Incurable Chapter 55 Part 1

The lobby’s air conditioning helped blow away some of the morning’s heat. Holding a pen, Mu Wan watched Liu Qianxiu sign the documents beside her. Noticing her gaze, Liu Qianxiu glanced over and asked, “What is it?”

“Nothing,” Mu Wan replied with a smile. Snapping back to reality, she signed her name as well.

Liu Qianxiu led Mu Wan to collect their marriage certificate. Mu Wan, utterly unprepared for this moment, still felt a bit dazed even after the official handed it over. She turned the certificate over in her hands and glanced at the photo of the two of them, then looked up at Liu Qianxiu for reassurance.

He was driving, the top two buttons of his white shirt undone, his dark eyes fixed on the road ahead. Morning sunlight streamed through the windshield, illuminating the steering wheel and the long, slender fingers gripping it.

At a red light, Liu Qianxiu stopped the car and turned to look at her. Mu Wan was still watching him, her puppy-like eyes unusually bright. He pursed his lips slightly and reached out to ruffle her fluffy curls. The moment his fingers touched her hair, Mu Wan laughed.

Snapping to awareness, Mu Wan glanced down at the marriage certificate in her hands and murmured to Liu Qianxiu, “I thought you were a foreign national.”

Liu Qianxiu had grown up in Austria with his grandfather, returning to China only recently. Mu Wan had always assumed he held foreign citizenship, so now, with the marriage certificate in hand, it all felt strangely unreal.

Neither an engagement banquet nor a wedding ceremony had taken place. Legally, though, they were now one. Mu Wan cherished this feeling. She was overjoyed, her eyes sparkling with excitement, as if she had just been awakened.

The traffic light turned green. Liu Qianxiu paused briefly by her earlobe, giving it a gentle pinch before driving forward.

“No, none of the heads of the Liu family holds foreign citizenship.”

Such prominent families placed great emphasis on returning to their roots. Even with numerous nationality options available, they would never choose to emigrate. Moreover, the four major families of Xiacheng were all ancient lineages stretching back generations, their histories traceable to distant dynasties, making this principle even more deeply ingrained.

Perhaps because of this explanation, probably because time had passed, Mu Wan’s sense of their marriage grew increasingly real.

That afternoon, with no filming schedule, Mu Wan rested until three, then headed to the hospital for her prenatal checkup. She planned to meet Liu Qianxiu there before visiting the Mei family.

After freshening up, Mu Wan called Uncle Li for a ride to the hospital. Instead of calling Liu Qianxiu, she went straight to his office.

Liu Qianxiu wasn’t alone in the office. Besides him, there were two doctors—a man she didn’t recognize and a woman she knew, Xiao Yun.

Mu Wan stood outside the door, peering through the glass. She knocked, and the people inside looked up. Liu Qianxiu spotted her first. After muttering an apology, he walked over and opened the door for her.

“Wake up?” Liu Qianxiu asked, looking at her.

“Mhm.” Mu Wan responded, glancing around the office and asking, “Are you busy?”

“Almost done.” Liu Qianxiu said, then pulled Mu Wan in. “Come in and wait a moment.”

Mu Wan didn’t hesitate, following Liu Qianxiu inside. She nodded greetings to the two doctors before Liu Qianxiu guided her to sit on the hospital bed.

Just before drawing the curtain around the hospital bed, Liu Qianxiu remembered something. He picked up a box of strawberry milk, inserted the straw, and handed it to Mu Wan.

The male doctor’s eyes held a hint of surprise, and Xiao Yun’s brows furrowed slightly as they observed the couple. Mu Wan accepted the milk, smiled, placed the straw in her mouth, and began to drink.

She sat there, listening to their discussion of surgical cases, still unable to understand a word. She sat there sipping her strawberry milk. The fruity aroma danced on her tongue, and she felt no boredom. After Liu Qianxiu discussed matters with them for a while, he would glance at her, and Mu Wan would return his gaze with a smile.

By the time the case discussion concluded, half an hour had passed. The male doctor, sensing the moment, excused himself early. Xiao Yun remained standing, organizing the files.

“Shall we head to the OB-GYN department now?” Mu Wan watched her methodically tidy up, then approached Liu Qianxiu to ask.

The moment she spoke, Xiao Yun paused her movements and lifted her gaze.

“Yes,” Liu Qianxiu said, taking her hand.

“Did you contact the doctor?” Xiao Yun asked, cradling the files. The couple looked at her. Xiao Yun smiled and said, “I have a mentor in the OB/GYN department.”

“Dr. Chen?” Liu Qianxiu asked.

Dr. Chen was the most senior obstetrician-gynecologist in the department.

Xiao Yun paused, then nodded. “Yes.”

“I’ve already contacted him,” Liu Qianxiu stated.

“Oh.” Xiao Yun nodded, smiled briefly, then said nothing more as she turned and walked out the door.

“She’s a surgeon—why does she have an OB/GYN mentor?” Mu Wan followed Liu Qianxiu out, asking as they walked.

Liu Qianxiu glanced up at Mu Wan and replied, “I don’t know.”

He didn’t know many doctors at the hospital, and even fewer with whom he had interactions. His connection to Dr. Chen stemmed from Xu Xingkong’s pregnancy last time.

At the hospital, Liu Qianxiu was a focal point. Unaware and indifferent, he drew attention nonetheless. Mu Wan almost forgot his personality. Remembering, she smiled, hooked her arm through his, and, cheerful, followed him along.

At Dr. Chen’s office, Mu Wan underwent her examination. Afterward, Dr. Chen entered her information into the system.

Dr. Chen was a kind-hearted older man who recognized Liu Qianxiu. After all, young doctors, nurses, and even patients of childbearing age in the hospital frequently discussed him. Even though he already had a girlfriend, some still secretly hoped they would break up.

Not only had they not broken up, but he was now bringing his girlfriend to prenatal checkups.

Dr. Chen asked a few questions and assisted Mu Wan with the examination. Instead, the young nurses following behind began gossiping outside, chattering away.

“How did she get pregnant? Dr. Liu isn’t married yet, is he?”

“Of course not. Otherwise, there would be some buzz about it in the surgery department.”

“So it’s an unplanned pregnancy.” The young nurse clicked her tongue twice, her tone carrying an unspoken implication.

Mu Wan listened quietly. After her appointment, she went to the nurses’ station to complete her records. The same young nurses approached her then to input her information.

When the nurse inquired about marital status, Mu Wan called out Liu Qianxiu’s name. Liu Qianxiu had just brought her report over and approached the nursing station, where several nurses were watching him.

“What is it?” he asked.

“They’re asking about my marital status,” Mu Wan replied with a smile.

Liu Qianxiu gazed at her, reaching up to brush her hair. The tenderness in his expression vanished in an instant as he turned back to the nurses at the station.

“Married. She is my lawful wife.”

By the time Liu Qianxiu finished his shift, news of his marriage had spread throughout the hospital, sending the entire place into an uproar. First, everyone marveled that Master Liu, known for his long-standing celibacy, had moved so swiftly, falling in love and marrying almost immediately. Second, his admirers completely abandoned any hope that he would break up with her. After all, he was married, and his wife was pregnant. This wasn’t just a simple breakup between young lovers.

The hospital buzzed with gossip, though the couple themselves remained largely unaffected.
