Yunyao of secretly harming the Emperor. And now she had to come begging at Mu Yunyao’s doorstep. The humiliation burned so fiercely she nearly choked on it.

She lifted her eyes toward Eldest Princess Yide and pressed her lips together. Earlier, Eldest Princess Yide had told her to rise. To show “sincerity,” she had stubbornly refused. Now she wanted to stand, yet her legs had gone numb and weak. She could only remain kneeling as she spoke to Mu Yunyao, wishing she could crawl into a crack in the floor. The shame twisted into hatred, and the hatred only thickened.

Mu Yunyao saw through her thoughts at a glance, but she had no intention of indulging her. She lowered her eyes slightly, expression calm, and waited for Imperial Consort Li to speak.

Only after a long while did Imperial Consort Li force the words out.

“Yunyao, some time ago, I mistakenly ate something and broke out in red rashes all over my face. The imperial physicians have treated me for a long time, yet it never improved. Instead, the rashes only grew worse. I heard your medical skill is even better than the imperial physicians’, so I came to Yuhua Palace to seek an audience with Eldest Princess Yide, hoping you will take pity and treat me.”

Mu Yunyao studied her carefully.

Imperial Consort Li wore a face veil, revealing only her forehead and eyes. Even so, the skin around her forehead and eyes was mottled red. At first glance, it looked like simple irritation. But once you looked closely, you would see densely packed, tiny bumps. One look was enough to send chills crawling down a person’s spine.

“My medical skill is shallow,” Mu Yunyao said lightly. “I’m afraid I cannot help Your Ladyship.”

Imperial Consort Li immediately panicked.

“Yunyao, I know I offended you before. I even questioned your medical skills in front of everyone. But at the time, I was only worried about His Majesty’s health, not deliberately targeting you. Later, after hearing from the imperial physicians how astonishing your skill is, I truly admired you. That’s why I came to Yuhua Palace. Please, for the sake of my being your elder, help me treat this.”

She was afraid Mu Yunyao would refuse, so she had no choice but to drag out seniority.

Eldest Princess Yide’s brows tightened at once.

“Li. I only knew you used to act arrogantly and domineeringly. I did not realize you also enjoy using power to pressure others.”

“You call yourself Yunyao’s elder, so you think you can ignore her wishes and force her to treat you. Then I am also your elder. Does that mean I can ignore your wishes and force you to do things as well?”

Imperial Consort Li’s face drained white. She shook her head frantically, kneeling to beg.

“This consort spoke without thinking. Please forgive me, Your Royal Highness. These past days, I have been tormented beyond endurance. I was anxious, and my words were not given proper consideration. Please forgive me, Your Royal Highness.”

Even after hearing her, Eldest Princess Yide did not relax her frown. Her expression remained stern and displeased.

Imperial Consort Li remembered what Eldest Princess Yide had said earlier. Gritting her teeth, she turned toward Mu Yunyao and bowed deeply from her kneeling position.

“Yunyao. What I said just now was wrong…”

Mu Yunyao immediately stepped aside, refusing to accept that bow. Yet she answered with startling ease.

“Your Ladyship needn’t do this. I’ll treat you.”

“My skill is shallow, so I cannot promise I can cure you. However, I have a friend named Poisonous Lady. She is the one who previously offered the prescription for treating the epidemic. Your Ladyship should have heard of her. Her knowledge of medicine and poisons is extremely profound. If you trust me, I can ask her to help.”

Imperial Consort Li’s eyes lit up with joy.

“That would be wonderful. Yunyao, thank you.”

No matter how furious she was inside, Mu Yunyao agreeing to treat her meant her humiliation today was not in vain.

Mu Yunyao smiled and nodded. “Then please go to the side hall first, Your Ladyship. Wash your face thoroughly with clean water. It looks like you’ve applied for medicine. If we want a clearer diagnosis, it’s better to clean it off.”

Imperial Consort Li nodded again and again. “Alright. I’ll go now.”

After Imperial Consort Li withdrew, Mu Yunyao turned back to Eldest Princess Yide.

“Thank you for keeping her here today, Grandmother.”

“It’s only because you told me before that you wanted to investigate why Imperial Consort Li can bear children.” Eldest Princess Yide’s tone was cool. “Otherwise, I wouldn’t have let her step through Yuhua Palace’s gates.”

Mu Yunyao’s eyes curved with a smile. “Then I’ll go to the side hall now.”

“Go.”

Mu Yunyao had someone summon Poisonous Lady. The two of them entered the side hall together to examine Imperial Consort Li. They took turns checking her pulse. When they finished, they exchanged a look, and both shook their heads slightly.

Neither of them found anything abnormal in Imperial Consort Li’s pulse. It seemed they would have to look for the cause among Li Qingzhou’s other sons.

Seeing Mu Yunyao remain silent for a long time after taking her pulse, Imperial Consort Li’s heart tightened.

“Yunyao, what exactly is wrong with the rash on my face?”

“If I’m not mistaken, Your Ladyship truly did eat something you shouldn’t have.” Mu Yunyao finally spoke. “The poison you’re suffering from is called Scratch the Beauty’s Face. This poison comes from Beijiang. It is refined from a rare flower and grass, extremely scarce and very difficult to obtain. In the Da Li Dynasty, it’s exceptionally uncommon.”

“Does Your Ladyship remember what you ate before your face became like this?”

As she spoke, Mu Yunyao watched Imperial Consort Li’s expression closely. Yet after hearing “Beijiang,” Imperial Consort Li’s face did not change in any meaningful way. She only looked more frantic about her own face.

“Yunyao, then how do I cure it? Do you have confidence?”

Mu Yunyao’s thoughts turned. Does Imperial Consort Li truly not know about the Li family’s entanglement with Beijiang, or is she simply too good at hiding it for anyone to detect?

“Your Ladyship, this poison can be said to be extremely easy to cure, and it can also be said to be incurable.”

Imperial Consort Li stared. “How can it be both? ‘Easy to cure’ and ‘incurable’ aren’t those contradictions?”

“It sounds contradictory, but it isn’t,” Mu Yunyao explained. “It’s easy to cure because the plant used to refine Scratch the Beauty’s Face is unusual. The flower is poison, but the branches and leaves are the antidote.”

“However, it must be the branches and leaves of the very same plant that was used to refine the poison. Using other plants will not work.”

“Normally, when refining poison, the maker will keep some leftover branches and leaves in case of need, and destroy the rest. But some people keep no antidote at all. In that case, the victim can only suffer until death, because there’s nothing that can cure this poison. That is what makes it ‘incurable.’”

Imperial Consort Li’s face turned ashen.

“Y-you’re telling the truth?”

“This poison is extremely obscure. The imperial physicians likely didn’t think of it. Still, Your Ladyship can simply ask them directly. Once asked, they will certainly recall it.”

Imperial Consort Li looked at Mu Yunyao with suspicion.

So many imperial physicians could not see it, yet Mu Yunyao recognized it at once. Could Mu Yunyao have placed this poison herself?

Sensing her doubt, Mu Yunyao’s smile did not change in the slightest.

“Your Ladyship, if you want to detoxify, the best path is to find the one who poisoned you. Only then is there a chance you can obtain the antidote.”

Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 611

~ When You Ask for Help, You Must Have the Right Attitude ~

Mu Yunyao had only just returned to Yuhua Palace when Poisonous Lady came rushing over right behind her.

“Yunyao, there’s news from Jin Wang’s side. His eyes can already see a little, faintly. I’m planning to cure his eyes first. As for his legs, there’s no rush. If I heal him too quickly, wouldn’t that be letting him off too easily? I also gave special instructions. When treating him, make him suffer more. The deeper the pain, the deeper the hatred. That way it’ll ferment properly.”

Mu Yunyao pressed her lips together, barely holding back a laugh, and nodded. “Mm.”

With his eyes restored, Jin Wang would definitely be unable to sit still. He would stir the muddy waters of the Crown Prince selection sooner or later.

Poisonous Lady finished speaking, then suddenly stood up and leaned close. She reached out and kneaded Mu Yunyao’s cheek, narrowing her eyes like an interrogator.

“Weren’t you at Ni Yun Fang today embroidering your wedding dress?”

“Yes. What about it?”

“Then why do you have a dent on the side of your cheek?” Poisonous Lady’s tone turned sharper. “That’s the kind of mark you get from sleeping too deeply. And Yue Wang went out with you, too. Tell me clearly. What exactly happened?”

The chill in her voice was unmistakable. Even if it were Yue Wang, if he had bullied Mu Yunyao, Poisonous Lady would make him pay.

Mu Yunyao understood what she was implying and instantly flushed. She hurriedly pressed Poisonous Lady back into her seat.

“What are you thinking? Am I the kind of person with no sense of propriety?”

“How would I know?” Poisonous Lady snorted. “Plenty of women look clever as can be, but the moment love is involved, they turn into fools. Like me back then. I was so smart, and in the end, I still went blind and fell for that Han-surnamed bastard.”

Her disgust was so intense that it sounded like she wanted to go back in time and slap her past self awake.

Mu Yunyao explained helplessly. “These past few days have been exhausting. I fell asleep on the way back. The dent was probably left by accident.”

“Oh. Good.” Poisonous Lady nodded. She also felt Mu Yunyao wouldn’t let herself be taken advantage of.

Just then, Jin Lan hurried in. “Miss, Imperial Consort Li has come to request an audience.”

“Imperial Consort Li?” Mu Yunyao’s brows flickered. “Wasn’t she confined to quarters?”

“Yes, but after you left the palace, Imperial Consort Li went straight to plead before His Majesty. Her facial condition is too severe. The imperial physicians are already at a loss, and they still haven’t found the cause. So she wants to ask you for help.”

“When she went, many court officials were present. Ling Wang and Chancellor Li both pleaded for her. His Majesty had no choice. He didn’t issue an order forcing you to treat her, but he also didn’t continue her confinement.”

Mu Yunyao hadn’t even responded when Poisonous Lady let out a cold laugh.

“Hah. At the banquet,  Imperial Consort Li accused you of harboring ill intent. Now she has the nerve to come begging you to cure her face. That thickness of skin is beyond saving. Yunyao, don’t bother with her. People like that will bite back after you help them.”

Mu Yunyao smiled lightly, gesturing for Poisonous Lady to calm down. “Don’t worry. I won’t agree easily. But she’s an imperial consort, and she came all the way to Yuhua Palace. Since I’m in the palace, I have to go take a look.”

“Don’t say anything reckless, in case there are ears in the walls. I might need you to help later.”

Poisonous Lady blinked, startled. “Help? Don’t tell me you’re really going to repay hatred with kindness and treat Imperial Consort Li’s rash?”

Mu Yunyao rolled her eyes. “Did you forget what I asked you to investigate? This is a chance to take Imperial Consort Li’s pulse personally. Don’t you want to see for yourself why she’s the only one among Li Qingzhou’s offspring who can bear children?”

Poisonous Lady’s eyes lit up in realization. She nodded quickly. “Then call me over later so I can take her pulse too. Worst case, I treat her the way I treated Jin Wang. First, cure her, then ruin her. I’m experienced.”

Mu Yunyao nodded. “Good.”

In Yuhua Palace’s main hall, Imperial Consort Li was kneeling on the ground. A thick veil covered her face. She kept her head lowered, crying without pause.

“Your Royal Highness, please, you must help me.”

Eldest Princess Yide sat above, holding a finely polished hand warmer. Her expression was flat, without the slightest ripple.

“Imperial Consort Li, begging me is useless. I don’t know medicine.”

Imperial Consort Li lifted her head, looking timidly toward Eldest Princess Yide. “Your Royal Highness, this consort wishes to ask Wen Xian Commandery Princess for help, so…”

“You want Yunyao’s help, then go beg Yunyao.” Eldest Princess Yide’s voice turned even colder. “I’m her grandmother, but I can’t decide for her.”

Imperial Consort Li’s heart burned with fury, but she forced herself into a pitiful expression. “Your Royal Highness…”

Mama Qu stepped in quickly. “Your Royal Highness, the Commandery Princess has returned. She’s at the door, asking to pay her respects.”

Eldest Princess Yide’s expression softened at once. “Bring Yunyao in.”

The words Imperial Consort Li hadn’t managed to say jammed in her throat. She ground her teeth quietly, forcing herself to endure.

Mu Yunyao entered and greeted properly. “Yunyao pays respects to Grandmother. Imperial Consort Li is also here, so I offer my greetings as well.”

Mu Yunyao performed a half-curtsy while Imperial Consort Li was still kneeling on the floor. The contrast made Imperial Consort Li feel humiliated to the bone. She even suspected Mu Yunyao had come on purpose just to watch her suffer.

But she needed help, so she could only force a smile. “Yunyao needn’t be so formal.”

Eldest Princess Yide pulled Mu Yunyao to her side and asked with a smile, “Didn’t you go to Ni Yun Fang today? Why are you back so early?”

Mu Yunyao hugged Eldest Princess Yide’s arm and spoke in a soft, coaxing tone.

“These past few days, I’ve left the palace again and again and couldn’t properly keep you company. Today, when I saw the heavy snow outside, I suddenly remembered that you once said you liked rose tea brewed with snow water. So I came back early to have people sweep up plum-heart snow so that I can brew tea for you.”

Eldest Princess Yide’s smile deepened. She’d said that months ago, yet Yunyao still remembered it. Warmth flooded her heart.

“You’ve always been the most filial and the most thoughtful. Later, go to my storeroom and pick some beautiful jewelry. In a few days, your mourning period will be over. You can’t keep dressing so plainly. I have plenty of treasures tucked away. It depends on whether your eyes are sharp enough to pick them out.”

“Then Yunyao won’t be polite.” Mu Yunyao’s eyes curved. “I’ll open them wide and pick carefully.”

The two chatted happily, leaving Imperial Consort Li stranded to the side like a piece of dead air.

Imperial Consort Li bit down hard, watching them talk as if she didn’t exist. Finally, she seized an opening and forced her way in.

“Wen Xian Commandery Princess, I came today to ask a favor. I hope the Commandery Princess will help me no matter what.”

Mu Yunyao turned to look at her. The warmth in her smile faded into cool distance.

“Yunyao is dull. I wonder what matter I could help Your Ladyship with?”

Incurable Chapter 57 Part 2

Incense burned throughout the Taoist temple, its sandalwood scent more potent than at home. Mu Wan’s breathing grew heavier. Liu Qianxiu glanced down at her. Once she seemed nearly asleep, he rose to leave.

The instant he stood up, Mu Wan’s fingers tightened around his hand.

The room was quiet, bathed in gentle sunlight. Mu Wan’s palm was warm, and though her fingers clutched his, she showed no sign of opening her eyes. He sat back down, propping his other arm beside her, and leaned down to kiss her forehead.

“Still awake?” his voice was soft.

Her eyes remained closed, offering no reply. “Where are you going?”

His lips touched her cheek, a fleeting, soothing kiss. Liu Qianxiu said, “I’m going to prepare dinner. You sleep first. I’ll wake you later.”

Mu Wan didn’t answer. She had already drifted off.

Mu Wan lay on her side, her thick, jet-black hair spilling around the pillow. Her small, palm-sized face was exceptionally fair, delicate brows still slightly furrowed as if she’d left words unsaid.

His eyes held an unwavering tenderness. Liu Qianxiu pressed a light kiss to her lips, released her hand, and rose to leave.

Mu Wan slept soundly and deeply. When she awoke, shadows had already settled over the room. She vaguely recalled that Liu Qianxiu had mentioned he would prepare dinner before she fell asleep. Judging by the time, it must be nearly dinner hour.

She rose from the bed, slipped on her shoes, and opened the door to step outside.

As the door opened, the calming, invigorating scent of sandalwood filled her nostrils. The sky was ablaze with crimson clouds, a beauty so pure and clear it lifted her spirits effortlessly.

The moment Mu Wan stepped outside, Qing Chan spotted her. He was still holding the toy she’d bought for him, trotting over with a cheerful call, “Sister~ You’re awake?”

The little Taoist disciple wore a Taoist robe and a topknot, looking exceptionally adorable as a miniature Taoist priest. Mu Wan reached out to pinch the topknot on his head and asked with a smile, “Where are your Junior Brother and Master?”

“Junior Brother is preparing dinner, and Master is in seclusion...” Qing Chan replied.

No sooner had he finished speaking than a voice called out, “Qing Chan.”

The voice carried a hint of age and ethereality. Mu Wan paused slightly, lifting her eyes to see Xuan Qingzi standing at the main hall’s entrance, clad in Taoist robes.

Xuan Qingzi appeared to be in his sixties. He wore his hair long, the black-and-white strands tied into a Taoist topknot. His dark-colored robe clung to his lean frame, his features sharp and austere.

Mu Wan regarded him, bowing politely and greeting, “Greetings, Master.”

Xuan Qingzi knew Liu Qianxiu and Mu Wan would come. Qingyuan Monastery was merely a place for him and Qing Chan to practice seclusion. He held no qualms about a woman visiting. He gave a slight nod in response.

Taoist priests often carried an aura of cool detachment, but Mu Wan didn’t feel coldly dismissed. Standing there, however, she found herself at a loss for words. Just as awkwardness threatened to settle in, Liu Qianxiu’s voice reached her.

“Master.”

Xuan Qingzi turned, meeting Liu Qianxiu’s gaze. His stern eyes softened with a hint of affection. Xuan Qingzi was an old friend of Liu Qianxiu’s grandfather, having known him since childhood and essentially watching him grow up. To Liu Qianxiu, Xuan Qingzi was also an elder.

After exchanging greetings, Liu Qianxiu introduced Mu Wan to Xuan Qingzi. Xuan Qingzi nodded in acknowledgment, and the group proceeded to the back courtyard for dinner.

After dinner, Xuan Qingzi and his disciple prepared for evening study. Normally, when the master was absent, Mu Wan could go and flirt with Liu Qianxiu. With Xuan Qingzi present, she dared not overstep her bounds.

“Go to your room and read,” Liu Qianxiu said, having brought her some books earlier to keep her occupied. “I’ll return as soon as possible.”

“Just focus on your evening practice,” Mu Wan replied with a smile. Ever since they’d met, she’d been constantly clinging to him, and he hadn’t been able to practice properly.

Now, with Xuan Qingzi present, she couldn’t very well let him return early.

Liu Qianxiu didn’t reply, merely ruffling her hair. Mu Wan, like a kitten being stroked, gazed at him with a smile and whispered, “I’ll head back first.”

“Wait.”

As Mu Wan rose to leave, Xuan Qingzi, seated beside the low table, suddenly called her back. Mu Wan and Liu Qianxiu turned to look. Xuan Qingzi stood up from beside the table.

He walked to the bookcase beside the main hall and retrieved an object. It was a small square box, looking somewhat aged yet clean and tidy, exuding a simple, ancient charm.

He handed the box to Mu Wan.

“This is for you,” Xuan Qingzi stated.

Xuan Qingzi’s expression was always serene and stern. Seeing him offer the box, Mu Wan felt a flicker of surprise. However, since Liu Qianxiu regarded him as an elder, this gift could be considered a present from an elder to her.

Mu Wan accepted it without refusal.

Inside the box lay a jade pendant, its material smooth and lustrous, its age evident.

Mu Wan retired for the night, leaving only three people in the main hall. Xuan Qingzi, eyes closed in meditation, addressed Liu Qianxiu.

“When is the wedding?”

Liu Qianxiu gave a slight nod. “The eighth day of next month.”

“Mm.” Xuan Qingzi responded softly, acknowledging the information.

Qing Chan sat on Xuan Qingzi’s other side, his small hand propping his cheek. He glanced at his master, then at his junior disciple. After a moment, he asked, “Junior Brother, now that you have Sister in your heart, is there still room for the Practice?”

A child’s thoughts are always simple, believing the heart is unwavering—that having one thing leaves no space for another.

Xuan Qingzi slowly opened his eyes, gazing at his young disciple. His voice was deep and steady as he replied, “Qing Chan, the human heart is vast. It can hold both the Practice and people.”

Incurable Chapter 57 Part 1

On weekends, Liu Qianxiu doesn’t work. The Liu residence has been without its owner for a long time. After Mu Wan and Liu Qianxiu stayed overnight, the house bustled with activity this morning.

When Liu Qianxiu isn’t working, Mu Wan also gives herself a weekend off. That morning, Liu Qianxiu went to his morning meditation. Only after he finished and returned to their room did Mu Wan finally roll over and wake up.

Morning thoughts were particularly delicate and sensitive. Entwined in each other’s arms, their affection and sweetness doubled compared to other times. Finally, Liu Qianxiu picked up Mu Wan. After putting on shoes and changing clothes, he led her by the hand to the dining room for breakfast.

The Liu residence was built in the style of an ancient garden estate. Aside from their own three-story detached pavilion, most structures were two- or single-story. Long corridors connected the buildings, lined with greenery or dotted with pavilions.

After last night’s engagement banquet, an autumn rain had fallen. The greenery within the estate glistened with freshness. Walking along the corridors, the scene carried a distinct air of classical elegance.

Areas with abundant greenery also had fresher air. After breakfast, Mu Wan let Liu Qianxiu lead her on a few laps around the grounds. The Liu residence was vast. It took over an hour to explore it all.

After their stroll, the designer delivered the wedding gowns, arriving just in time. Back at the pavilion, Mu Wan slipped inside to try them on, anticipation growing with every step.

There were multiple gowns—both Chinese and Western styles. Mu Wan tried them all before settling on a simple red bridal robe. Her striking, alluring beauty suited the vibrant crimson perfectly. The floor-length red gown draped elegantly, evoking the aura of Hong Kong stars from 1980s TV dramas—both dignified and enchanting.

Mu Wan hadn’t fussed over the gown—she only wanted to look good. Yet, slipping it on and glimpsing her reflection, she was unexpectedly moved, a quiet awe blooming as seriousness and anticipation rose unbidden in her chest.

Staff members were about to open the door, but Liu Qianxiu was still waiting outside. Mu Wan’s heart skipped a beat. She raised her hand and gestured, “Just a moment.” Brides often feel shy during fittings, and the staff understood, smiling at her request.

Mu Wan glanced at herself twice more, then smiled at the attendant. “That’s fine.”

The door opened. Mu Wan stepped out, heart fluttering. Liu Qianxiu stood there, eyes dark and shimmering with emotion, a faint red hue lighting his gaze. As she looked up, nerves and anticipation mingled, her smile a ripple of hope on still water.

Mu Wan’s pulse quickened. She couldn’t say if it was nerves or excitement. Flicking her sleeves, she straightened up, her smile lively yet tentative. ‘What do you think?’ she asked, voice tinged with vulnerability.

“Hmm.” Liu Qianxiu’s expression softened slightly. He quietly smoothed the collar at her neck, lifted the corners of his lips, and said in a deep voice, “Beautiful.”

Mu Wan laughed, flinging herself into his arms. Her laughter was light but edged with nervous elation. Liu Qianxiu held her, steady and warm as ever. Standing flat-footed, Mu Wan fit beneath his chin, and her heartbeat drummed with anticipation as she leaned in. Noticing her hesitation, he steadied her waist gently, inviting trust.

A deep red sash circled her waist. Her pregnancy was still early. Her belly was not yet showing. Her waist remained slender and light.

Liu Qianxiu braced her as she rose on tiptoe, her lips near his ear. The warmth of her breath, scented with rouge, teased his skin. emotion flickered in his eyes as he took in her nearness.

“Was it better than last night?” she murmured. Her voice was barely audible, yet utterly bewitching. The moment the words left her lips, the man’s hand resting on her waist visibly stiffened.

Lowering herself, heat buzzed under Mu Wan’s skin, as if fire spread from her soles, igniting her whole body. Her heart thudded, cheeks flushed, smile trembling with expectation. She tilted her head, the pale line of her neck bared, waiting breathlessly for his answer.

He lowered his gaze to meet hers, his eyes seeming to glow with a cinnabar-like hue. Sliding his hand into her hair, he gave her earlobe a subtle pinch.

Her cheeks flushed deeper. He murmured softly, “Naturally, you looked more beautiful last night.”

The more ascetic and detached a man appeared, the more alluring he was. Heart-stirring, truly. Especially when subtle, suggestive words came from his lips—he possessed such an ethereal, otherworldly bearing.

Mu Wan chuckled softly, poking him gently. “Master Liu truly has an eye for beauty.”

After trying on the wedding gown, the designer discussed and finalized the last few minor details with Mu Wan. Liu Qianxiu sat nearby, occasionally offering simple yet useful suggestions.

Master Liu’s aesthetic sense far surpassed hers.

With the gown finalized, they moved to set the wedding date and plan the ceremony. Naturally, this required input from the elders, especially Grandma Mei.

The wedding date was ultimately set for mid-October, with the ceremony planning entrusted to Mei Yaozhi. Having spent years mingling in wealthy social circles, she’d attended countless weddings and was well-connected in such matters.

This left the couple themselves with some free time. Before the wedding, Liu Qianxiu took two days off and brought Mu Wan to Qingyuan Temple.

Even in Xiacheng, October brought a hint of autumn chill, and Qingyuan Mountain felt especially crisp and clear. Standing before the temple gates, Mu Wan gazed back at the towering mountains and deep valleys, her spirit feeling remarkably expansive.

They arrived in the afternoon. Liu Qianxiu knocked on the door, and Xiao Qingchan came running to open it, her face beaming with delight.

“Junior Brother, Sister~”

Before their visit, Liu Qianxiu had called Master Xuan Qingzi, so Xiao Qingchan had known they were coming and had been excited all day. Since becoming pregnant, Mu Wan had grown even more affectionate toward children than before. Last time, she hadn’t known that Liu Qianxiu’s “senior disciple” was a seven or eight-year-old young monk. This time, she came prepared, even bringing a gift for Qingchan.

“Thank you, Sister, ~” Qingchan took the gift, naturally delighted. His cheeks flushed with joy as he led them inside, saying, “Master is in seclusion. He said you should rest first.”

Liu Qianxiu took the luggage, and the two headed to the room Mu Wan had stayed in last time.

The room was tidy and almost unchanged since Mu Wan’s departure. After telling them to rest, Qingchan left, remembering to close the door behind him.

Climbing the mountain had tired Mu Wan. The afternoon sun slanted into the room at three o’clock, and she rubbed her eyes. Since becoming pregnant, Mu Wan had been prone to drowsiness. Seeing her rub her eyes, Liu Qianxiu walked over to her side.

Seeing him approach, Mu Wan simply leaned against him, her breath warming the space between his chest. He gently stroked her hair and said, “Why don’t you take a nap first, hm?”

The last syllable was particularly indulgent. Mu Wan felt a sweetness in her heart. She hugged him and pouted, “Stay with me.”

“Alright.” Liu Qianxiu pinched her earlobe. She giggled and dodged away, scampering to the bedside and lying down.

Liu Qianxiu picked up a book, sat on the bedside, and took her hand. His palm was dry and cool. Mu Wan interlaced her fingers with his, drowsily closing her eyes.
