Pampered Poisonous Royal Wife Chapter 125

Chapter 125: Sharing in the Honor

Seeing that Su Qingwu’s words were firm, Governor Zhang knew it would not be appropriate to urge him to stay. He quickly had someone bring over the prepared gifts.

“Lord Su has had a tiring journey coming and going. These are some simple foods for you and the Imperial Guard brothers to eat on the road.”

“Many thanks, Governor Zhang. Farewell.”

Mounting his horse, Su Qingwu tightened his grip on the reins. The fine steed beneath him shifted uneasily. He turned back to glance at Mu Yunyao, and for a single instant, waves surged within his deep eyes.

Mu Yunyao’s heart startled. She wanted to distinguish the emotions in those eyes more carefully, but Su Qingwu had already urged his horse forward, leaving behind only a handsome, elegant figure.

After galloping all the way out of Jingling City, Su Qingwu could not help tightening the reins and look back toward the city gate.

One of his attendants could not stop himself from speaking. “My lord, today is the Mid-Autumn Festival. The whole of Jingling City is filled with the fragrance of osmanthus. It is truly enchanting. Why did you not agree to Governor Zhang’s request and stay for one night before leaving?”

Their schedule was not that urgent.

“No matter how beautiful the scenery is, it cannot compare to the splendor of Xiling. You may immerse yourself in it for a moment, but can you remain here for a lifetime? Better to withdraw early, lest beautiful scenery disturb the mind…”

Su Qingwu’s expression cooled. Clear light flashed through his phoenix eyes before finally settling into complete calm.

“Let us go.”

For a while, Mu Yunyao could not understand the meaning of Su Qingwu’s final glance. In the end, she simply threw it to the back of her mind.

Judging from the current situation, the Su family had not discovered anything regarding the previous Splendid Rivers and Mountains screen. Since that was the case, there was nothing to worry about.

Governor Zhang and the Governor’s wife wished to keep her in the residence for a meal. But after Mu Yunyao said she wanted to return home to accompany Mother, they did not insist. After all, today was the Mid-Autumn Festival. Wanting to spend it with family was only human nature.

Governor Zhang specially assigned several guards to escort Mu Yunyao and the two pieces of imperial calligraphy back to Jinxiu Garden.

Steward Qin led Wei Yi, Yun Chun, and the others to wait at the entrance. Seeing Mu Yunyao invite the two pieces of calligraphy down from the carriage, they all knelt and kowtowed in thanks for His Majesty’s grace.

The surrounding commoners who had come to watch the excitement blocked the street so tightly that not even water could pass through. Now, seeing the two pieces of imperial calligraphy, their faces flushed with excitement.

Many people who often went to Buxian Tower to drink tea wore expressions of shared honor, as though the glory belonged to them as well. In their hearts, they became absolutely certain. From now on, they would never go to any other tea house again.

Niyun Pavilion and Buxian Tower were both places with signboards personally bestowed by His Majesty. Could other embroidery pavilions and tea houses compare?

In Jingling City, Mu Yunyao was the first ordinary commoner to receive His Majesty’s rewards. This honor threw the entire city into a fervor. The commoners spontaneously rushed to tell one another, as though they themselves had received the reward.

From this moment onward, Niyun Pavilion and Buxian Tower would become symbols of all Jingling City. No one would be able to shake their position.

Once the calligraphy arrived, Steward Qin took out money pouches to thank the guards who had escorted it. Then he hurriedly had the calligraphy enshrined.

Before long, people from various residences came to deliver gifts. They all used the excuse of celebrating Buxian Tower’s opening. Mu Yunyao instructed people to carefully record each family’s gifts in a register. In the future, such records would be useful for many things.

After a bout of busyness, the crowd finally dispersed only when the sky was nearing dusk. Mu Yunyao directly brought the two pieces of calligraphy back home so that Su Qing could admire them carefully.

Seeing Mu Yunyao’s somewhat casual attitude, Su Qing cried out again and again. She wanted to smack her twice, yet could not bear to be harsh. In the end, she could only glare at her twice.

“This is calligraphy bestowed by His Majesty. You must not treat it lightly. I could have gone to Jinxiu Garden to see it myself. Why did you have to bring it here?”

“What does it matter? In any case, His Majesty bestowed them upon me. I brought them here for you to see. His elderly self would not be so petty.”

Su Qing could not help glaring at her again. Only then did she look at the two pieces of calligraphy before her as though they were treasures.

“Calligraphy written by His Majesty’s imperial brush truly is different. Look at these characters. No matter how one looks at them, they carry a kind of majestic authority. Perhaps this is dragon aura.”

Mu Yunyao could not help laughing softly.

“Mother, if the characters written by His Majesty carry dragon aura, then do you think His Majesty himself grows dragon scales?”

“You naughty girl, you must not speak nonsense!”

Su Qing hurriedly pressed her palms together and bowed toward the calligraphy.

“The child is ignorant. May His Majesty not take offense. Hurry over and kowtow to admit your mistake!”

Seeing Su Qing’s serious expression, Mu Yunyao could only step forward and bow with her before the calligraphy. Under her breath, she muttered a few words.

“Your Majesty, if you are truly as wise and mighty as Mother imagines, then properly punish that Jin Wang and the Su family. They are the real rebellious officials and traitors. You even accepted my tea, so if anything happens in the future, you must favor me a little.”

Hearing her muttering, Su Qing feared she would say something even more treasonous.

“Yao’er, you must not speak recklessly. Do you understand?”

“Yes, yes. Mother, rest assured. I was not speaking recklessly. I was asking His Majesty for protection. Today, Eunuch Xu even had someone pass along a message to me, saying that the tea leaves I sent have already been accepted by His Majesty. If we return to the Su family in the future, I hope His elderly self will consider the face of my gift and bribe and help us a little more.”

Su Qing tapped her nose, torn between laughter and helplessness.

“His Majesty possesses all under Heaven. What could he possibly lack? How could he take notice of that bit of tea of yours?”

“Mother, now that is where you sound like an outsider. Although His Majesty possesses all under Heaven, there are probably very few people who are truly sincere toward him. That seat may look awe-inspiring, but in truth, every day is filled with sinister schemes and hidden calculations. Even his own sons are constantly staring at the seat beneath him. Perhaps his days may not be as comfortable as ours.”

“What nonsense.”

Su Qing quickly pushed her up.

“Stop speaking nonsense here. Go see whether Shopkeeper Qin and the others have arrived.”

“Yes.”

Mu Yunyao glanced once more at the two pieces of calligraphy, her eyes curving slightly.

To be fair, these two pieces of calligraphy were indeed very well written. They looked disciplined in structure and magnificent in force. Just by looking at the characters, an image surfaced in her mind of an elder who held the power of life and death.

His face was gentle, yet every lift of his hand and step of his foot could influence the fate of all under Heaven. His body was like a mountain, his eyes held stars, and life and death, reward and punishment were all held within his grasp.

In her previous life, she had moved between the Su family and Jin Wang’s Residence. Her status had been low, so naturally, she had never had the fortune to see His Majesty. She had only heard of his deeds and felt that he should be a wise ruler.

Now that she saw this calligraphy, she could only hope that the man resembled his writing, and that he truly was as wise and mighty as she imagined.

Steward Qin had already brought Wei Yi, Yun Chun, and the others to the Su residence. He was looking with great interest at the arrangements in the residence, yet the more he looked, the less sure he felt.

This place had been arranged with extreme refinement. Every pot of flowers and every blade of grass had been chosen with care. Thinking again of the way Jinxiu Garden looked after its renovations, Steward Qin could not help sighing inwardly.

Miss Mu and His Highness truly had very different temperaments.

His Highness’s residence was also large, but more than half of it had been turned into training grounds. Even the rooms were cold and cheerless upon entering. In the past, Steward Qin had not felt much about it. But now, compared with Miss Mu’s home, His Highness’s residence hardly seemed like a place meant for people to live.

“Steward Qin, please come sit in the hall.”

Steward Qin quickly returned to himself and said with a face full of smiles, “If there is anything we can help with, Miss, please simply give the order.”

“Everything is almost ready.”

As Mu Yunyao spoke, Jin Lan walked over.

“Miss, should the things be arranged inside the hall, or placed in the courtyard?”

“The weather is nice, so place them in the courtyard. It will be perfect for admiring the moon. What does Steward Qin think?”

“I will follow Miss’s wishes.”

“Then I will first go change clothes. Later, we still need to worship the moon together.”

Mu Yunyao returned to her room. She could still hear the laughter and cheerful voices coming from the courtyard, and the corners of her lips could not help lifting along with them.

Time truly passed quickly. Before she knew it, half a year had already gone by.

Everything had gradually entered the proper path. In another year, she would be able to return to the Su family and properly settle accounts with those people.

She only hoped that when the time came, and they met again, Su Qingwu would not be too surprised.
