Chapter 101: Su Qing Is Injured
When Mu Yunyao
returned to Niyun Workshop, she saw Su Qing sitting restlessly.
“Mother, what’s
wrong?”
“Yao’er, you’re
finally back. There’s something I want to discuss with you. Come—we’ll talk
upstairs.”
Mu Yunyao
signaled for Jin Lan and Jin Qiao to remain behind, then followed Su Qing
upstairs.
“Mother, what do
you think of Siqin and the others?”
Su Qing frowned
slightly. “That’s precisely what I wanted to talk about. I’m only one person—why
would I need so many attendants? Besides… I feel they’re not like ordinary
maids. I don’t know where Liu Liang found them…”
“Mother, the four
of them have all signed death contracts. With their indentures in hand, there’s
no need to worry about their loyalty. Why concern yourself with where they came
from?”
“That’s not what
I mean…” Su Qing hesitated. “They carry themselves with such presence—it makes
me uneasy.”
Mu Yunyao guided
her to sit and gently massaged her shoulders.
“Mother, I can now let you live well. Naturally, I want more people to serve
you so you can enjoy peace and comfort. This is your daughter’s filial
heart—you mustn’t refuse.”
“Yao’er…”
“And besides,
they’re not just maids. I told you before—I’m worried the Xuanfu Commissioner
and others may cause trouble in secret. These four know some martial arts. They
can protect you.”
Su Qing
hesitated, then slowly nodded. “Alright…”
Mu Yunyao fell
into thought. She would have to train Su Qing more in the future. Otherwise,
when they reached the Su family, even mere verbal barbs would be enough to
reduce her to tears day after day.
Over the next few
days, Niyun Workshop remained quiet—but the entire city of Jingling grew
strangely lively.
A sudden surge of
embroidered goods appeared across the market. Though their quality varied, the
stitching techniques and designs were novel and refined, astonishing many
merchants who had come to Jingling.
Sensing
opportunity, some merchants began openly purchasing embroidery—whether
handkerchiefs, garments, or decorative pieces. As long as the quality was
decent, they offered fair prices.
In an instant,
countless people were overjoyed, and gratitude toward Niyun Workshop spread
everywhere.
Meanwhile, Mu
Yunyao grew increasingly low-key, rarely leaving the workshop unless
absolutely necessary.
After eight or
nine days, Madam Jin sent Yin Hong to invite her to the Cao residence.
“I heard you
haven’t stepped outside for quite some time. Are you preparing the Niyun
Beauty Register?” Madam Jin asked with a smile.
“You’ve guessed
correctly, Madam. This register is difficult to prepare. Many ladies have
secretly sent word to me—I’m worried I might offend someone, no matter whom I
choose or leave out.”
Mu Yunyao spoke
candidly, as she always did before Madam Jin.
“I don’t care
about others—but I must have a page in that register,” Madam Jin said, gently
stroking her belly.
After years of
longing, her wish had finally come true. Even in her dreams, she feared it
might vanish like an illusion.
“In that case,
I’d better release the register soon,” Mu Yunyao teased with a smile.
“Otherwise, in two months, when the clothes are ready, Madam may not be able to
wear them.”
Madam Jin laughed
happily. These days, her greatest concern was the child in her womb. She had
even stepped back from teaching embroidery techniques, which led many to praise
her for her modesty and lack of ambition—an unintended but welcome effect.
“Don’t tease me.
I invited you today to share some excellent news.”
Mu Yunyao showed
just the right hint of curiosity. “What news might that be?”
“You’ve always
been clever—guess. If you’re right, I’ll give you two plates of the kitchen’s
newest pastries.”
“Madam grows more
stingy by the day—only two plates?” Mu Yunyao said with playful reproach, her
smile bright and genuine. “Could it be that some reward has fallen from the
heavens?”
Madam Jin covered
her mouth as she laughed. “Indeed—it has fallen from the heavens.”
She pointed
upward, deliberately emphasizing the word heavens.
Mu Yunyao froze,
then abruptly stood, nearly knocking over her teacup.
“Madam… could it
be a reward from the Emperor?”
“I thought you
were steady—but even you get this excited,” Madam Jin teased. “The reward
should arrive within the next few days.”
Joy lit up Mu
Yunyao’s face, almost childlike in its delight.
“Do I need to
prepare anything? Imperial rewards must be enshrined, don’t they?” she asked—and then suddenly looked troubled.
Madam Jin grew
curious. “What is it?”
Mu Yunyao lowered
her voice slightly.
“There’s
something I don’t understand… If the Emperor rewards me with silver, should I
spend it—or enshrine it?”
Seeing her
reluctance to spend perfectly good silver, Madam Jin laughed even harder.
“You clever
girl—yet sometimes so naΓ―ve. Silver, of course, can be used. Even for other
rewards, you don’t need to enshrine everything. Just display one or two items
to show respect—that’s enough.”
Mu Yunyao blushed
faintly. She truly wasn’t familiar with such matters—she only knew that
whenever the Su family received imperial rewards, they would make a grand
display of enshrining them in the ancestral hall.
Madam Jin was in
high spirits and insisted Mu Yunyao stay for a meal. They chatted for nearly
another hour before Yin Hong escorted her back to Niyun Workshop.
The moment Mu
Yunyao stepped down from the carriage, Siqin hurried over.
“Miss, Madam is
unwell. Please come upstairs at once.”
Mu Yunyao’s face
turned pale instantly. Without asking further, she lifted her skirt and ran
upstairs.
Siqin was
startled by her reaction and quickly followed.
Mu Yunyao’s heart
pounded like a drum. By the time she reached the third floor, cold sweat had
already formed on her back.
She pushed the
door open abruptly.
“Mother, what
happened—?”
Su Qing was
sitting by the bed, frowning slightly. Seeing Mu Yunyao’s expression, she was
startled.
“What’s wrong?
Why is your face so pale?”
She tried to
stand, but Siqi quickly supported her.
“Madam sprained
her ankle—please be careful.”
Seeing that Su
Qing was only slightly pale, Mu Yunyao let out a long breath of relief. Her
racing heart slowly settled.
She stepped
forward and helped her sit properly.
“Mother, I heard
you were unwell—I was so frightened.”
Su Qing wiped the
sweat from her face with a handkerchief, her expression full of concern.
“On the way back,
the carriage horse was startled. I was bumped a little—nothing serious. You, on
the other hand, rushed up here in such a state.”
Siqin hurried in
to apologize.
“It was my fault
for not explaining clearly and causing Miss to worry. Please punish me.”
Mu Yunyao shook
her head.
“It’s not your
fault. I didn’t ask properly. But… how did the horse suddenly get startled for
no reason?”
