My Legal Wife
The air-conditioning in the hall chased away some of the morning heat.
Mu Wan held a pen in her hand and watched Liu Qianxiu sign the documents beside her.
Sensing her gaze, Liu Qianxiu turned his head.
“What is it?”
“Nothing.”
Mu Wan smiled. Coming back to herself, she lowered her head and signed her own name.
Liu Qianxiu had brought her here to register their marriage.
Mu Wan had not prepared for it at all. Even after receiving their marriage certificates, she still felt as though she were floating in the clouds.
There was a photograph printed inside.
She looked at it.
Then she looked at Liu Qianxiu again.
He was driving now.
Two buttons of his white shirt were undone, and his dark eyes remained fixed on the road ahead.
The slanting morning sunlight streamed through the windshield, falling across the steering wheel and illuminating his long, well-defined fingers.
A red light appeared ahead.
Liu Qianxiu stopped the car and turned toward her.
Mu Wan was still staring at him, her bright eyes almost puppy-like.
His lips pressed together slightly.
Then he raised a hand and stroked her fluffy curls.
The instant he touched her hair, Mu Wan smiled.
She finally returned to herself.
Looking down at the marriage certificate, she said, “I always thought you were a foreign citizen.”
Liu Qianxiu had grown up in Austria with his grandfather and had only returned to China in recent years.
Mu Wan had always assumed he held foreign citizenship.
That was why, even now, with the marriage certificate in her hands, everything still felt slightly unreal.
They had not held an engagement banquet.
They had not held a wedding.
Yet legally, they were already joined together.
Mu Wan liked the feeling of the two of them becoming one.
She was extremely happy, her eyes sparkling with the kind of delight someone might have just after waking from a beautiful dream.
The light turned green.
Liu Qianxiu’s fingers lingered briefly against her earlobe.
He gave it a small pinch, then drove forward.
“No. The heads of the Liu family have never taken foreign citizenship.”
Old families like the Liu family cared deeply about returning to their roots.
Even though they had many choices when it came to nationality, they did not choose to emigrate.
Besides, Xia City’s Four Great Families were ancient aristocratic clans whose histories stretched back through generations, some even tracing their lineage to distant dynasties.
They placed even greater importance on such matters.
Perhaps it was because of his explanation.
Perhaps it was simply because more time had passed.
Either way, the fact that she and Liu Qianxiu were now married began to feel increasingly real to Mu Wan.
Mu Wan had no filming that afternoon.
She took an unhurried nap and did not wake until three.
Liu Qianxiu had already gone to work.
She planned to go to the hospital for her prenatal examination. Once she finished, she could leave with Liu Qianxiu and go to the Mei residence.
Mu Wan got up, washed her face, and tidied herself.
Then she called Uncle Li, who drove her to the hospital.
She did not call Liu Qianxiu in advance.
Instead, she went straight to his office.
Liu Qianxiu was not alone.
There were two other doctors with him.
Mu Wan did not recognize the man.
But she knew the woman.
It was Xiao Yun.
Mu Wan stood outside the office and looked through the glass.
She knocked.
Everyone inside raised their heads.
Liu Qianxiu saw her first.
After apologizing to the others, he walked over and opened the door.
“Awake?”
“Mm.”
Mu Wan nodded and glanced into the office.
“Are you busy?”
“Almost finished.”
Liu Qianxiu took her hand.
“Come in and wait for a while.”
Mu Wan did not act awkward or shy.
She followed him inside.
After nodding politely in greeting to the two doctors, Liu Qianxiu led her toward the hospital bed and had her sit down.
Just before drawing the curtain, he seemed to remember something.
He picked up a carton of strawberry milk, inserted the straw, and handed it to her.
The male doctor looked visibly surprised.
Xiao Yun frowned slightly.
Mu Wan accepted the milk with a smile, put the straw between her lips, and began drinking.
She sat quietly while they discussed surgical cases.
As usual, she could not understand a single thing.
But she simply sat there sipping her strawberry milk.
The sweetness of the milk mixed with the fruity fragrance on her tongue.
She was not bored in the slightest.
Every so often, while discussing the case, Liu Qianxiu would glance toward her.
Mu Wan would smile back.
By the time the discussion ended, half an hour had passed.
The male doctor was perceptive enough to excuse himself immediately.
Xiao Yun remained, slowly organizing her documents.
“Are we going to obstetrics now?”
Mu Wan walked toward Liu Qianxiu and asked.
The moment she spoke, Xiao Yun’s hands paused.
She looked up.
“Mm.”
Liu Qianxiu took Mu Wan’s hand.
“Have you already contacted a doctor?”
Xiao Yun asked while holding her files.
The couple looked toward her.
Xiao Yun smiled.
“I have a mentor in obstetrics.”
“Dr. Chen?” Liu Qianxiu asked.
Dr. Chen was the most experienced obstetrician in the department.
Xiao Yun paused, then nodded.
“Yes.”
“I already contacted her,” Liu Qianxiu said.
“Oh.”
Xiao Yun nodded.
She smiled faintly but said nothing more.
Then she turned and left.
“She works in surgery,” Mu Wan said as she followed Liu Qianxiu out of the office. “Why does she have a mentor in obstetrics?”
Liu Qianxiu looked at her.
“I don’t know.”
He did not know many doctors in the hospital.
Even fewer were people he interacted with regularly.
The only reason he knew Dr. Chen was because of Xu Xingkong’s pregnancy.
Liu Qianxiu was one of the hospital’s most talked-about figures.
Yet he himself neither knew nor cared.
Mu Wan had almost forgotten what his personality was like.
Thinking of it, she laughed.
She linked her arm through his and happily followed him.
When they reached Dr. Chen’s office, Mu Wan went in for her examination.
Afterward, Dr. Chen began entering her information.
Dr. Chen was a kind elderly woman.
She knew Liu Qianxiu, of course.
Among the hospital’s unmarried young doctors and nurses, and even some of the patients, there had been no shortage of discussion about him.
Even after he got a girlfriend, some people still waited hopefully for them to break up.
But not only had they failed to break up, Liu Qianxiu had now brought his girlfriend in for a prenatal examination.
Dr. Chen did not ask unnecessary questions.
She simply conducted Mu Wan’s examination.
The young nurses standing nearby, however, began whispering outside.
“How is she pregnant already? Dr. Liu isn’t married yet, is he?”
“Definitely not. Otherwise, the surgery department would’ve heard something.”
“So she’s pregnant before marriage?”
One of the nurses clicked her tongue, her tone difficult to interpret.
Mu Wan listened quietly.
When the examination was finished, she went to the nurses’ station to complete her records.
The same young nurses came over to enter her information.
When one of them asked about her marital status, Mu Wan called,
“Liu Qianxiu.”
He had just returned carrying her examination report.
He walked toward the nurses’ station.
Several nurses immediately looked at him.
“What is it?” he asked Mu Wan.
“They’re asking about my marital status.”
Mu Wan smiled.
Liu Qianxiu looked at her.
He raised a hand and gently stroked her hair.
The tenderness in his expression appeared only for an instant.
Then he turned toward the nurses.
“Married.”
“She is my legal wife.”
