There was no major bleeding. It likely hadn’t reached the heart, and though Mu Wan’s breathing was fast and shallow, there were no obvious signs of a collapsed lung. For the moment, it looked like an external injury.

After her shower that morning, Mu Wan had changed into a cream-colored camisole. Now the fabric over her chest was soaked through with blood.

Liu Qianxiu moved the strap aside and pulled the neckline down slightly to examine the wound.

The injury, raw and exposed, met the air. As Liu Qianxiu leaned closer, a cool breath carrying the faint scent of disinfectant brushed over her skin, and the pain made her suck in a sharp breath.

At the sight of it, Lin Wei clapped a hand over her mouth.

Mu Wan laughed as she rolled the window back up. Then she started the car and drove away.

It was the classic old-city setup: cramped, worn-down apartments in an excellent location. The buildings were shabby, but the neighborhood was convenient, the shops and facilities nearby were complete, and living there was comfortable enough.

Mu Wan had only been out of school for two years. Two years of acting had earned her enough for a down payment and not much more, so she was still paying off the mortgage month by month.

The apartment itself was old. The previous owner’s renovation had been stuck in an eighties style, and the furniture and appliances were all worn out. The neighborhood might have been old, but it was far from empty. It was dinnertime now. Elderly men and women returning from the market walked along with baskets of vegetables in hand, chatting in dialect and making plans to head to the little public square after dinner to dance. Ivy climbed across half the exterior walls, winding around the iron bars outside the stairwell windows. The whole aging complex was thick with the warmth and bustle of ordinary life.

Mu Wan’s building was in the last row, first on the left. The entire complex had only six buildings in two rows, so it was easy enough to find. She pushed open the stairwell door, climbed to the third floor, took out her key, and unlocked the apartment on the left.

She wasn’t lonely. She didn’t need a cat for company. If there were a cat in the house, that would only be one more thing to worry about. Neither she nor the cat would really be free.

Thinking of cats brought back the scene at the hospital—the way the man had lifted his lashes, the fine broken lights laid beneath his eyes.

Mu Wan raised an arm to cover her face and let out a low laugh.

She had had a long day, and after dinner she went straight to sleep. She slept dreamlessly through the night, only to be woken in the morning by her ringtone.

When she opened her eyes, the sky beyond the window was still a blanket of dull gray. It wasn’t raining, but it hadn’t cleared either.

The rainy season left everything damp. Even the air felt wet against the skin. Mu Wan picked up her phone. The screen read Li Nan. She answered and greeted him lazily.

“Morning, boss.”

After the call, she peeled off her clothes and headed toward the bathroom for a shower. The weather was cold and damp, and the clammy film on her skin was making her uncomfortable.

After showering, she picked up her glass cup and toothbrush and started brushing her teeth. She hadn’t even finished when Lin Wei called.

She had grown up without a father and had lived with her mother in the Mu family home. Later, after her mother passed away, Mu Wan moved out as soon as she graduated from high school. Now she was truly on her own. She had signed with a small agency and played tiny, forgettable roles. But she fed herself, supported herself, and answered to no one.

When Mu Wan lowered the window, his expression remained calm. He pointed beneath her car.

His voice was low and cool, like spring water.

As Liu Qianxiu spoke, he had already moved to the back of the car. Mu Wan rested her wrist on the window frame and glanced toward the rearview mirror.

In the small mirror, she saw him crouch down, one long leg folding smoothly as he lowered himself. In his hand was what looked like a small biscuit or cat treat. Under the dim wash of evening, the line of his profile looked soft and clear all at once, like a watercolor painting waiting for its final touch.

Looking toward the space beneath the rear wheel, Liu Qianxiu called gently, “Come here.”

A moment later, a cat emerged from under the car.

Mu Wan’s gaze shifted.

It was a calico cat, round-bellied and a little plump, its fur dulled with grime. The moment it came out, it tilted its head up and let out a soft, sweet meow at Liu Qianxiu, as if it already knew him.

As soon as it came close enough, Liu Qianxiu bent down and lifted it into his arms without hesitation.

The ground was covered in puddles, and the cat’s paws were muddy. As soon as it settled against Liu Qianxiu, it left little plum-blossom-shaped paw prints on his linen shirt. He didn’t seem to mind at all.

“No,” he said. “It’s a stray.”

“It seems close to you.”

Mu Wan glanced at the cat. Its pupils had widened into dark, round circles.

“I feed it sometimes,” Liu Qianxiu replied.

Their conversation was simple.

She asked one question; he answered one.

Never more than that.

He really was exactly the kind of man people described as distant and unruffled.

“You like cats?” Mu Wan asked with a small smile.

“Mm.”

Again, just one short answer.

After hearing it, Mu Wan gave a tiny shrug, and her pretty face crinkled into a playful smile.

“Meow~”

It was a soft little sound, neither too loud nor too quiet. The sweetness in her voice mixed with her smile, light and soft and unexpectedly charming.

The calico twitched its ears, distracted by her imitation, and looked over at her.

Behind the cat, Liu Qianxiu lifted his gaze as well.

His eyes rested on her quietly, still as ever, vast and unreadable.
